NEW YORK Lindsay Lohan wants your respect.

In the upcoming issue of Vanity Fair, the 24-year-old actress admits making mistakes in the past and "dabbling in certain things."

But in a July interview with the magazine before she served 14 days in jail followed by 23 days of inpatient rehab, she defended her actions, saying she was young and curious and was associating with the wrong people.

"So many people around me would say they cared for the wrong reasons," Lohan said. "A lot of people were pulling from me, taking from me and not giving. I had a lot of people that were there for me for, you know, the party."

Lohan says she used to get her news from tabloids, which she now calls "scary and sad."

"I would look up to those girls ... the Britneys and whatever," she said. "And I would be like, I want to be like that."

Despite everything, Lohan is confident in her acting abilities and future: "I dont care what anyone says. I know that Im a damn good actress."

She says shell do whatever it takes to fix her party-girl image.

"I want my career back," she said. "I want the respect that I had when I was doing great movies. And if that takes not going out to a club at night, then so be it. Its not fun anyway."

She also addresses issues with her father, Michael Lohan, saying, "I think my biggest focus for myself is learning how to continue to get through the trauma that my father has caused in my life."

Lohan talks about the mixed signals of seeing her father in court crying over her but then speaking to the media afterward.

Nancy Jo Sales, who wrote the article, says Lohan got emotional when talking about her younger sister Alis presence in the courtroom. Lohan described seeing her sister cry as heartbreaking.

Lohan has a busy schedule ahead of her. Shes required to comply with outpatient rehab, which includes two psychotherapy, two behavior therapy and five 12-step sessions a week.

Her next movie, "Machete," directed by Robert Rodriguez, hits theaters on Sept. 3.

Bristol Palin, Hasselhoff join "Dancing With the Stars"

NEW YORK | Mon Aug 30, 2010 11:54pm EDT

NEW YORK Reuters - Bristol Palin, daughter of conservative powerbroker Sarah Palin, will test her dance moves against former "Baywatch" star David Hasselhoff and R&B singer Brandy in the new season of "Dancing with the Stars."

The lineup for the 11th season of the TV dancing contest, set to premiere on September 20, will also include crooner Michael Bolton, reality TV star Mike Sorrentino, and actress Jennifer Grey, who twirled to fame in the film "Dirty Dancing."

Palin, 19, a single mom, is following in the reality TV footsteps of her former fiance, Levi Johnston, whose small-screen adventures involve running for political office in Alaska -- and whose off-screen adventures have put him at odds with her mother.

She said she hoped her mother, the former Alaska governor and U.S. vice presidential candidate, would be on hand to watch her pair up with a professional dancer on the ballroom floor and compete against other celebrity/dancer couples.

"Shes excited for me. She knows this is going to be hard work," Palin said as the lineup for the show was announced on ABC on Monday.

Since giving birth to a son Tripp in December 2008, Palin has featured in entertainment shows, magazines, and made her acting debut on a U.S. TV show centered around teenage pregnancy. Her ex- fiance has appeared in "Playgirl" and on various TV shows.

"Dancing with the Stars" was the second-biggest show on TV last season, behind "American Idol," averaging 20 million viewers. Reigning champ is Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger who teamed with dancer Derek Hough.

For the 11th season, Palin will be joined by a host of well-known names, including Hasselhoff, who quit his job as a judge on "Americas Got Talent" earlier this year after four years and a public struggle with alcohol abuse.

From the reality TV world, Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino from "Jersey Shore" will enhance his growing profile along with actress Audrina Patridge from "The Hills."

Fans of the TV family sitcom "The Brady Brunch" will be able to watch actress and TV talk show host Florence Anderson, 76, who played Carol Brady in the popular 1970s show.

Fellow contestant Jennifer Grey said at the announcement she doubted she would have an advantage from her dance training opposite the late Patrick Swayze in the 1987 film.

"Im 50. Its been a lot of years since then," she said.

Former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner, retired basketball player Rick Fox, comedian Margaret Cho and teen U.S. actor Kyle Massey from Disney show "Cory in the House" completed the lineup.

Alec Baldwin says `30 Rock Emmy run couldnt last AP

NEW YORK Alec Baldwin is philosophical about the end of "30 Rock"s three-year run as best comedy at the Emmys.

The NBC show lost its lock on the category Sunday as "Modern Family" won best comedy series. Baldwin also saw his two-year streak as outstanding actor in a comedy series come to an end. He lost to Jim Parsons of CBS "The Big Bang Theory."

"Nothing can last forever. We knew that eventually wed have to watch someone else pick up the Emmy; this is the year it happened," said Baldwin, who was at an event for the opening of the U.S. Open tennis tournament in New York City. "Weve been very lucky, and I cant complain. Im a big Jim Parsons fan."

He cant say the same for ABCs "Modern Family" but thats not because he has any ill will toward it.

"Ive never watched `Modern Family," he admitted. However, he blames that on the flights he takes. Baldwin said he watches most of his sitcoms on airplanes, and the flights he takes only show NBC and CBS shows.

"I used to see `Everybody Loves Raymond on the plane; Ive watched every damn episode," he said with a laugh.

Baldwin is a longtime fan of tennis. He was at Arthur Ashe Stadium as the U.S. Open marked its first night with a celebration honoring tennis great Martina Navratilova and current player James Blake, among others.

