Rodriguezs "Machete" in immigration debate

Fri Aug 27, 2010 2:10am EDT

LOS ANGELES Hollywood Reporter - In Robert Rodriguezs new grindhouse feature "Machete," the vengeful title character uses vicious cutlery to butcher his enemies. Could something similar happen to the movie when its released next week?

"Machetes" convoluted story explicitly takes place amid the current powder keg of an immigration debate and on the heels of Arizonas controversial anti-illegal immigration legislation. Crooked politicians, powerful drug kingpins, malicious border vigilantes, antsy day laborers, conflicted customs agents and angry revolutionaries seethe along the U.S.-Mexico border in Rodriguezs film. In real life, confusion and violence have peppered both sides of the line.

"It feels like this movie couldnt have come at a more perfect time," Rodriguez said, "even though we came up with it a long time ago."

This first stab at Mexploitation, about a former federale who gets mixed up in a messy conspiracy on the U.S. side of the border, could become a political pinata. This could be a good thing or a bad thing for the movie, but the films star, Mexican-American Danny Trejo, thinks people will be surprised.

"I think Arizona is going to like this movie," said the man who is Machete. "It doesnt just deal with the guy who comes over the border to support his family; it deals with the corruption on both sides -- the drug dealers, the guys who are getting paid to bring people here and the politicians who, any time they need a good platform, choose immigration. So the feds may now really do something."

The first thing they might do is complain about the movie, which already has kicked up some dust. After Arizonas SB 1070 was signed into law in April, Rodriguez fired the first salvo when he pushed out a recut trailer on Cinco de Mayo that took aim at the state. A tacked-on introduction showed Trejo in character saying, "This is Machete with a special Cinco de Mayo message ... to Arizona." Mayhem, including shots of angry illegal immigrants rising up in rebellion, followed.

FoxNews.com wasted no time in posting an article, "Violent Movie Declares War on Arizona for Immigration Law," that linked the trailer to an incident the day before in which an unidentified white powder was sent to Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, who had signed SB 1070 into law. The article, which was quickly removed from the FoxNews website, declared the trailer "just the latest development in a debate that is growing more rancorous by the minute."

"When the first trailer came out, there was a stir," said Shannon McGauley, president of the Texas Minutemen, self-appointed immigration-law enforcers. "People were saying, Theyre making fun of us. It had its desired effect -- it had some shock appeal."

Writers on other sites, some of whom had seen the trailer and read the screenplay, took up criticizing the film as "racially inflammatory" and as "glorifying a race war." The seeds of this interpretation are not hard to see.

Among "Machetes" more provocative elements are border vigilantes led by Don Johnson as a kind of avatar for Maricopa Countys Sheriff Joe Arpaio and fake political ads for an incumbent senator whose platform is built on his "hard line against wetbacks" and a description of them as "parasites." That the two characters murder a pregnant Mexican woman to prevent her baby from being born in America and then shoot her distraught husband while uttering the line, "Welcome to America," underlines the point.

As over-the-top as the movie is, Rodriguez and his co-writer cousin, Alvaro Rodriguez, load the script with such call-to-arms lines as "We didnt cross the border -- the border crossed us" and "The system is broken. So we built our own." The senator played by Robert De Niro barks at a campaign stop, "Make no mistake, we are at war."

At the same time, the movie has fun with cultural cliches attached to Chicano culture. Characters make verbal references to pinatas, cucarachas, papers, deportation and burritos. A fight played for laughs includes Machete wielding a weedwhacker, hedge clippers and other gardening tools. An underground network for illegal immigrants is headquartered in a taco truck.

But it also is suffused with Mexican pride. When Machete is offered a cigar with the simple, "Cuban?" he responds: "No. Mexican." Viewers at L.A.s rowdy Orpheum Theater screening Wednesday night roared with approval. And its no coincidence that all of the villains in the film are white.

As a sign of things to come, that downtown Los Angeles premiere was attended by a large quotient of brown-skinned fans, some of whom showed up in low riders and wearing "Legalize Arizona" T-shirts. In addition to Johnson, Latino cast members Jessica Alba half-Mexican, Michelle Rodriguez Dominican/Puerto Rican, Cheech Marin Mexican and the 66-year-old star, Trejo Mexican -- not to mention a five-piece mariachi band -- greeted the audience from the Orpheum stage.

That this same area has been the site of numerous immigration reform-related rallies and skirmishes the past four years was not lost on the filmmakers.

Fox certainly knew what it was taking on and actually bid for the right to distribute the film. Its difficulty in trying to figure out how to market the pic likely has less to do with its immigration content than with the fact that its a low-budget B-movie without superheroes. It also has enough nudity, profanity and gore per minute of screen time to make a primetime TV commercial impossible.

Although this type of controversy might have hurt a movie like "Avatar" -- a movie made for hundreds of millions of dollars that News Corp. properties pointedly refrained from criticizing -- a dust-up could help bring "Machete" to a much wider audience. Referring to the earlier Fox News-related attack, Rodriguez smiled and half-jokingly said: "I think they do that on purpose. When you see the movie, youll see theres a lot of that sort of double dealing going on throughout."

Rodriguez is referring to the duplicitous subtext that "Machete" highlights, that all of the surface conflict is just a cynical smokescreen for a goal both sides of the border can agree on: higher profits from drug imports. But in the movie business, its not too far-fetched to suggest that a company could generate controversy to make money.

