Kid Cudi putting his troubles behind

Fri Oct 15, 2010 10:20pm EDT

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Kid Cudi has had an eventful year. Brawls with fans allegedly led to being booted from his opening spot on Lady Gaga's tour, he was busted for possession of cocaine and criminal mischief, he beefed with Wale, and he became a father to a baby girl named Vada.

But oddly, none of those topics is addressed on his upcoming sophomore album, "Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager" (G.O.O.D. Music/Dream On/Universal Motown). "It's not like 'Cudi's problems with fame, chapter two,' " the 26-year-old says of his forthcoming set. In fact, the album, while still "aggressive and dark and energetic," as he describes it, is a reflection of where Cudi, born Scott Mescudi, is in his life right now.

"I'm a lot happier -- things are in better order and there's peace within my crew and within myself," Cudi says. "I feel I had to go through the fire to get here and I wouldn't change my experiences for the world. At this point, I'm locked in. I definitely got my shit together."

Now that his life's in order, Cudi, who says he's been off drugs for a few months now, is ready for the November 9 release of "Man on the Moon II," which features guest spots from Mary J. Blige, Cage, GLC and mentor/G.O.O.D. Music label head Kanye West. To promote the album, Universal Motown partnered with music video site Vevo's "Go Show" viral events to premiere the first single, "Revofev." Cudi also performed at New York's Bape clothing store, where he once worked, with Vevo and YouTube broadcasting the concert. According to Universal Motown senior director of marketing Billy Zarro, the video garnered "over 8.7 million views in 10 days, immediately becoming the most popular Go Show to date."

However, "Revofev" failed to chart. But second single "Erase Me," featuring West, bowed at No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September. Follow-up "Mr. Rager" will be released in a couple of weeks.

According to manager/producer Plain Pat, the new album is a sign of Cudi's growth. "It's more mature on all angles--the production, himself. He really lays it on the line on this album and it's a lot more cohesive," he says.

Cudi is on a college tour and planning a worldwide trek for 2011. He's also designing a collection for Bape, including a "Rager" T-shirt that will be available on the album's release date, and is set to shoot the second season of HBO series "How to Make It in America" early next year. Additionally, he has struck branding partnerships with Converse, Vitaminwater and Heineken, while "Erase Me" appeared in the season premiere of CW's "90210," according to Zarro.

Now that he's found peace, Cudi hopes to remain grounded -- in his own newfound, overconfident way. "I really just find that life is fucking funny," he says. "You have to take shit as it comes and man up. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger -- that's a fact. Even in death no one will stop me from being great. That's all I know."

Warner Bros. gives go-ahead to two "Hobbit" films

LOS ANGELES | Fri Oct 15, 2010 9:54pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Warner Bros. on Friday said it has given the green light to start filming two movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy novel "The Hobbit," ending months of speculation over whether it would finally be made into a Hollywood movie.

Peter Jackson, who directed the smash hit "Lord of the Rings" film trilogy that features some of the same characters as "The Hobbit," will be at the helm of the new movie, which begins production in February, Warner Bros. said.

Jackson co-wrote the screenplays with Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and director Guillermo del Toro.

"Exploring Tolkien's Middle-earth goes way beyond a normal filmmaking experience," Jackson said in a statement. "It's an all-immersive journey into a very special place of imagination, beauty and drama. We're looking forward to re-entering this wondrous world with Gandalf and Bilbo."

The movie, a co-production of Warner Bros., its New Line Cinema division and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, had been stalled in pre-production for months as MGM fell on hard financial times.

Originally del Toro had been picked to direct and Jackson to produce, but the delays caused del Toro to drop out in May and move on to other projects.

Warner Bros. and MGM have reached a deal allowing MGM to cover its half of the production, estimated to cost a total $500 million, which includes the costs of shooting in 3D, sources told show-business newspaper The Hollywood Reporter.

"The Hobbit" is based on the adventures of one Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit who lives in the land of Middle-earth that is filled with wizards, elves and other fantasy characters. Bilbo goes on a quest to find treasure guarded by a dragon.

The book, which was first published in 1937, is the precursor to the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, which also takes place in Middle-earth.

The "Rings" trilogy grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide at box offices, and in 2003 the final chapter, "Return of the King," swept the Academy Awards, winning in all of the 11 categories in which it was nominated, including best film.