Paris Hilton likely to avoid jail on cocaine bust

LOS ANGELES | Mon Aug 30, 2010 9:32pm EDT

LOS ANGELES Reuters - Paris Hilton was charged on Monday with cocaine possession after a high-profile arrest in Las Vegas during the weekend, but the socialite is unlikely to do a second stint behind bars.

Hilton, 29, faces up to four years in a Nevada prison if convicted of the felony charge of possessing 0.8 grams of "powder cocaine" in a purse.

But the Los Angeles Times, quoting a legal expert, said Hilton was more likely to be sentenced to a diversion program if prosecutors are able to prove their case.

Hilton and her boyfriend, Cy Waits, were stopped just before midnight on Friday after police said they smelled marijuana smoke coming from their vehicle. When a crowd formed, they were taken to the nearby Wynn Hotel for some privacy.

The police report details that when Hilton asked to get some lip balm from her purse, an officer saw "a small bindle of what I believed to be cocaine in a clear baggy" and the bindle fell from the purse into the officers hand.

Hilton told police she had borrowed the purse from a friend, and she thought the cocaine was gum.

The Los Angeles Times quoted Dmitry Gorin, a former Los Angeles County prosecutor and noted defense attorney, as saying that prosecutors would need to prove that it was Hiltons purse and also have to overcome any doubts that the marijuana smell came from her vehicle.

Similar arrests are often made on the Las Vegas Strip, and most end up in some kind of diversion program unless the person has a lengthy prior record, he said.

Hilton has had dust-ups with the law, but she is not quite a hardened criminal. She spent three weeks in a Los Angeles jail in 2007 for violating probation on a reckless driving charge. In July, she was detained on suspicion of possessing marijuana in South Africa following a World Cup soccer match, but was released by police and not charged.

After her latest arrest, her lawyers issued a statement encouraging people "not to rush to judgment until all of the facts have been dealt with in a court of law." There was no further statement from the lawyers on Monday, and court officials in Las Vegas also declined comment.

Police Report: Cocaine In Purse Carried By Paris Hilton Literally Fell Into Officers Hands omg

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Paris Hiltons need to have moisturized lips over the weekend directly lead to the cocaine in the purse she was carrying literally dropping into a Las Vegas Police Officers hands, according to the newly released police report.

In the document, obtained by Access Hollywood included in the felony Possession of a Controlled Substance charge against the heiress, filed in court by the Clark County District Attorneys Office on Monday, an LVPD officer detailed how the cocaine discovery happened in the Wynn Hotel security holding room where the heiress was waiting for a female officer to arrive to take her to the bathroom.

"...Hilton said she needed to put some lip balm on, and I handed her the purse from the table. As she began to open it, I saw a small bundle of what I believed to be cocaine in a clear baggy begin to fall from the purse and into my hand," an officer wrote in his arrest report.

The officer then took the purse away from Hilton and waited for backup to arrive before searching it with another officer as a witness.

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, Hilton and her boyfriend, Cy Waits, were pulled over in Las Vegas on Friday night after a police officer allegedly noticed a strong smell of marijuana coming from the car Waits was driving. According to the newly released report, the officer claimed Waits failed a number of field sobriety tests after the couple was pulled over.

The officer claimed in his report that the gathering of a crowd of onlookers prompted Hilton to ask to go somewhere more private to "prevent her from being molested by the growing crowd." He also claimed that Hilton told the officers that pulled the couple over that she "needed to use the bathroom badly and asked if I would accompany her inside the Wynn Hotel."

After discovering the cocaine, the officer placed Hilton under arrest. Following her arrest, the officer claimed Hilton told him the purse was not hers and "she had borrowed it from a friend."

As the officer searched the rest of the bag, he discovered $1,300 in cash, credit cards and a broken Albuterol tablet used to treat breathing and chest tightness and Zig Zag wrappers, all of which Hilton reportedly claimed to the officer were hers.

She reportedly told the officer, however, that "several cosmetic items inside the purse were not hers "and that she thought the cocaine he found was "gum."

The Clark County DAs Office confirmed to Access on Monday that Hilton has now been charged with felony possession of a controlled substance and is due in court on October 27 at 7:30 AM. Waits, who was arrested on a misdemeanor driving under the influence charge, is due in court on November 29 at 8 AM.

In related news, on Sunday night, Hilton thanked her fans via Twitter for reaching out during her time of need.

"Im so thankful to all my fans for all the love and support you are giving me. Thank you all. Love you so much. Love Paris xoxo," she Tweeted.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, Hiltons lawyer, David Chesnoff, told Access, "This matter will be dealt with in the courts not in the media and I encourage people not to rush to judgment until all of the facts have been dealt with in a court of law. There will be no interviews and no more comments at this time."

Police: Paris Hilton Says Purse with Cocaine Was Not Hers omg

Following Paris Hiltons Las Vegas arrest on cocaine possession charges over the weekend, the socialite says the purse containing less than a gram of cocaine was not hers, according to a police report obtained by The Associated Press.

"She told me the purse was not hers, that she had borrowed it from a friend," Lt. Dennis Flynn was quoted as saying in the report.

Paris Hilton arrested on cocaine charge, police say

Though Hilton denied she owned a baggie containing 0.8 grams of cocaine, she did acknowledge that the money, credit cards and a broken tablet of the prescription asthma medication Albuterol in the purse were hers, according to police.