One elegantly simple statistic shows the potential here: Nearly 13 million young Latinos ages 12-34 are considered frequent moviegoers. Awareness remains low on "Machete" a week out from release, but thats an enormous pool to draw from if awareness shoots up in the wake of public outcry -- especially if its to defend a movie where Latinos are the heroes.

Whether Fox would fan the flames, Rodriguez noted that the potential political minefield has been a hallmark of the exploitation genre from its inception.

"Thats what they would exist for," he said. "As soon as there was an event or an issue, theyd run and make a movie about it and then say, Ripped from todays headlines"

"Machete" could soon become part of those headlines as dozens of other states consider hard-line measures similar to Arizonas. So the potential for impact on the national stage is not insignificant, even for a jokey, low-budget flick like "Machete." "Syriana," this is not.

Dozens of movies and TV series have been caught up in the madness of the moment -- from "Cruising" and "The Passion of the Christ" to "Dogma," "The Sopranos" and "Thelma & Louise" -- but the controversy did little if anything to boost revenue. "Machete," which Fox releases nationally September 3 after a special screening Wednesday at the Venice Film Festival, is slicing into theaters amid midterm election campaigns and an ever-radicalized national debate.

Whether it irks good ol Merican patriots, Latino-American groups, the right-wing talking-head brigade or just plain everyone, the upshot could support the movie in theaters.

"I think the movie is someones personal agenda," McGauley said. "But it seems interesting. If you dont have a sense of humor, no matter what side youre on, it probably makes you a boring person. I imagine that a lot of people who complained will be the first ones to buy a ticket."

Where in the world is Estelle Gettys Emmy? omg

LOS ANGELES Hollywood Reporter - The statuette the late actress won in 1988 for "The Golden Girls" has vanished, leaving a bigger mess than the inside of Sophia Petrillos handbag.

After Getty died in 2008, sons Carl and Barry Gettleman failed to agree on how to divvy up their moms possessions. So they chose to auction them through Bonhams & Butterfields.

"There was a living trust, but it didnt delineate the division of property," Carl explains, noting the belongings also included Gettys iconic wicker purse from the show, her Golden Globe and her Emmy nomination certificate.

On June 14, 2009, less than a year after the actress death, her Emmy was sold for $7,320 to an unknown buyer.

Then two months later, it suddenly popped up on eBay, with a suggested opening bid of $15,000.

At this point the TV Academy, which had failed to intervene before the auction, tried to encourage the unknown seller to remove it, pointing out a 30-year-old mandate that Emmys belong to the TV Academy.

That mandate was only defined, however, by a sticker under each statuette, saying, "This Emmy is the property of ... the Academy." Since 1995, the TV Academy has made recipients sign a contract agreeing not to sell the bauble. But the actress never signed anything promising her prize would revert to the TV Academy.

"This is not something the academy wants to see happen," the organizations John Leverence said at the time.

What it would like to see is where the Emmy is now. But after it appeared on eBay, it vanished for good. Reps for eBay were even harder to track down than Gettys Emmy and never returned calls.

"Those things are special, not something you throw on eBay," sighs Gettys former co-star Betty White. "She was so excited to win and we were so thrilled."

Today, Carl looks back with regret.

"The Emmy had far more sentimental value than money value for me, but theres no way to split an Emmy between two people," he says. "It should have been made accessible to the public. She was so appreciative of her fans, she would have preferred it somewhere where they could see it."

In her own words: Betty White on first Emmy win

Fri Aug 27, 2010 1:08am EDT

LOS ANGELES Hollywood Reporter - Most of what I can resurrect about that evening in 1952 was the total shock I felt when I won and Zsa Zsa Gabor lost.

I was nominated for lead actress in a comedy for my show "Life With Elizabeth," a 30-minute comedy about a husband and wife. But back then, in all my wisdom, I decided to make each episode a series of three 10-minute ministories because I was certain a solid half-hour comedy show would never work.

On the day of the awards, I spent the morning working on my daytime talk program "The Betty White Show." The Emmys werent a big thing back then -- more like a little local awards show. So I worked in the morning and went home and got dressed as if I were just going to a dinner.

I had recently split from my second husband, Lane Allen, so I went with Al Jarvis, who worked with me on the talk show. The ceremony was at the Cocoanut Grove at the Ambassador Hotel. There were no photographers and no red carpet. You just got out of your car and walked into the dinner. It wasnt even an event where people mingled and partied. You came for the awards and left.

Everyone was so sure that Zsa Zsa was going to win for "Bachelors Haven," I didnt even think twice about winning. I was thrilled beyond words to be nominated and recognized, especially considering Id been working six days a week -- with no script

When it came time to announce our category, Zsa Zsa took out her compact and lipstick to freshen up. Just as the presenter was about to announce the winner, she pushed out her chair to get up. And then the presenter announced my name

Well, I almost fainted right there. And, believe me, Zsa Zsa was just as shocked. Thats how sure everyone was that she would win. It was a bit startling, but Zsa Zsa was wonderful about it and offered me congratulations.

There were no speeches then, so I just accepted my award and left. But I was really thrilled to take home that pretty statue. I have my first "golden girl" sitting on top of my dining room hutch alongside all her sisters. Ive had to repair her a few times. She keeps dropping the globe shes holding, so shes been soldered back together. Shes almost as old as I am.

Ive won six Emmys and you never get used to it. I got nominated again this year for outstanding guest star for "Saturday Night Live" and Im thrilled My friend Tina Fey is nominated in my category too and she sent me this big bouquet of roses and tulips and a card.