Huey Lewis explores "Soulsville" on new album

Fri Oct 15, 2010 7:04pm EDT

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Huey Lewis & the News recorded some of the most iconic pop-rock of the '80s, and notched two No. 1 albums, including 1983's seven-times platinum-certified "Sports."

Although the band has toured constantly, it hasn't released an album of original material since 2001's "Plan B."

Now the group is back with "Soulsville," an album of soul covers from the Stax Records catalog, due November 2 on WOW Records. The set includes the Staple Singers' "Respect Yourself," Johnnie Taylor's "Just the One (I've Been Looking For)" and the title track by Isaac Hayes.

Billboard talked to Lewis about his classic soul influences, his business and his sideline as a film and Broadway actor.

Billboard: Why did you record an album of Stax soul?

Huey Lewis: It was actually my manager Bob Brown's idea. I was a little wary because I'm a big fan of this stuff. But I figured there's no harm in trying and working the songs up. I was wary because some of these performances are so great they shouldn't be repeated. But I think we've done it justice and we'll turn a lot of people on to this stuff.

Billboard: Among the songs you chose, were there any that were particularly challenging or that you felt were important to get just right?

Lewis: We knew you can't do a Stax record without an Otis Redding song, but some of them are untouchable. "Try a Little Tenderness" is out. "Just One More Day" was proposed, and I was wary in the beginning, because it's tough. I didn't know if I could cut it. But it was one of the last things we cut, and we cut it in one complete take.

Billboard: This is the first News album since 2001. Why did it take so long to get into the studio again, and why did you decide against original material?

Lewis: We're not spring chickens. And the public isn't clamoring for new Huey Lewis & the News material. We have written a few things, but you want it to be meaningful, so it becomes increasingly harder.

It's interesting to contrast the market now to the Stax period when the music was created by black and white people -- integrated musicians -- in a segregated society. Now society is integrated, but music is more segregated than ever. We've always enjoyed the gray areas of music, and unfortunately there's not a big commercial market for it. But I must say, now that we've got this thing out of our system I've actually got some ideas.

Billboard: What will you be doing to promote the record?

Lewis: We're going to tour, and I know we're going on Jimmy Kimmel's show at some point ... Commercially, I don't know. It would be wonderful if people would listen to it. That's all we hope for.

Soul music is a wonderfully short but fertile period in American popular music. This little period is a very important part, and looking back it doesn't sound that dissimilar from Huey Lewis & the News stuff. It's very strange to me, almost a new realization that, "Wow, clearly we were influenced by Johnnie Taylor." I've never heard it in our music before. Now that I hear those Johnnie Taylor tunes, I'm like, "Those tunes could have been our tunes."

Billboard: You've had success as an actor in films and on Broadway. Do you have any plans to continue pursuing roles?

Rapper T.I. sentenced to 11 months in jail

ATLANTA | Fri Oct 15, 2010 6:00pm EDT

ATLANTA (Reuters) - Grammy Award-winning rapper T.I. was sentenced on Friday to serve 11 months in jail for violating the terms of his probation after he was arrested in September on suspicion of possessing ecstasy.

"I screwed up. I screwed up big time and I am sorry," the singer told U.S. District Judge Charles Pannell, who also ordered him to serve a year of supervised release.

T.I., 30, has won three Grammy Awards, most recently in 2008 for "Swagga Like Us" and has been nominated 12 times.

Even by the standards of U.S. hip-hop stars, T.I. has undergone a remarkable few years.

In 2007, he faced a possible 30 years in prison on federal gun charges after he was arrested the same day he was due to have starred at the Black Entertainment Television awards after being nominated for a series of honors.

A judge eventually sentenced him to just one year in jail after he pleaded guilty and agreed to do 1,000 hours of community service, warning young people about the dangers of drugs and gangs -- work for which he was widely praised.

Friday's hearing stemmed from an arrest on September 1 in Hollywood, when police said they found drugs in his vehicle.

On Wednesday of this week, T.I., whose real name is Clifford Harris, helped persuade a man not to jump from a 22-story building in Atlanta's midtown.

Police praised T.I. after an officer at the scene recorded a video message from the rapper, who was passing by, and sent it to a negotiator on the roof, who showed it to the 24-year-old man, according to local media reports.

T.I.'s career began as a rapper in 2001 but he has since branched out into other areas of the music and film industry, finding success both as a producer and actor.