Hilton, whose TV credits include My New BFF and The Simple Life, was stopped late Friday after police officers detected what they thought to be marijuana smoke coming from the vehicle that was being driven by a friend. The heiress was arrested on cocaine possession charges shortly after.

The 29-year-old celebrity faces a felony drug possession charge that would get her probation if convicted. Her arraignment is scheduled for Oct. 27, a Clark County Court spokeswoman told TVGuide.com.

An e-mail to Hiltons rep was not immediately returned.

Emmy viewership rises slightly from year ago

LOS ANGELES | Mon Aug 30, 2010 4:08pm EDT

LOS ANGELES Reuters - The primetime Emmy awards telecast on Sunday night was watched by 13.5 million U.S. viewers, up slightly from a total audience of 13.3 million that tuned-in one year ago for U.S. televisions top honors.

The show, which aired on the NBC network, was hosted by Jimmy Fallon and was advanced roughly one month to August from mid-September, when it traditionally has been broadcast, to avoid competition with popular football broadcasts.

Last year, for instance, a football game that aired opposite the Emmys had about 65 percent more viewers than the awards show.

Also for the first time, the primetime Emmys aired live in all time zones across the United States, as compared to previous tape-delayed broadcasts on the west coast, which meant it aired outside primetime in heavily populated California.

While the 2009 Emmys featured big wins from existing shows such as "Mad Men" and "30 Rock," this years show saw the infusion of new programs including "Glee," "Modern Family" and "The Good Wife."

Although last night, "Mad Men" won best drama for the third straight year, "Modern Family" swooped in to take home the best comedy series.

Sundays viewership was the best since 2006, when 16.1 million tuned in. It was also over a million more viewers than the telecasts lowest ever 12.2 million in 2008, according to figures from media research company Nielsen.

Summer dollars rise, attendance dips for Hollywood AP

LOS ANGELES Hollywood is finishing its summer with record revenue but the lowest actual movie attendance in five years.

Domestic receipts from the first weekend in May through the upcoming Labor Day weekend should come in at about $4.35 billion $100 million more than the record set last year, according to Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com.

Attendance is down because of a steep rise in ticket prices, heavily due to a surge in 3-D screenings, which cost a few dollars more than regular movie admissions.

Through Labor Day, the actual number of tickets sold during the summer season is expected to come in at 552 million, the lowest since 563.2 million tickets were sold in summer 2005, Dergarabedian estimated Monday.

Ticket prices this year are averaging $7.88, according to the National Association of Theatre Owners. Thats up 38 cents, or 5 percent, from 2009.

"To have record revenue built on the back of much higher ticket prices, in a way, its kind of a shallow victory. You want to see attendance go up every year, not down," Dergarabedian said.

The summer delivered some huge crowd-pleasers, led by Disneys "Toy Story 3," which followed "Shrek 2" as just the second animated film to top $400 million at the domestic box office.

Paramounts "Iron Man 2" shot past $300 million, while Summit Entertainments "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" has almost hit that mark. Topping $200 million were the Warner Bros. release "Inception," Paramount and DreamWorks Animations "Shrek Forever After" and Universals "Despicable Me."

Sony had three $100 million hits with "The Karate Kid," "Grown Ups" and "Salt."

Other releases failed to live up to the hype of summer blockbuster season, among them the Warner Bros. sequel "Sex and the City 2," Disneys "The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" and "The Sorcerers Apprentice," and 20th Century Foxs "Marmaduke" and "Knight and Day."

"Audiences were underwhelmed, and they voted with their absence," Dergarabedian said. "If you asked most people what they thought of the quality of the movies, its kind of a so-so summer. We could have done a lot worse were it not for films like `Inception and `Toy Story 3."

RV dealer challenges Twilight star to push-ups AP

LOS ANGELES The owner of an RV dealership sued by Taylor Lautner over a customized vehicle challenged the "Twilight" star Monday to use his muscles instead of his lawyers to resolve the case.

Brent McMahon, who owns McMahons RV in Irvine, Calif., offered to compete in a push-up contest to settle the breach of contract lawsuit that Lautner filed Aug. 23 claiming the dealership failed to deliver a $300,000 RV on time for use as a dressing room on the set of the actors latest film.

McMahon and his attorney denied wrongdoing and said they will vigorously defend the case in court if Lautner, 18, doesnt accept the challenge.

The dealership said Lautners camp had sought a $40,000 settlement to resolve the case, leading to the unorthodox proposal by McMahon. The 47-year-old businessman said if he won the contest, he would donate the settlement money to Childrens Hospital of Orange County.

Lautners attorney Robert Barta declined comment, citing the pending lawsuit.

Lautners lawsuit claimed McMahons failed to complete the customized RV on time, and it needed additional work after it was delivered.

It was unclear what upgrades Lautner sought. McMahon said the vehicle was given a custom paint job.

Lautner gained fame for his role as Jacob Black in the "Twilight" movie series. He is currently filming "Abduction" and will reprise his role as Black in the two-part "Twilight" finale.

Mel Gibson movie appeal little changed by tapes - poll

NEW YORK | Mon Aug 30, 2010 2:23pm EDT

NEW YORK Reuters - Mel Gibson may be suffering one of the worst media scandals of his career, but a new poll shows it is having a relatively small impact on the movie stars box office appeal.