"Dear Betty," it said, "Congratulations on your nomination. Please try to mention my name in your acceptance speech."

Betty White won the Emmy for outstanding guest actress in a comedy series on August 21.

Drop Deads Jackson Hurst: Diva Is No Chick Show omg

Sundays two-hour finale of Drop Dead Diva will find Jane and Grayson growing closer over a case that hits close to home although those touching moments will lead to a heart-pounding season-ender that will make you question whether the cast will be left intact.

Who has a near-death experience on Drop Dead Diva?

As we first reported, a near-death experience or possibly "more than that," says executive producer Josh Berman will rock the finale. Grayson appears to be the likely No. 1 candidate to follow the lead of his dead girlfriend Deb, who now resides in Janes body.

While the series tag line a glitzy and ditzy gal dies, hits the return button in heaven and finds herself working alongside her former boyfriend alone sounds like its just another "chick show," leading male Diva Jackson Hurst, who plays Grayson, says its not like that at all.

"I had never watched Lifetime. I kind of thought of it as the chick network," Hurst tells TVGuide.com. "The show is all-encompassing. No matter who you are, you can be entertained by it."

Watch full episodes of Drop Dead Diva

Still, when it comes down to it, Drop Dead Diva is like watching a love story the second time around in which Grayson and Jane Brooke Elliot do the friendship tango until he finally realizes shes actually Deb.

While Hurst would love for that big reveal to happen in the very last episode of the series, he teases that its "definitely in the making. Theyre writing for it to happen soon."

"The romantic side of me says theyre meant to be together," he continues. "Theres this amazing cosmic connection between these two characters that Grayson really cant put his finger on."

Exclusive: Gloria Reuben to guest-star on Drop Dead Diva

The finale will bring law firm colleagues Grayson and Jane together as they take on the case of a professor, played by Gloria Reuben, who wants to be cryogenically frozen before succumbing to an illness.

"Grayson is somebody who, more so than your average person, has come to appreciate life because the love of his life lost hers," says Hurst on Graysons reluctance in the case. "To hear somebody come in with something like this doesnt bode well with him. He and Jane butt heads a few times, but there will be some intimate moments of us getting to know each other more."

Catch up on the second season of Drop Dead Diva with a mini-marathon on Friday at 4/3c before the finale airs Sunday at 9/8c.

Spacey to reunite with Sam Mendes

Kevin Spacey and director Sam Mendes are to reunite more than 10 years after working together on the Oscar-winning movie American Beauty.

Spacey will star in Richard III, which will open in February 2012.

"Sam is one of the finest directors I have had the pleasure to work with and to gain this opportunity is beyond my wildest hopes," the actor said.

The production will open in New York, before touring internationally.

It will show at Londons Old Vic Theatre, where Spacey is artistic director.

"With such a remarkable character before me, I have a feeling this one is going to be a memorable experience," Spacey said.

Richard III, who battled for the throne during Englands 15th century Wars of the Roses, is one of Shakespeares great villains and has been played by both Sir Laurence Olivier and Sir Ian McKellen.

Mendes said it was "a role I think Kevin is born to play".

The 1999 film American Beauty scooped five Academy Awards, including best actor for Spacey and best director for Mendes.

Since then, Mendes - who separated earlier this year from his wife Kate Winslet - has directed plays and movies, including Revolutionary Road and Away We Go.

The production is the third and final season of the Bridge Project, which brings together British and American actors in classic plays.

Woman to stand trial on charge of slicing DiCaprio omg

LOS ANGELES - A judge ordered a woman to stand trial on a charge of slashing Leonardo DiCaprios face with glass during a 2005 party.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Edmund Willcox Clarke ordered Aretha Wilson to face one count of assault with a deadly weapon. The charge includes an allegation that Wilson, 40, caused great bodily injury.

The details and extent of DiCaprios injuries were not made public, although the judge, who has reviewed photos of the injuries to the actors ear and neck, said Thursday that "this would not be an injury that would be called trivial or moderate, in my view."

Those photos also were not made public. DiCaprio did not attend the hearing.

Wilson was returned to Los Angeles in the five-year-old case after waiving extradition from Canada.

She has pleaded not guilty and remains jailed in lieu of $150,000 bail.

Wilsons attorney Freddy Sayegh said the ruling was not unexpected and that Wilson has vehemently professed her innocence. He said he expected to trial to begin within 60 days.

She is due back in court on Sept. 9.

Authorities have said Wilson attacked DiCaprio with a broken beer bottle, but a witness called Thursday said it was a wine glass. The criminal complaint identifies the object only as glass.

If convicted, Wilson faces up to seven years in state prison.

Lindsay Lohan back behind wheel and on Twitter

LOS ANGELES | Thu Aug 26, 2010 9:31pm EDT

LOS ANGELES Reuters - Fresh out of rehab and a 13-day stint in jail, Lindsay Lohan returned to Twitter on Thursday -- and blasted the paparazzi who have been following her every move.

"Clearly.. Paparazzi shouldnt be allowed to take pictures or video while someones driving or at a stop light. 4every1s sake," Lohan said in her first Tweet since the eve of being locked up on July 20.

Lohan, who was released on Tuesday after just 23 days of a court-ordered 90-day rehabilitation program, has also got back behind the wheel, after the suspension of her driving license for a 2007 drunk driving and cocaine possession charge.

The 24-year-old actress got her license back on Wednesday and was soon seen driving a Maserati sports car and picking up friends after midnight in Los Angeles.

