Gene Simmons of Kiss to wed longtime girlfriend

LOS ANGELES | Thu Sep 1, 2011 8:49pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Kiss frontman Gene Simmons will marry his girlfriend of 28 years, the actress and former Playmate Shannon Tweed, in an October ceremony, his representative said on Thursday.

The wedding will put a traditional twist on a decidedly untraditional relationship between the hard rock icon and the model that, since 2006, has been chronicled in the reality TV show "Gene Simmons: Family Jewels" on cable network A&E.

The Israeli-born Simmons and the Canadian-born Tweed have two adult children together, Nick and Sophie.

An invitation for the wedding, which will be held on October 1 in Los Angeles, was created that contains drawings of the family done by Nick Simmons and a message by Sophie Simmons.

"There will no longer be a Team Tweed or a Team Simmons but instead a Team Tweed-Simmons," the message read.

Gene Simmons, 62, plays bass guitar and sings in the band Kiss, which had hits with the songs "Detroit Rock City" and "Rock and Roll All Night."

Shannon Tweed appeared in the pages of Playboy magazine in the 1980s and had a number of starring roles in low-budget thrillers and adventure movies such as "Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death" and "Scorned."

Simmons proposed to Tweed in Belize, in a moment that was captured by cameras for their A&E reality show.

Cher slams "stupid bigots" over son Chaz Bono

Thu Sep 1, 2011 2:23pm EDT

(Note: strong language in tweet, paragraph 4)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Cher has slammed the "stupid bigots" who have attacked the casting of her transgender son Chaz on TV show "Dancing with the Stars", and called on her fans to flood social media websites with messages of support.

The singer and actress took to her Twitter account to defend Chaz Bono, who underwent a female-to-male sex change last year, saying it took courage for him to agree to be one of the celebrity contestants on the ballroom dancing show.

"lovelies! Chaz is Being Viciously Attacked on Blogs & Message boards about being on DWTS!This is Still America right ? It took guts 2 do it," Cher tweeted on Wednesday.

"Can u guys check out sites & give him your support ? BTW ...Mothers don't stop Getting angry with stupid bigots who fk with their children !", she added.

Chaz Bono, 42, has been the target of jokes and hate messages on social media since the ABC network announced on Monday that he would be taking part in the new season of "Dancing with the Stars", starting on September 19.

Some fans have said they will no longer watch the show -- one of the most popular series in the United States -- while he is a contestant.

Bono, the only child of entertainers Cher and Sonny Bono, was born Chastity Bono and is still remembered in the United States as the cute little blonde girl who appeared on "The Sonny and Cher Show" in the 1970s.

He will be partnered on "Dancing with the Stars" with professional dancer Lacey Schwimmer, who said the negative reaction is "not cool."

"It's disappointing," Schwimmer told celebrity news website TheInsider.com. "We're all taught not to bully or harass and treat everyone as equals yet all these people are doing exactly the opposite."

Schwimmer said she was "absolutely thrilled" to be paired with Bono. "Not only is he Sonny and Cher's child but he's also generally a cool person."

Bono chronicled his journey from Chastity to Chaz in the TV documentary "Becoming Chaz" earlier this year.

The gay and lesbian campaign group GLAAD said that the new season casting of both Chaz Bono and gay TV stylist Carson Kressley has given ABC "a primetime first."

"At a time when transgender representation in the media is sorely lacking, Chaz Bono joining the cast of a series like 'Dancing with the Stars' is a tremendous step forward for the public to recognize that transgender people are another wonderful part of the fabric of American culture," said Herndon Graddick, Senior Director of Programs at the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

Marc Anthony denies affair rumors over J.Lo split

NEW YORK | Thu Sep 1, 2011 12:27pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Singer Marc Anthony on Thursday denied rumors that secret affairs with other women broke apart his marriage to "American Idol" superstar Jennifer Lopez earlier this year.

In his first interview since the July announcement of the demise of their seven-year marriage that brought them twins, Anthony, the top-selling salsa artist of all time, told ABC's "Nightline" news program that their split was amicable.

"It wasn't some sensationalistic happening," he said, denying infidelity played any part. "It was a realization on both our parts, you know, It wasn't shocking...These things happen."

On whether he wanted the divorce, he said: "It was a decision that we made jointly."

Last week, speculation sparked in the media of a love affair between him and actress Jada Pinkett Smith, the wife of A-list movie star Will Smith. Anthony co-stars on Pinkett Smith's TV show, "Hawthorne."