In a 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll released on Monday. more than three quarters of Americans said they would not be affected by audiotapes of phone calls, widely reported to be Gibson ranting at his estranged ex-girlfriend, when deciding whether to see one of the Oscar winners films.

Asked if they were less likely to buy a ticket for a Gibson movie after hearing the tapes posted on the Internet, 76 percent of Americans -- including 80 percent of men and 72 percent of women -- picked , "No, no effect," in the poll by magazine Vanity Fair and television news program 60 Minutes.

Gibson, whose movies include "Braveheart" and "The Passion of the Christ," has in the past been embroiled in other scandals including making anti-Semitic comments to a California police officer in 2006.

In the now infamous tapes of calls between he and former girlfriend and Russian-born model Oksana Grigorieva, a voice said to be Gibsons rants and curses during an argument dealing with their baby daughter.

The tapes, which were posted in July at Radaronline.com, made headlines worldwide and since then, film industry pundits have wondered what the long-term fallout would be on Gibsons movie career and box office appeal.

He has two movies that have wrapped production, "The Beaver" and "How I Spent My Summer Vacation." His most recent "Edge of Darkness," which landed in theaters this past January, failed to ignite much of a spark at box offices.

In a separate poll question, Republican Sarah Palin, the 2008 vice presidential candidate whose rift with the former fiancee of her teenage daughter, Bristol, also has attracted recent U.S. tabloid coverage, was deemed an ineffective future president by 59 percent of Americans.

Six in ten Americans -- including 75 percent of Democrats, 40 percent of Republicans and 63 percent of Independents -- said Palin would not make an effective President, while only 26 percent overall believed she would have the ability to fulfill the role, according to the Vanity Fair/60 Minutes poll.

And contrary to the vampire mania that has spread in recent years among films, books and TV shows such as the popular "Twilight" and "True Blood," the poll said more Americans believe in ghosts than vampires.

Asked to choose which was most believable among vampires, ghosts, U.F.O.s, Bigfoot, or the Loch Ness Monster, 33 percent overall picked ghosts, followed closely by U.F.O.s at 30 percent. Vampires scored a mere seven percent.

The poll, which is posted at VF.com, is a monthly measure of U.S. attitudes on topics including culture, lifestyle, current events, and politics. The CBS News interviewing facility conducted a random sample of 847 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone.

Nannies could testify in Anna Nicole Smith case AP

LOS ANGELES The drug conspiracy trial of two doctors and the lawyer-boyfriend of Anna Nicole Smith entered its second month with the prosecution nearing the end of its case but for a lingering question: Will the nannies testify?

Nadine Alexie and Quethlie Alexis are Haitians who worked as nannies for Smith in the Bahamas caring for her baby.

They have not testified in a public forum, but their comments to private and government investigators have been the subject of controversy since Smith died at age 39 of a drug overdose.

During a lengthy preliminary hearing last year, a Department of Justice investigator read statements made to him during an interview of Nadine Alexie in which she said defendants Howard K. Stern and Dr. Khristine Eroshevich persuaded Smith to take drugs that sometimes left her asleep for three days at a time.

Sections of the lengthy transcript of interviews with the two women by investigator Danny Santiago were excised from the hearing by the judge who said they were too inflammatory.

Stern, Eroshevich, who is a psychiatrist, and Dr. Sandeep Kapoor have pleaded not guilty to charges related to over-prescribing drugs and illegally obtaining drugs for Smith under pseudonyms. They are not charged with causing Smiths 2007 overdose death, which was ruled an accident.

Superior Court Judge Robert Perry asked last week if the nannies would testify.

"If I were the defense I would prepare for their testimony," Deputy District Attorney Renee Rose said. "We are doing what we can to bring them here."

The judge pressed further: "You are remarkably evasive regarding the nannies."

Co-prosecutor David Burkhart said there were visa and travel problems because the nannies would be coming from the Bahamas.

Rose said she hoped they would arrive this week, but defense attorney Steve Sadow, who represents Stern, raised the problem of language translations for one of the nannies who speaks a Creole dialect. The judge asked if Rose had arranged for a translator and she said she had not.

"Im not sure theres a Creole interpreter in all of Los Angeles," said the judge, who suggested she notify the court interpreters office immediately.

"The nannies are in the wind, so to speak," the judge said.

Before court recessed last week, a proposed prosecution witness testified outside the jurys presence.

Ford Shelley Jr., a member of a South Carolina family with whom Smith stayed during the last months of her life, said he had no memory of seeing medication bottles with Sterns name on them in Smiths possession.

Asked if he had ever expressed an opinion about Stern, Shelley said vehemently, "Ive said it before and Ill say it now. He wouldnt have done anything to hurt her and I dont know why hes here."

His sister-in-law, Melaine Thompson, gave lengthy testimony about Smiths deterioration after the death of her son, Daniel.

Sadow asked: "You never once observed Howard K. Stern give Anna medication, is that correct?"

"Correct," answered the witness.

Artmedia agency said Corneau had been suffering from cancer and died overnight Sunday to Monday.

Throughout a career lasting more than 35 years, Corneau directed many legends of French cinema, including Catherine Deneuve and Gerard Depardieu.