Lohan, whose promising acting career in movies like "Freaky Friday" and "Mean Girls" has been eclipsed since 2007 by headlines about hard partying, has been trailed by photographers since her release.

She is also reported to have been inundated with offers, including interviews and celebrity endorsements.

One New York-area radio station has offered Lohan and her mother $1 million to host a morning radio talk show together that would cover fashion tips and entertainment news.

However, Lohan was ordered by a judge on Wednesday to remain in Los Angeles until November 1 to undergo twice weekly drug and alcohol testing, and continue drug and behavioral therapy.

Lohans legal troubles have delayed shooting on her next movie in which she will play 1970s porn star Linda Lovelace. She was last in movie theaters with the 2007 flop "I Know Who Killed Me."

Levi Johnston takes back his apology to Palin AP

ANCHORAGE, Alaska Levi Johnston, the father of Sarah Palins grandson, says he wishes he hadnt apologized for telling lies about the former Alaska governor because hes "never lied about anything."

Johnston said in an interview on CBS "The Early Show" to air Friday that he wishes that he hadnt issued the apology to Palin.

"I dont really regret anything," Johnston said, who has appeared nude on the cover of Playgirl. "But the only thing I wish I wouldnt have done is put out that apology cause it kind of makes me sound like a liar. And Ive never lied about anything. So thats probably the only thing. The rest of the stuff I can live with."

CBS said the interview was taped Thursday in Los Angeles.

Johnston is the two-time fiance of Palins eldest daughter, Bristol, and the father of Bristols son Tripp. Bristol Palins teen pregnancy thrusted the couple into the national spotlight during Sarah Palins run as the GOPs vice presidential candidate in 2008.

Johnston has expressed an interest in politics, filing papers last week to run for office in his hometown of Wasilla, Alaska, next year.

While he has not officially declared which political office he aspires to, his manager, Tank Jones, has said Johnston is interested in a run for mayor or city council. Earlier this month, Jones confirmed the 20-year-old Johnston planned to run for office as part of a reality TV show.

Wasilla is where Palin got her political start, first as a council member and then as mayor.

Johnston said he hopes he could be a better mayor of Wasilla than Palin. "I cant guarantee or promise you anything but Im gonna try... Thats the goal," he said.

On The Download: Robyn, Body Talk, Pt. 2 omg

By Jeremy Blacklow

BURBANK, Calif. -- MTV announced earlier today that Robyn would perform at the 2010 Video Music Awards in a special performance with house DJ, deadmau5 Jason DeRulo & Travie McCoy will also be performing, "never before heard mixes of their current hit singles" with deadmau5. This is an exciting opportunity for Robyn, because if youve seen the Swedish pop star perform live before, youll know what sort of treat awaits the audience.

Robyns performance will come on the heels of the September 7 release of "Body Talk Pt. 2," her second of three eight-song releases this year. Those who read "On The Download" regularly know of my predilection for the Swedish pop star. I even had the opportunity to interview her in LA last month during opening night of her "All Hearts" tour with Kelis. The question at hand - could "Pt. 2" eclipse the anthem-filled summer fun of her magnificent "Body Talk, Pt. 1"? The answer... an unequivocal, "Hell yes."

VIEW THE PHOTOS: Hot Shots Of More On The Download Artists

Sticking to what she does best, Robyn provides another album full of cutting edge electronic pop music with indie-cred feel that fits in perfectly in the zeitgeist of the Lady Gaga era. Opening track "In My Eyes," leads off with a welcome of "Konichiwa Bitches" from Robyn the title of one of her tracks from her 2007 "Robyn" album, and revels in cotton candy lyrics like, "The suns gonna shine on all of us... Were all the same - stardust and stuff." The tracks driving beat and melody are a welcome harbinger to the rest of the albums outstanding tracks.

Stand out first single, "Hang With Me," which is reportedly a remake of a 2003 song by Robyn producer Klas Ahlunds ex-wife, is the most pop-friendly gem of the new album. An acoustic version of the song closed out "Pt. 1" and now this more upbeat fully produced track could be poised to become one of the singers biggest hits to date. The "Hang With Me" video features a homage to Robyn fans everywhere - its an instantly iconic glimpse inside of the singers life on the road, and it shows Robyn at some of her most playful times.

VIEW THE PHOTOS: On The Download: The Gaggle Of Gaga Imitators

Robyn also experiments with rap intermittently on several tracks, including "Include Me Out," "Criminal Intent" and "U Should Know Better"... the latter of which is a collaboration with Snoop Dogg. All of these tracks are examples of Robyns boundary-breaking efforts amongst various genres. She doesnt just play with the rules of pop music... she redefines them.

As with "Body Talk, Pt. 1," Robyn closes "Pt. 2" with an acoustic track, this time its a haunting ballad titled "Indestructible." Could a non-acoustic version of this track show up on "Pt. 3"? Well find out later this year - "Body Talk, Pt. 3" is tentatively-scheduled for release in December 2010.

No autotuning here, say `American Idol producers AP

LOS ANGELES Simon Cowell has gone from "American Idol" judge to a potential headache for the show.

A furor over whether Cowells British talent show "The X Factor" electronically altered contestant voices has prompted "American Idol" to make a pre-emptive strike.

"We have never, nor would we ever, use Auto-Tuning during the `American Idol competition," producers of the Fox show said in a statement Thursday, referring to pitch-correcting technology.

"American Idol" viewers can attest that contestants have been regularly scolded for "pitchiness."

Cowell left the judges panel on the top-rated Fox series at the end of last season and is bringing "The X Factor," which he created in Britain and is hugely popular there, to the Fox network in 2011.