But Anthony, 42, called such speculation on celebrities "almost like a sport."

"I will always love Jennifer, she knows that and my kids know that," he said, calling Lopez a "wonderful" woman, mother and friend.

The marriage was the third for Lopez, 42, and produced twins Emme and Max in 2008. The two were married months after Lopez's engagement to actor Ben Affleck ended, and days after Anthony's divorce from former Miss Puerto Rico Dayanara Torres was finalized.

Lopez' music career has been enhanced by Anthony's popularity within the Latin music market. The couple performed together in a 2007 tour called "Juntos en Concierto." They also worked on each other's albums and starred opposite each other in 2006 film "El Cantante."

This year, she became a judge on No. 1-rated television show "American Idol," and her single "On The Floor" has been a top 10 hit in several countries.

"It is sad, because you think about the impact about all those people that believed in you," Anthony told ABC. "But there is still life to live together through Max and Emme."

Since the split announcement Lopez, 41, has graced magazine covers and been spotted in various media and gossip pages while Anthony has stayed silent.

Madonna thanks exes for encouraging movie career

VENICE, Italy | Thu Sep 1, 2011 10:04am EDT

VENICE, Italy (Reuters) - Pop star Madonna thanked her ex-husbands for encouraging her to take up a career in movies, as she arrived in Venice on Thursday for the world premiere of her lavish royal drama "W.E."

The 53-year-old American has been married to actor and director Sean Penn and British film maker Guy Ritchie -- and has spent much of the last few years behind the camera rather than on the stage.

W.E., her second feature film, appears at the Venice film festival outside the main competition, but the presence of one of the world's biggest celebrities inevitably dominated the attention of the world's press.

The film re-tells the story of American divorcee Wallis Simpson, whose affair with Britain's King Edward VIII led him to abdicate the throne.

It does so through the eyes of another American Wally Winthrop, played by Abbie Cornish, who lives in New York in the 1990s and becomes obsessed with the life of a woman with whom she bears an uncanny resemblance.

"I am and was attracted to very creative people which is why I married Sean Penn and Guy Ritchie, two very talented directors," Madonna told reporters after a press screening of W.E.

"They both encouraged me as a director and as a creative person to do what I did, and they were both very supportive," added the singer, who wore a short-sleeved black dress with white trim.

There was applause for the movie after the first screening and one early review, in the Daily Telegraph, gave W.E. three stars out of five.

"Her version of their (the Windsors') lives is a fantasia that will not trouble historians," wrote David Gritten. "Yet oddly, that's a relief after so many stale, plodding TV documentaries about this unlovely couple."

PARALLELS BETWEEN MADONNA, WALLIS

Madonna said she saw parallels between herself and Simpson, a woman who was vilified by many for her role in a constitutional crisis but who is sympathetically portrayed in W.E. by Andrea Riseborough.

Like Simpson, Madonna is a woman who lives her life in the public glare, and is also an American who moved to England for several years while married to Ritchie.

"I identified with her in that I think it's very common when people become celebrities or public figures or icons that we are often reduced to a soundbite and that you're given a few attributes and then you're not allowed to have anything more than that," she said.

"I did go through periods of feeling like I was an outsider when I first moved to England.

"I certainly didn't feel like that by the time I'd lived there for 10 years. And I feel, since I moved there, that I feel very welcomed by England."

Asked why she chose Simpson as a subject, Madonna replied:

"I was deeply and utterly swept up in trying to understand the reason that this man, King Edward VIII ... would relinquish this great position of power for love."

She added that she hoped the success of "The King's Speech," set at the same time and in a similar world to W.E., would help, not harm her project.

"I was a little bit nervous, because I thought, 'oh dear, if someone else is making a movie about the same time-frame, then who would be interested in my movie?'

"But then I saw the film and I saw that it was from a completely different point of view and I view the success of that film as sort of laying the groundwork for my movie.

"So there is a little bit of history and a little bit of knowledge and we are not starting with a blank slate."

Polanski film cheered for wit, Winslet's vomit

VENICE, Italy | Thu Sep 1, 2011 9:02am EDT

VENICE, Italy (Reuters) - He may have been absent, but Roman Polanski made his presence felt at the Venice film festival on Thursday with his comedy "Carnage," in which Oscar-winner Kate Winslet's projectile vomit prompted the biggest laugh.

Some of the adaptation of Yasmina Reza's stage comedy "The God of Carnage" was written by the Franco-Polish film maker while he was under house arrest in Switzerland last year.