Depardieu starred alongside his son Guillaume in "Tous les Matins du Monde" "All the Mornings of the World". The film, the story of a 17th-century musician, won considerable critical acclaim at home and abroad. It garnered seven Cesar awards, the French equivalent of the Academy Awards, and was nominated for a Golden Globe for best foreign film.

The office of French President Nicolas Sarkozy hailed Corneau as a "courageous man" and a "great director."

Through his films, "Corneau pursued an unceasing investigation into what makes humans human," said Sarkozys office in a statement.

Born on Aug. 7, 1943, Corneau dabbled in music before making his start in cinema as an assistant for Greek-born filmmaker Costa-Gavras. Early on in his career, he made a series of thrillers, including "Choice of Arms," a 1981 gangster flick starring Deneuve, Gerard Depardieu and Yves Montand.

Festival organisers calculated that there were 40,254 performances of 2,453 shows in 259 venues across the city.

Fringe Society chief executive Kath Mainland said: "Edinburgh is without doubt the worlds leading festival destination."

In addition to official venues, the Fringe High Street Events team registered 662 acts from street performers to buskers and Fringe artists.

An estimated 21,148 performers took to the stage during Fringe 2010 and 558 shows were absolutely free.

Comedy made up 35% of the Fringe programme, followed closely by Theatre with 29%.

Cee Lo says f-bomb song is art AP

NEW YORK Cee Los expletive-laden song has been criticized for being in poor taste, but the musician says its actually a work of art.

"What Ive tried to accomplish, like, is making art products ... so I still believe that the song can be classified as art because its an original piece and the edge and alternative is there, and the integrity is intact," he said in an interview last week.

The song, about a gold-digging ex, is titled "Expletive You" and he drops 16 f-bombs in just 3 1/2 minutes over a sweet-sounding, retro groove. The current video is a colorful stream of the songs lyrics and its been viewed more than 3.7 million times in the last 11 days on the singers YouTube page. An official video will be released this week and the song will appear on Cee Los album "The Lady Killer," out on Dec. 7.

Though the jam has gotten rave reviews, its also had its share of criticism. Dan Isett, the director of public policy for the Parents Television Council, said in a statement that the song "is just the latest example of an entertainment industry bent on racing to the bottom of the barrel."

But Cee Lo said he was trying to elevate music with the song, and its something that the music industry does not do enough.

"The system does not, you know, advocate art so to speak, but it does package and promote products and product placement and theres a definitive difference between the two, art and product," he said. "I have yet to sit down and try to write something for the sake of radio. I just never done it, not consciously."

Still, there will be a radio-friendly version of the viral hit: The mildly titled "Forget You" will hit airwaves soon, though Cee Lo says that wasnt the initial plan.

"It wasnt like we were looking for it to be a radio hit of some sort. It was only until a short time after that we considered doing a clean version just in case," he said.

Cee Lo is best-known as one-half of the Grammy-winning duo Gnarls Barkley, who had the instant classic "Crazy." He first appeared on the music scene in 1995 with the Southern hip-hop group Goodie Mob.

Cee Lo calls the success of his latest song "a miracle of some sort." Although he may have lofty views of its artistic merit, hes also aware that its just a dose of naughtiness too.

"I get to be bad a little bit so thats what was fun about it. Its quite a bit of mischief in that song, so we werent taking ourselves too seriously," he said.

In October, Cee Lo will host Fuse TVs "Lay It Down," an interview and performance-based show he calls "more intimate and off the record."

The Polar Music Prize is typically shared each year by a pop artist and a classical musician. It was founded by the manager of Swedens legendary pop group ABBA, Stig Anderson, in 1989.

Car strikes gate outside Stephen Kings Maine home AP

BANGOR, Maine Authorities say a car rammed into the security gate outside Stephen Kings home in Maine.

Bangor police Sgt. Paul Edwards says 25-year-old Renee Harris of Alton told police that an oncoming car veered into her lane about 9 a.m. Sunday. She swerved and crash into the custom-made black iron fence. No one was injured.

At least two people have gotten in trouble trying to reach the popular horror author at home over the years. In 1991, a man broke in while Kings wife was home alone. Emmy wins prove "modern" families are U.S. hits

NEW YORK | Mon Aug 30, 2010 9:03am EDT

NEW YORK Reuters - Gay marriage and interracial adoptions can be divisive topics across America, but a new crop of TV shows and films showing "modern" families are winning audiences and awards.

Television show "Modern Family" won the best comedy series Emmy on Sunday. "Glee" was also honored and new films such as "The Kids Are All Right" and documentaries are finding that families outside the mom, dad and two kids norm can make decent financial returns.

"Television is reflecting the way the American family has evolved, the way society has evolved," said Todd Gold, managing editor of Fancast.com. "The shows we are seeing on prime time as well as movies like The Kids Are All Right are looking at a new kind of family."

Mockumentary-style comedy "Modern Family" features a gay couple and their Vietnamese baby and a man married to a much younger Colombian woman. Eric Stonestreet, who plays one of the gay fathers on "Modern Family", won a best supporting actor Emmy for his performance.

The characters on musical comedy "Glee," include a gay teen who has a crush on a straight football player and a geeky girl adopted at birth by two men.

The two TV shows, which won a combined total of 10 Emmys on Sunday, currently reach a healthy ten million strong U.S. audience each.

"We knew we didnt want to do things that family shows had done before," said "Modern Family" co-creator Christopher Lloyd.