Fans of "The X Factor" have alleged online that pitch-correction software was used to alter some performances. The shows producers responded to the outcry by acknowledging that post-production was used to correct for the interplay of the various microphones used during filming.

The producers vowed to avoid the use of electronic pitch correction.

British media outlets have made hay of the issue, with Cowell a particular target. His photo was featured on the front of Britains Daily Mirror on Monday, under the caption: "X Faker."

Wyclef song accuses Haiti president of blocking him

Thu Aug 26, 2010 5:50pm EDT

PORT-AU-PRINCE Reuters - Haitian hip-hop star and presidential hopeful Wyclef Jean turned to song on Thursday to accuse outgoing President Rene Preval of engineering his rejection as a candidate for Haitis November election.

Local radio stations were broadcasting a song by Jean in Creole in which he called for the jailing of electoral officials who last week disqualified him and for the first time directly blamed Preval for being banned from the November 28 vote.

The 40-year-old Haitian-born, U.S.-based musical celebrity, who has an enthusiastic youth following in his poor homeland, is challenging the rejection of his candidacy and has denounced the electoral authorities as corrupt and politically motivated.

The dispute has raised fears of tensions that could disrupt the Caribbean nations rebuilding after a massive January 12 earthquake that killed up to 300,000 people.

In his Creole composition entitled "Prizon Pou K.E.P.a" Jail for the Provisional Electoral Council, a somber-voiced Jean sings that Preval "expelled me from the race."

"I know all the cards are in your hands ... I voted for you to be president in 2006, why today did you reject my candidacy?" the song says, addressing Preval, who cannot seek re-election after serving two terms as president.

"Its not Wyclef that you have expelled, it is the youth you have denied ... its the population you have denied, its the peasants you have denied," Jean sings. He also posted the song on his Twitter page twitter.com/wyclef.

Preval had been informed about the song but did not immediately react, aides said.

In ruling out Jeans candidacy and that of 14 other contenders on Friday, Haitis provisional electoral council said Jean failed to meet a requirement that presidential candidates maintain five consecutive years of residency in the country before running. Nineteen candidates were approved.

BE A GOOD LOSER

After initially accepting the decision, Jean -- who left his homeland with his family at age 9 to live in the United States -- changed his tune, announcing he would appeal. He insists he meets the residency requirements.

A lawyer for the electoral council has said that under Article 191 of the electoral law, rulings by the bodys disputes tribunal are definitive and cannot be appealed.

Some Haitians backed Jeans challenge. "I think politicians like Preval are the reason why Wyclef is not on the list. They control the electoral council, they know Wyclef would win, so this is unfair," said 30-year-old Jean-Michel Morin.

Others felt it would be better if he accepted the electoral bodys decision. "Throwing out accusations and calling on people to mobilize ends up getting people onto the streets to create trouble. I think he needs to show he can be a good loser," said Genevieve Felix, 25.

U.N. and Haitian police have stepped up joint patrols in the rubble-strewn streets of the capital, where more than 1.5 million people are still living in fragile tent and tarpaulin cities at the peak of the 2010 hurricane season.

The U.N. mission in Haiti has appealed to candidates and parties to respect the electoral laws and promote peaceful campaigning. But it has declined to comment directly on the electoral council decision and Jeans challenge of it.

Despite his popularity among Haitis youth, Jean has faced questions about whether a celebrity with no political experience is the best person to lead a chronically poor and corrupt nation that is coming out of a huge natural disaster.

One of his critics has been Hollywood film star Sean Penn, who has helped run a quake survivors camp.

Responding to Jeans public rebuttal of earlier criticism, Penn wrote in a Huffington Post blog that both Haiti and the world should stay focused on the task of aiding earthquake survivors and helping to reconstruct the shattered country.

"The real and devastating human issues in Haiti must be handled and led by a qualified presidents deft hand. These elections are crucial, and I have no part in them. Neither should Mr. Jean," Penn wrote in the posting on Wednesday.

Bristol Palin eyes "Dancing with the Stars": report

LOS ANGELES | Thu Aug 26, 2010 2:55pm EDT

LOS ANGELES Reuters - Teen mom Bristol Palin, the unwed daughter of conservative powerbroker Sarah Palin, will join the new seasons lineup of "Dancing with the Stars" next month, a news report said on Thursday.

Palin, 19, would follow in the reality TV footsteps of her former fiance, Levi Johnston, whose small-screen adventure involves running for political office in Alaska.

The 11th season of "Dancing with the Stars" is set to premiere on September 20 on ABC. The network declined to comment on E Onlines Palin report, saying the lineup would be officially announced next Monday.

Palin last month made a guest appearance as herself on sibling cable network ABC Familys teen drama, "The Secret Life of the American Teenager."

She and Johnston, now 20, became the parents of a baby boy, Tripp, in December 2008. But their relationship has been rocky, with the couple twice breaking off their engagement plans amid an awkward battle for legal custody of their son.

Johnston has also publicly feuded with his would-be mother-in-law, a former Alaska governor who was U.S. Sen John McCains running mate on the Republican presidential ticket in 2008. He has filed papers for a reality TV show he is filming seeking the mayoralty of Wasilla, a post she once held.

"Dancing with the Stars" was the second-biggest show on TV last season, behind "American Idol," averaging about 20 million viewers. Celebrities pair with professional dancers in the weekly elimination contest, and undergo intense scrutiny in the tabloids. Reigning champ is Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger, who teamed with dancer Derek Hough.

