Robbie Williams says he almost didnt meet up with Take That the night they reunited because hed said some "nasty things" about his bandmate Gary Barlow.

"Its one of those situations in life that could be very explosive and go completely wrong," he told BBC Radio 1 breakfast DJ Chris Moyles.

Williams and Barlow have written a song about their estrangement, called Shame.

It had its first play on BBC Radio 1 on Thursday during the pairs first interview together in 15 years.

Williams said hed reunited with his former bandmates after an invitation to get together in LA.

He said: "I was very nervous because there were four of them. I came so close to not going because I had toothache that night and Id just taken a painkiller.

"I was quite large as well, and I thought I cant go mumbling, looking like Elvis.

"Id said some nasty things about Gaz. What do I do if I go in, is he harbouring anything? So the missus pushed me through the door."

"It was very exciting, very liberating."

He went on to reveal that he invited the band back to his house the next night, where he was able to have a proper discussion with Barlow.

"I spent the last 15 years thinking what I was going to say. We had that big chat and the most amazing thing happened at the end of it, we both said sorry to each other and we both meant it.

"Thats all we needed. It just lifted so much off my shoulders that I didnt know was still there."

"It was the start of a very magical 18 months that weve had since then, writing songs together, getting to know each other.

"Its nice being able to be grown-ups and hear each other and say sorry because not many people can do that."

Williams left the band, which also consists of Jason Orange, Mark Owen and Howard Donald, to pursue a solo career back in 1995.

Sounded stupid

Following the initial split, relations between the band-members became strained.

Barlow admits it was also a huge weight off his shoulders when the five-piece met up again last year.

He said: "All these things had been built up for so long, they just sounded stupid as they were coming out. We just needed to sit opposite each other and talk.

"I must say I had a good sleep after that."

Williams went on: "Youve got to be ready to take some responsibility for your own actions, as well. And fortunately we were both in a place to go Yeah, that happened, that wasnt too great Im not proud of it and Im sorry."

As for specific details about what happened, Williams admits things are a bit hazy. He said: "Its so many rehabs ago. Theres so much vodka underneath the bridge."

Barlow admitted the other band members also felt a certain degree of responsibility for Williams.

One regret

He added: "I think we had a lot of guilt, the four of us, because Rob was the youngest, the most impressionable of all of us. We always felt like we didnt look after him enough.

"If there was one big thing we sat and regretted it was always that."

The pair confirmed that Take That had recorded an album together, which is as yet untitled, and will be released in November.

Barlow said: "Were talking about a tour right now - hopefully next summer we will tour.

Williams added: "Theres some stuff on the cards but theres only so much we can talk about now.

"Theres big plans in the works, but when, where and what were not allowed to say. Plus we dont really know."

As to whether Williams return to the band will be permanent, Barlow isnt so sure.

He said: "This is our 20th year for all of us this year. So to do a one-off album, and maybe a one-off tour would be a great thing this year. We all agreed that unless it was a great record we wouldnt even go there and weve got a great record.

"I think once weve done that Rob will go back to being Rob and well go back to being a four, I think itll resume to how it was."

The new single Shame is out on 4 October and will be included in Williams greatest hits album In and Out of Consciousness, which is out on 11 October.