Both Lloyd and pop culture experts said Hollywood was following society rather the other way round.

"Society is leading Hollywood, but there are writers and producers and directors who see these markets," said Jay Mechling, professor of American Studies at University of California, Davis.

He said the "the millennial generation" -- those born in the 1980s and 1990s -- are "much more casual and accepting" of a variety of family arrangements.

QUALITY, & COMMON THEMES STILL CRUCIAL

Rather than controversial storylines, winning audiences and awards comes down to quality and broader themes that everyone can relate to, experts said.

"As long as it is not overtly political, and gift-wrapped in entertainment that is good, Americans will embrace it," Gold said. "They dont want to miss out on something that is good."

Also, Americans are less judgmental when it comes to entertainment than they might be in real-life debates.

"While many may disagree with issues like gay marriage, Americans have shown that they are incredibly tolerant and accepting when it comes to entertainment," Gold said.

Lloyd said "Modern Family" reflected common emotional ties such as struggles to raise kids and family decisions.

"We try to find identifiable moments in the lives of these characters where the audience can go "Wow, that happened in my house" he said. "Thats where you cement the viewers allegiance to your show."

In addition, the gay couple in the show emphasize parental responsibility. "They are not finger-snappy fabulous gay guys. They are more homey, slightly nerdier, smarter gay guys and in many ways the most traditional of the parental units in our show, so I dont think we ever thought that was going to be too much for Americans to accept," said Lloyd.

In film, Jennifer Aniston took on the issue of single mothers and sperm donors in her latest movie "The Switch".

"The Kids Are All Right" -- about a lesbian couple raising two kids who want to contact their sperm donor father -- has won rave reviews for actress Julianne Moore and sparked Oscar buzz for her screen partner Annette Bening.

The independent film has more than quadrupled its production budget, pulling in $18 million in the United States and is soon to open overseas.

Documentaries like "Sperm Donor X" by Deirdre Fishel and "Single Choice: Many Lives" by Anne Catherine Hundhausen are also portraying families in a way that is more in tune with changes in U.S. society.

"Its not excluding the traditional American family either. We are just seeing more variety," Gold said

Ask Matt: Closer, True Blood, Eureka, Mad Men, Terriers and More omg

The Closer | Photo Credits: Karen Neal/TNT" style="margin:0 5px 5px" />

Send questions to askmatt@tvguidemagazine.com and follow me on Twitter

Question: I absolutely love The Closer Its one of my favorite shows and I am always so eager to watch that I usually dont even wait for my DVR to get ahead enough to allow me to skip commercials. This season started off with a bang and Ive loved it, but Im a little concerned. What will happen if Brenda does become chief? On one hand, as a woman, I think it would be great for the character to be a female Chief of Police in Los Angeles. On the other hand, I am afraid for what that would mean for her position as a "closer." If she gets some distance from the cases, how can she possibly get all of those confessions that have the audience on the edge of their seats? Plus, I have not enjoyed the rather jerk-like qualities this whole process has brought out in Pope. I know hes got his heart set on being chief, but it seems a little uncharacteristic for him to be such a jerk now when he has not gone completely into that territory before. Please tell me that whatever is in the works is going to maintain the same quality of scripts and keep Brenda right in the middle of the action Do you have any insight into the rest of the season or what impact this whole development would have for the future of the show? Beth

Matt Roush: Now thats a true sign of devotion, watching a show in real time, not DVR time. Im very fond of The Closer as well. Its easily my households favorite summer procedural. And were watching it just as you are, with no foreknowledge of how this hunt for the new chief is going to turn out. See my recent discussion of this being a spoiler-free zone for why thats the case. Your concerns make sense to me, in that too much tinkering with a successful formula doesnt always make much sense and can do more harm than good in the long run. See recent seasons of House. Still, I cant imagine a scenario in which Brenda is removed from the day-to-day detection of cases, and if she were promoted to such a position, I would bet it would be short-lived. But this current arc has been mostly good for the show this season, I think, adding some tension between Brenda and Pope, between Brenda and the long-suffering Fritz and distinguishing it from years past. Not always easy for a long-running crime drama. Showing chinks in Popes armor, and then watching him deflate last week when he learned he wasnt even on the short list, gives the invaluable J.K. Simmons something to play, which is always a good thing. Whatever happens as this season winds down, Im thinking you shouldnt worry that theyll muck up the show you love too drastically.

On another Closer note: Even if youre not a regular viewer, this weeks episode is a standout, as Brenda contends with a military overseer Gary Cole, excellent as usual after off-duty soldiers are gunned down in what looks like a gang-related murder. Strong stuff.

Question: Unfortunately, shows dont always receive a final decision on whether or not they will return for another season before they finish filming their current season. This often leaves more than a few fans more than a little annoyed when the season finale has to serve as a series finale. They are rarely satisfying as a last episode especially if it ends with a cliffhanger. Since True Blood is my current obsession, I am a bit worried about it. They only received a one-year pick up from HBO and I think it was after they had finished filming the current season 3. Why do you think it was only for a year instead of a multi-year pick up? I thought the show was doing really well. And do you think that Alan Ball and his team have any sort of contingency plot/plan for a satisfying season 4 finale in case they dont receive a pick up for season 5? Dana

Matt Roush: Of all the things to worry about, a premature termination of True Blood should not be one of them. HBO renewed the show early in the game this season, and given its momentum, I think its fair to say that the show will end whenever Alan Ball decides its time, and not an episode before. Whatever business reasons are behind HBO renewing the show a season at a time, I couldnt say. But its hardly a sign of no confidence. Given the buzz and the ratings for this show, which HBO had been lacking since The Sopranos and Sex and the City signed off, Im sure HBO would be thrilled if True Blood were, like many of its key characters, immortal.