Trump battles slump in new season of "Apprentice"

LOS ANGELES | Thu Aug 26, 2010 3:41pm EDT

LOS ANGELES Reuters - The recession has hit America hard, and Donald Trump plans to do something about it on his reality TV series, "The Apprentice."

The 10th season of the Trump-hosted show, premiering September 16 on NBC, will see 16 "economically challenged candidates" competing for a chance to revive their careers, the network said in a statement on Thursday.

For the last three seasons, the show pitted celebrities against each other with rocker Bret Michaels winning the most recent installment in May. But now it is returning to its civilian roots, with the recession adding some intrigue.

Trump said in the statement that the new edition will "combine the realities of todays economic downturn with the grittiness, drama and excitement of the original series."

The lineup of "adversely affected" contestants includes a former Florida real estate agent billed as the current Miss Cougar California, a former Miss Los Angeles who quit her "miserable" job as a lawyer, a former publicist for the governor of Georgia, and a New York prosecutor "obsessed with beauty, hair and style secrets."

Series creator Mark Burnett said thousands applied for a slot on the show, but the chosen ones "embody the fighting, can-do spirit that remind us what the American Dream is all about.

Underwood, Paisley to host CMA Awards Nov. 10 AP

NASHVILLE, Tenn. Carrie Underwoods wedding was one of the most special days of her life, but it will likely become fodder for jokes when she and Brad Paisley host the Country Music Association Awards for the third year in a row.

The two will anchor the Nov. 10 ceremony in Nashville, and Paisley said of Underwoods July union with NHL player Mike Fisher: "We have to bring it up."

"It was big news in country music, so if it is that, it is fair game, as well as Nashville or current events," he said in an interview with Underwood on Thursday. "Its worth talking about anything like that that people will relate to."

The two joked about Paisleys wedding gift to Underwood, a bowl, which Paisley said his wife picked out.

"Is it something you wanted or its in the pile of re-gift items?" asked Paisley.

"Youre going to get it back three Christmases from now," said Underwood.

"I cant wait to get that back," said Paisley.

They also talked about Underwoods wardrobe. She is known to switch up her outfits multiple times throughout the show, changing more than 10 times last year.

"I cant change anymore than I did last year," said Underwood. "I dont think thats a physical possibility, so Im not going to try to outdo the costumes."

So maybe its Paisleys turn to change his outfits this year?

"I think that would be awesome," said Underwood. "Im going to stay in the same thing all night. Im going to show up in my pajamas, and youre going to do your thing."

As for hosting together, the two have a natural timing and chemistry together that comes across on stage and in-person.

"I do feel like we do have our own roles that we fall into and compliment each other," said Underwood.

"At this point three years later, we have each other pretty well figured out, so I think it will go really smooth," said Paisley.

The CMA Awards air live on ABC from Bridgestone Arena.

War planes to be the star in WWII museum expansion AP

NEW ORLEANS Bombers and torpedo planes will be the stars of the latest expansion of the National World War II Museum, and visitors will be able to get close-up views of the war planes on elevated catwalks.

Construction of the new $35 million exhibit will be formally announced Friday. One of Boeing Co.s most famous World War II aircraft, the B-17G Flying Fortress heavy bomber, will be a centerpiece of the new exhibit.

The B-17G is recognizable by the nose turret designed to defend against oncoming attacks by fighter aircraft.

"When you watch some of the old movies of bombing runs, its the plane you see," said Boeing historian Mike Lombardi said.

The B-17 that has gained enduring fame, in part because it was a primary weapon in U.S. strategic bombing against Germany and because it was featured in the 1949 movie and 1960s television series "12 OClock High."

The new museum wing will be called the U.S. Freedom Pavilion: Land, Sea and Air.

"This will be our largest building and a wonderful new chapter on the story of the war," said Gordon Mueller, the museums president and CEO.

The pavilion will be financed by a $20 million grant through the Department of Defense and $15 million given by the Boeing Co. It will have 30,000 square feet of exhibit space about half of the current space and is scheduled to open early in 2012.

It will have a number of other war planes on display. Among them will be a North American B-25J Mitchell medium bomber, made famous by the 1942 raid on Japan commanded by Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle. The exhibit will also showcase a General Motors TBM Avenger, which was the Navys mainline torpedo plane for much of the war, as well as a Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber. That plane led the U.S. to victory over a Japanese fleet at the Battle of Midway in 1942, considered by many historians as the turning point in the war in the Pacific.

While the aircraft will be the featured attractions, the pavilion also is intended to honor collaborative efforts of the U.S. armed forces.

Included will be an interactive submarine experience based on the last patrol of the USS Tang, which was sunk during an attack against Japanese shipping in 1944. Visitors will re-enact roles of crew members as the sub engages the enemy.

The new pavilion is part of an overall $300 million expansion for the museum, which was founded in 2000 as the National D-Day Museum and later was designated by Congress as Americas National World War II Museum. It is privately operated as a nonprofit museum.

Top Chefs Amanda: "I Was Definitely an Underdog" omg

With six chefs left on this weeks Top Chef, Padma & Co. decided to take a trip to Washington, D.C.s Nationals Park. But instead of enjoying a ball game, the cheftestants were left to man the concession stand for a stadium filled with hungry fans.

Top Chefs Alex: I didnt steal Eds pea puree

While the judges thought Tiffanys and Eds concession creations were home runs, they found some serious flaws in the others dishes especially Amanda Baumgartens oxidized tuna tartare. Find out what the Los Angeles native had to say about choosing a raw fish dish for the ballpark challenge and what was the hardest part of her experience.