He founded Grand Hustle Records in 2003, which operates as a subsidiary of Warner Music Group.

Fishing, kayaking Sarah Palin debuts TV show trailer

LOS ANGELES | Fri Oct 15, 2010 3:18pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hiking in the Alaskan snow, bear-watching, fishing, kayaking and family -- that apparently is what Sarah Palin loves best, according to a trailer for her new TV reality show released on Friday.

Better known for rallying conservatives and Tea Party followers at political meetings, the former U.S. vice presidential candidate and Alaska governor is the subject of an eight-part TV series making its debut on November 14.

"I'd rather be doing this than in some stuffy, old political office. I'd rather be out here being free," Palin says in the trailer for "Sarah Palin's Alaska."

The brief clip shows Palin having fun in Alaska countryside with her husband Todd and five children, kayaking down rivers, watching wild bears playing, and trekking across snow-filled hills.

The TV show on channel TLC is the latest media venture for Palin, the polarizing Republican who is widely thought to be weighing a run for president in 2012. Her second book "America by Heart" is expected to be published in late November after her 2009 best-seller "Going Rogue".

Palin's eldest daughter Bristol, 19, a single mother and a paid speaker on the topic of abstinence before marriage, is currently a contestant on popular TV show "Dancing with the Stars."

Bristol Palin's former boyfriend Levi Johnston is also working on his own upcoming TV show which chronicles his bid to be elected mayor of Wasilla, Alaska -- a post once held by Sarah Palin.

Fri Oct 15, 2010 10:52am EDT

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Oprah Winfrey had a big surprise for the audience of "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" on Thursday.

The daytime queen appeared via satellite on the Comedy Central show to announce that she was going to fly the audience to Washington, D.C., for Stewart's "Rally to Restore Sanity," taking place October 30.

"We need a bit more sanity in the world," she said. "I wanted to show my support for you, Jon, and your audience, so here's what I did. I had my staff sneak into your studio with a little gift."

She told the audience to look under their seats, where they found red envelopes, which they opened.

"You're going to the rally!" she yelled. "Now get out there and restore some sanity."

Winfrey -- who previously showed her support for the rally via Twitter -- also is planning to pay for the audience members' hotels, according to JustJared.com.

Richards: Mick Jagger was "unbearable"

LONDON | Fri Oct 15, 2010 11:04am EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards says in his new autobiography that Mick Jagger became unbearable over the years and reveals he also calls the imperious lead singer "Your Majesty" and "Brenda."

The memoir is peppered with references to other celebrities -- from Johnny Depp to John Lennon -- but it is the prickly dynamic between Richards and Jagger that dominates the 527-page book, which is to be serialized in The Times newspaper.

Richards, 66, who met Jagger at the age of four, says he has not stepped foot in Jagger's dressing room in 20 years.

"It was the beginning of the Eighties when Mick started to become unbearable," Richards writes in the memoir, "Life," which brought him an advance of 4.8 million pounds ($7.7 million) after a massive bidding war among publishers.

Richards and Jagger were two of the Stones' founding members in 1962 and wrote its hit songs, leading the group to sales of more than 200 million albums worldwide.

"Sometimes I think: 'I miss my friend,'" Richards writes. "I wonder: 'where did he go?'"

But Richards told the Times that his bandmate had read the book and wanted to take out only one thing -- a reference to Jagger using a voice coach.

Richards refused, saying: "I'm trying to say the truth here."

He added about Jagger: "We've had our beefs but, hey, who doesn't? You try and keep something together for 50 years," adding the band was considering going on tour again.

"I think it's going to happen. I've had a chat with ... Her Majesty. Brenda."

The band's last tour ended in August 2007, sparking the customary speculation that there would be no more.

STAR-STUDDED LIFE

Richards is similarly frank about other big names. He said he had long failed to recognize Depp when the Oscar-nominated star had been hanging out with his son for two years.

"Then one day he was at dinner, and I'm like, 'Whoa!' Scissorhands!"

Depp, who played the lead role in the 1990 movie "Edward Scissorhands," credits Richards for inspiring his character Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean films, and the two are currently shooting the series' fourth installment, where Richards reprises his role as Sparrow's father.

Richards also throws in a few choice remarks on the Beatles' Lennon: "Johnny. A silly sod, in many ways," he writes.