Question: I was wondering why Emmy voters are not giving True Blood the support it deserves. Granted, it is up for best drama this year, but we all know theyll give it to the juggernaut Mad Men, even if MMs last season was much slower and weaker than what I like to call the wild amusement park ride of True Blood. Sure they have the cool, sophisticated Don Draper, but come on, what viewer wasnt yelling at the cliffhangers throughout the entire Maryann season? Mad Men didnt really get out of 1st gear until the very last few shows. Im thinking that maybe older voters might be turned off by the over-the-top dramatics, sex, language, carnage, etc. Or maybe, everyone was late to the party since it is on HBO and fewer people have HBO so word of mouth was slower. At any rate, I know its probably a chance in vampire hell, but what do you think? JL

Matt Roush: [NOTE: This column was put together before the Emmys aired, as there was no time to revise it afterward] Much as I enjoy True Blood, the truth is it wouldnt have a chance getting noticed at the Emmys if it didnt air on HBO. Being on HBO almost always gives a show an advantage, because Im convinced its one of the few things nearly everyone in the industry who all probably wish they worked for HBO pays attention to. True, it hasnt helped much with HBOs recent miserable slate of comedies, but were lucky the networks and Showtime have stepped in to fill that particular void. True Blood is great fun, and without doubt has more incident in a single episode than Mad Men seems to muster in an entire season, but thats hardly the point. True Blood is too weird and extreme and uneven to be taken seriously as an Emmy contender. If Im wrong, and it somehow wins the best drama prize, consider me shocked. And amused. The fact that Lost won for its first season is something of a miracle. The Emmy voters do not tend to embrace genre shows very easily, and True Blood for all its enjoyable qualities lacks the gravitas, coherence and yes the humanity of most of its competition.

Question: TV Guide Magazine used to run a "best show youre not watching feature," but perhaps there should be subcategories? I would like to put in a vote for Eureka as "the most charming show people arent watching." Ive always enjoyed Eureka, but I feel as if it has been rejuvenated this year with the alternative time-line reboot. While always light, Ive felt some urgency in terms of the multiple ongoing romantic stories this year. Henrys rendition of "She Blinded Me With Science" for Grace made me smile more than any romantic gesture on TV for some time. What have you thought of it recently? I see it has been renewed, but what is the timeline for seeing the back end of these episodes or the new season? While USA is always good about telling the audience the minute a finale ends when the new episodes will be, SyFy barely advertises Eureka I always have to hunt for the start date. Why do they do that? Rebecca

Matt Roush: Cable schedules, especially when they split seasons in two, are often confusing, and Syfy can be especially mystifying. It would be nice if Syfy would announce the return date for a show like Eureka around the time of its summer finale, but maybe they want to keep their options open in case they need this asset to return to the schedule sooner or later than they think. The good news is that Eureka is still going strong, and I agree this has been its most enjoyable and freshest season in quite a while. The show that seems to me to have been hurt the most by Syfys stop-and-start scheduling is Caprica, which was just beginning to build some momentum when it ended its season back in March. The second half of its season wont air until January, and thats a potentially fatal amount of time to be dark. Especially for a show that dark.

Question: FX has always done great in the drama area, so what is the "buzz" with Terriers? Looks to be interesting, and on a side note, any Emmy chances for Rescue Me or due to the scheduling, will it be forgotten about again? Glenn

Matt Roush: I assume youre talking about next years Emmy chances for the current season of Rescue Me, and youre probably right than unless FX makes a big promotional push during the nominating and balloting period or if the new episodes from the final season begin airing around that time it may fall off the radar as the show did this year. Which is a shame, but FX shows tend to have some trouble breaking through the clutter. Recent cases in point: Justified and, in many eyes, Sons of Anarchy.

With Terriers which I review in the current issue of TV Guide Magazine and which will be posted online closer to the Sept. 8 premiere, FX is hewing closer to the Justified model in introducing heroes small-time, unlicensed, shaggy-dog P.I.s who arent particularly tormented. Theyre a mess, but not miserably so. The pilots tone is rather light though not without some tragic elements, but the story does take on darker and more violent hues as it goes on. Im an early fan, but do worry that the shows whats-it-mean title and offbeat underdog sensibility may make it something of a slow build. Still, Id recommend it over roughly 80-90% of the new shows the broadcast networks are serving up this fall.