TVGuide.com: What did you think of the judges decision?
Amanda: The thing is its a game. Its just a big, drawn-out game show, and someone goes home, and I went home. I tried not to overthink it, and because of that reason, Ive been able to maintain a sense of sanity. I try not to dissect the judging.

TVGuide.com: Do you think you deserved to go?
Amanda: I think that decision isnt up to me, which is really great.

TVGuide.com: What would you have done differently?
Amanda: Nothing. I mean, maybe I would have tartare-d the tuna the day of, but maybe I wouldnt have

TVGuide.com: Well, did you know it would oxidize?
Amanda: I knew there was a possibility of that happening, but I also didnt know if I was going to be able to tartare it there. I didnt know what the set-up was going to be.

TVGuide.com: So why did you opt to make tuna tartare?
Amanda: I honestly dont know. At that point, I was really, really tired, and the thing is, I didnt have a good idea of what I wanted to do. I was just beat.

TVGuide.com: What was the hardest part of the experience?
Amanda: Its just every day, going around, racing, pushing. I think, towards the end, I was running out of gas. I fought really hard to stay there as long as I did. I didnt get lucky; I fought for it. I was definitely an underdog towards the end.

TVGuide.com: And just to put some closure on the pea puree drama, Alex said last week that you can vouch for him. Can you?
Amanda: Yeah, Ive told everyone so far that he made it next to me. He didnt steal it.

Eminem leads singles chart, Lil Wayne top debut

Thu Aug 26, 2010 2:11pm EDT

NEW YORK Billboard - Eminems "Love The Way You Lie" led Billboards Hot 100 singles chart for a sixth week on Thursday, while incarcerated rapper Lil Wayne scored the top debut as "Right Above It" entered at No. 6.

The tune, with Drake as featured artist, is also Lil Waynes highest debuting single as a lead artist. Reportedly part of an EP scheduled for release this fall, it bests the No. 10 arrival of "Got Money," featuring T-Pain, in 2008.

At the other end of the chart, reunited rockers Soundgarden made their Hot 100 debut at No. 96 with "Black Rain." The bands prior radio hits, including "Black Hole Sun," occurred during an era when a physical single was required for entry onto the Hot 100.

Taio Cruz held at No. 2 for a third straight week with "Dynamite." Katy Perry, whose new album "Teenage Dream" is expected to end Eminems reign on the Billboard 200 chart next week, jumped two places to No. 3 with the title track, while former No. 1 "California Gurls" fell five to No. 8 and album cut "E.T." debuted at No. 42.

Enrique Iglesias held at No. 4 with "I Like It," featuring Pitbull. Mike Posners "Cooler Than Me" dipped one to No. 7. After appearing on two top 10s this year as a featured vocalist B.o.Bs "Nothin on You" and Travie McCoys "Billionaire", newcomer Bruno Mars scored his first top 10 as a lead act, as "Just The Way You Are" soared seven to No. 9.

"Magic" by B.o.B featuring Rivers Cuomo rose one to No. 10. It marks Weezer frontman Cuomos second appearance in the top 10; he previously spent a week at No. 10 in October 2005 with his bands "Beverly Hills" in October 2005.

Other debuts included Nellys "Grillz" at No. 12, Rascal Flatts "Why Wait" at a career-best start of No. 48, and Maroon 5s "Give a Little More" at No. 86.

Censored episode of Family Guy for sale on DVD AP

NEW YORK "Family Guy" forbidden fruit will soon be available for plucking at least, for fans prepared to pay $15 for a peek.

"Partial Terms of Endearment," a never-seen episode of the racy animated series, will be available for sale on DVD on Sept. 28 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment more than a year after the Fox network deemed it outrageous even by "Family Guy" standards and pulled it from last seasons slate of episodes.

Since then, the episode, which will not be downloadable, has gained a sort of "banned-in-Boston" notoriety. Further upping the ante is its subject matter. Bumbling, moronic Peter Griffin and his patient but libertine wife, Lois, throw themselves into the abortion debate.

The episodes narrative has never been a secret. In fact, it was performed live last summer by the cast including Seth MacFarlane, the series creator, who serves as executive producer, writer and the voice of numerous characters for members of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences as well as members of the press.

Still, heres a spoiler alert for those who dont want to know what happens.

Most of the episode dwells on Lois voiced by Alex Borstein agreeing to become a surrogate mother for a friend who cant have a child. But after her friend and her husband are killed in a car crash, the Griffins are left with the difficult decision of whether to proceed with the pregnancy or not.

What, in other hands, could have been a serious, even heart-wrenching story is on "Family Guy" a devilish burlesque not to mention a wickedly astute examination of the current abortion clash.

Its not as if the episode trivializes the debate. Oh, its a big decision, Peter readily acknowledges. "But life is FULL of big decisions like deciding whether or not to have Indian food."

To see the episode in all its cartoon glory is to conclude three things:

_Its wickedly funny, no matter how offensive.

_It was never at least, not in this lifetime ever going to make it to the air of any commercial TV broadcaster. Hmmmm. Was shooting it, then "censoring" it always a marketing ploy to super-charge DVD sales?

_And, finally, its recommended only for the "Family Guy" faithful. The uninitiated, the faint-of-heart and, most of all, the anti-abortion crowd should maybe choose to take a pass.