The 78-year-old behind the classic "Chinatown" was freed after Swiss authorities decided not to extradite him to the United States, where he is wanted for sentencing for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977 in Los Angeles.

Unsurprisingly, Polanski was not on the Lido waterfront to present the world premiere of his latest picture, one of 22 in the main competition lineup in Venice.

But three of the four cast -- Oscar-winners Winslet and Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly were at the annual cinema showcase to promote the movie.

Jodie Foster, a two-time Oscar winner, rounded off the cast, but did not attend the press conference in Venice.

Polanski set the comedy of manners in New York but filmed it in Paris, and would have been warmed by the loud applause after a press screening which elicited plenty of laughs.

Winslet, playing investment broker Nancy Cowan, won the biggest cheer for her on-screen vomit, an experience she later described as "hilarious.

"It was absolutely hilarious shooting the vomit sequence," the actress told reporters.

"We were all completely beside ourselves with laughter. I had to contain a lot of vomit in my mouth which is not possible for a person to do. So without going into too much detail, it was a fairly complex rig and there was some extremely clever CGI involved.

"My kids came to work ... for the vomit day and I'm so thrilled that they were there because they literally haven't stopped talking about it since."

Waltz, who plays her attorney husband Alan, added: "It needs to be said that the vomit was prepared according to Roman's recipe."

Power couple the Cowans visit the home of liberal writer and campaigner Penelope Longstreet (Foster) and her down-to-earth salesman husband Michael (Reilly) after their children are involved in a brawl.

What begins as a civilized exchange about the incident turns into an increasingly passionate sparring match between the two couples and later between the men and women.

Drink, and relationship problems buried deep, mean cruelty rises quickly to the surface, although comedy is never far away.

Alan Cowan's Blackberry, for example, never stops buzzing, and he constantly interrupts conversations in order to deal with a crisis at a drug firm he represents.

"The majority of the time we didn't feel like, 'well that was certainly funny'," Reilly said. "These people are meant to be going through somewhat of a traumatic experience with each other, so the comedy would come later."

Shot in a single apartment in real-time, Carnage feels like watching a play on the big screen, which some critics faulted. But the general reaction at the press screening was positive.

Winslet said her experience as a mother helped her understand the situation of the families.

"Being a parent myself I'm familiar with school playground politics and how complex that can be and sometimes how ridiculous that can be and funny," she said.

On starring in a Polanski movie, she replied: "When Roman Polanski invites you to join him in any project, you really don't say no."

"Harry Potter" picked top summer movie: poll

LOS ANGELES | Thu Sep 1, 2011 6:11am EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The summer blockbuster movie season comes to an end this weekend, and already moviegoers on one website have decided their favorite flick of the period -- "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2."

Voters in a new poll released on Thursday by NextMovie.com had the British boy wizard casting his spell over nearly 60 percent of voters for favorite summer flick, easily surpassing "X-Men: First Class" with only 15 percent of the tally.

"Rise of the Planet of the Apes" was No. 3 in the survey with comedy "Bridesmaids" and thriller "Super-8" rounding out the top five in that order.

Fans voted the kiss between "Potter" characters Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger as their favorite moment of the final "Potter" film in the survey of more than 25,000 votes.

The biggest bomb of the summer was superhero film "The Green Lantern," starring Ryan Reynolds, with 41 percent, while sci-fi ape thriller "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" was picked the summer's biggest surprise hit.

Comedy "The Hangover Part 2," the much-anticipated sequel to 2009's box-office smash "The Hangover," was voted the second most disappointing film of the summer, but in an odd twist, it managed to nab the title of favorite comedy with 35 percent of voters favoring it over No. 2 comedy, "Bridesmaids."

NextMovie also asked its readers who was the "Hottest Babe," and "Friends with Benefits" star Mila Kunis beat out "Cowboys & Aliens" leading lady Olivia Wilde by a 4 percent margin -- 31 percent to 27 percent.

Among men, "Captain America" actor Chris Evans won the "Best Abs" title, fighting off stiff competition from the likes of "Conan the Barbarian" actor Jason Momoa and Chris Hemworth in "Thor."

While boy wizard Harry Potter may have thundered ahead in this year's rankings, fans are already excited for next summer's big releases, with more than 76 percent selecting "Snow White and the Huntsman," starring Hemsworth and "Twilight's" Kristen Stewart, as the film they are most looking forward to seeing.