At one point, Peter voiced by MacFarlane watches an anti-abortion video, whose speaker declares, "Science has proven that within hours of conception, a human fetus has started a college fund and has already made your first Mothers Day card out of macaroni and glitter."

That video argues that several key people would be alive if abortion werent legal, including a fourth Stooge, a guy who would have killed Adolf Hitler, and Osama bin Ladens America-loving brother, who could have prevented 9/11.

Presented with this argument, the ever-waffling Peter instantly decides against Lois getting an abortion.

But earlier, he is insistent that her pregnancy be terminated.

In one attempt to induce a miscarriage, Peter pleasantly tells Lois, "Ive hired some 1980s black break-dancers to do their routine on your stomach."

Then, in a homage to "Road Runner" cartoons, Peter buys an Acme Miscarriage Kit, which, of course, malfunctions, resulting in him as the Wile E. Coyote stand-in taking an interminable plunge into a canyon.

Nonetheless, by the end of the episode, Peter and Lois have agreed on what to do.

"I think we made the right decision," she says brightly as they sit at their kitchen table, summing things up in the episodes last moments. "One more person to share the world with, another little voice in the back seat of the car."

Any "Family Guy" fan can see where this is headed.

Arrests made at U2 gig in Russia

Irish band U2s first Russia concert was marred after police arrested activists from rights group Amnesty International before the gig began.

A police spokeswoman said they did not have permission to hand out leaflets outside the Moscow event.

The head of the human rights groups Moscow office, Sergei Nikitin, said U2 management had assured them all the necessary permits were in place.

The campaigners have since been released, police said.

News Agency Agence France-Presse AFP also reported that police forced volunteers from U2s own charity fund, the ONE Campaign against AIDS, out of Moscows Luzhniki stadium.

Tents set up by Greenpeace Russia were also moved on according to the organisations director Ivan Blokov.

"We were not allowed to collect signatures and to talk to people," he said.

"Our activities were agreed with U2s management, so we are very much surprised."

Mr Nikitin added that Amnesty had been present at many of the bands concerts throughout their European tour.

"I dont know if Bono knows about what happened to us," he said.

"It was a typical publicity event, which this organisation has carried out in every city where U2 has performed."

During the gig, Bono invited Russian rock star turned anti-Kremlin activist Yuri Shevchuk onstage for a rendition of Knockin on Heavens Door.

The Irish singer called his Russian counterpart a "great man".

On Sunday, Mr Shevchuk appeared at a banned concert in central Moscow protesting against plans to build a motorway through a forest.

Meanwhile, U2 have been fined by Spanish authorities for playing too loud at their gigs in Barcelona.

The group, who performed at the Nou Camp Stadium in June and July last year, have been told they must pay 14,723 for exceeding noise limits.

The fine was also imposed for rehearsal time running late and missing the midnight deadline.

The gigs were part of their 360 tour, which helped make them last years biggest-selling band in the world.

Red carpet rolled out for Emmys AP

LOS ANGELES With the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards just days away, the round-the-clock preparations are already under way at the Nokia Theatre, where the awards will be presented Sunday. Heres a look at whats already happening in Hollywood leading up to televisions biggest night:

___

STARRY, STARRY NIGHT: After winning or losing Emmys, 3,600 celebrities and other invitees will end the evening at the Governors Ball inside the West Hall of the Los Angeles Convention Center, just steps away from the Nokia Theatre. The behemoth 57,600-square-foot space has already been transformed into a celestial heaven for Sundays galactic dinner party.

"This is a very large room," said designer Dwight Jackson. "Its bigger than a football field."

To turn the colossal hall into an intimate ballroom, the space has been surrounded by 50,000-square-feet of black drapery. Thousands of tiny mirror balls dangle from the ceiling around a giant disco ball encased in a glittering sun sculpture hung above the stage, while giant glowing spheres representing each sign of the zodiac circle the dance floor.

During a preview event Wednesday, attendees noshed on samples of this years Governors Ball menu: crab salad with avocado mouse and salsa verde, rack of lamb with grilled eggplant and rosemary juice, an assortment of brownies and cakes for dessert and The Emmy, a cocktail made with orange-flavored vodka, peach brandy, lime juice, simple syrup and bitters.

___

SETTING THE STAGE: Stagehands were hard at work Wednesday constructing the sprawling Emmys set on stage inside the Nokia Theatre. Unlike last years show, which featured the control room in a corner of the stage, this years scenery includes five giant flatscreens, vertical lights and multiple copper and white walls covered in a textured square pattern.

Meanwhile, in the audience, placards mark celebs spots. The "Modern Family" brood is next to the "Lost" castaways, while the "Glee" student body is across from the "30 Rock" team. Among those with front-row seats are Neil Patrick Harris, Jon Hamm, Julianna Margulies and Betty White, who won at the Creative Arts Emmys for her "Saturday Night Live" hosting gig.

___

RED CARPET ROLLOUT: The Emmys are a big deal. Just ask Jimmy Fallon. The host said he was reminded of the ceremonys importance when dozens of photographers and reporters were on hand Wednesday morning to document him merely unraveling a roll of carpet with executive producer Don Mischner and Academy of Television Arts and Sciences chairman John Schaffner.

"This is insane," said Fallon. "We just rolled out the carpet. Thats all we did."

For the third year, the show will be held at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles and the red carpet more like a red sidewalk, really will canvas the entire plaza across from the Staples Center. Before the rollout, Fallon joked he hoped this years red carpet unveiling would go better than last year when "we rolled it out, and Paula Abdul was found."