Question: I have a question about BBC America [BBCA] as a whole. Now dont take this as meaning Im in a show for the nudity and profanity. However, I find the censoring they do enormously annoying. BBCA does this frequently. They blur Georges rumpus-roast in Being Human and eliminate words, and since Im deaf and need the closed captions, occasionally use symbols. An example would be in the late-great Torchwood they used @ in certain words. In Being Humans case they seem to have neither rhyme nor reason. They let a euphemism for fecal matter fly while censoring the "frak" symbolized word. I remember seeing far worse on Saving Grace and Nip/Tuck. I know they dont censor on-demand, however, nor do they closed-caption the on-demand. I find the censoring does distract my attention from the story; my mind jumps to the "aw, come on" mode. I still watch, and love, some, but well, aw come on. Other times I cant even make it through the initial episodes Inbetweeners and Skins jump to mind. Mind you, I do buy the DVD later and watch and enjoy some of the shows. Why the [censor] do they [censor] do this [censor]? Pun intended, but you get the idea. Scott

Matt Roush: This and the next question both find fault and express surprise that ad-supported cable whether on the basic tier or, in the case of BBCA, digital still operates with standards-and-practices prudence. While the decency rules are much looser on cable than for broadcast, and certain networks FX in particular, and AMC more and more are pushing the envelope as far as they can, there are still concessions made to placate advertisers and to agree not go quite as far as on the pay no commercials services. I agree its a much different experience watching the uncut Inbetweeners and Skins than watching them on BBCA, where the bleeps are so constant it feels like theyre written in Morse code. Call me old-fashioned, but I can still be shocked by what they get away with on over-the-air TV across the pond. But with Being Human, I tend to get the gist of what theyre saying and often graphically doing. I can live with the bleeps as long as they keep importing the good stuff.

Question: Was The Glades made for another broadcast company and then somehow found its way on to A&E? I ask because I notice it having dialogue removed, and that seems strange for a show it ordered. I also notice this on its many reruns, almost as if it seems more concerned with language than the broadcast networks. Insights? Dennis

Matt Roush: Ive watched a handful of Glades episodes and never noticed this "problem," but I got a handful of comments about this, so it must have been noticeable on some of the episodes Ive missed. The Glades was produced for A&E, so thats not the issue, but the way I figure it, having seen the same thing happen with other basic-cable entities Im thinking here of Breaking Bad and AMC, when the language gets too rough, the network steps in and as opposed to cutting the scene entirely, it just omits the offending word, leaving it to our imagination. Gives the producers creative license to film the scene the way they want which can be preserved on DVD, but then is altered to adhere to what can sometimes seem an arbitrary and inconsistent set of standards.

Question: I hope youve given Memphis Beat another chance. A few weeks ago, you didnt have complimentary words for Memphis Beat, but it seemed as if youd only seen the first episode. Since then, I think the both the stars and supporting casts characters have been developed and the show has become richer. If I remember correctly, another columnist didnt think Alfre Woddards considerable talents were being used well, but since the pilot, I think her character has turned out to not be the stereotype he thought but a supporter of the policemen under her command and an intriguing character in her own right. Jason Lee isgreat as the lead, and the supporting cast is varied and interesting. The city of Memphis is itself one of the interesting characters. My best friend now wants to make a trip there. If you havent yet, please give it another chance I think youll be glad you did. Marie

Matt Roush: When I made my last comments on the show, I had seen maybe three or four episodes, enough for me to feel pretty confident about my lukewarm opinion. Upon getting your e-mail nudge, I decided to watch last weeks season finale, and while the story itself was better than some of the episodes I had watched earlier on, I still wasnt impressed or convinced by the characters or the tone. I like Jason Lee a great deal, but dont find him compelling at all in this show, and find Alfre Woodards performance so weirdly mannered as to verge on the unwatchable. The rest of the cast seems to disappear into the woodwork. This is just one of those cases where well have to agree to disagree. For me, and this goes for many of TNTs summer shows, Memphis is one of those one-shows-too-many in an overcrowded field of formula TV. Im glad those who liked it liked it, but for whatever reason, it just never caught my fancy. The Memphis-style music on the soundtrack is the most appealing thing about this one, and even that strikes me as clichd. On Tuesdays this summer, I was more a USA Network fan White Collar, Covert Affairs and Syfy guy Warehouse 13, but the variety of options on the night this summer was pretty impressive, which is the positive takeaway in all of this.

Question: Im really liking this season of Mad Men, even though other people havent quite warmed up to it. The main reason being the transformation of Peggy. Gone is the mousy, unsure little girl and replaced with an adventurous and more confident young woman. I loved her foray into the downtown scene, as she jokingly flitted off advances from another woman and enjoyed the rush of running from the cops. I cracked up as she peered over the wall into Dons office All of this was capped off by the bittersweet exchange between her and Pete, as she went off with her boho friends and he met with corporate honchos. She seems to have found herself, or at least exploring more about herself. Can you believe shes the same person that began in this show, the one character a lot of people had a hard time relating to? Aaron

Matt Roush: And it sounds like this weeks episode which I may not see for a day or two, thanks to the Emmys was another strong one for Elisabeth Moss. I agree any time the show turns its attention to Peggy, we all benefit. She was especially fun in her flirtation with the bohemian underground, and I hope we see more of her getting out in the changing world. If she didnt win the Emmy for supporting actress last night, this season is shaping up to be a potentially championship year for her.

Question: Have really enjoyed Army Wives from the beginning. Will there be a season 5? The spin-off cop show is just not the same for me. Already lots of those kind of shows on now. Virginia

Matt Roush: As of last week, according to my sources, Lifetime hadnt officially renewed Army Wives. And the spin-off is still being considered a pilot in development, with no solid green light. Which doesnt mean we wont see both next year but Im with you about the show spinning off into yet another crime drama. Do we really need it?

Question: Last year, I wrote to say that I thought it was stubborn and misguided of AMC to run an original episode of Mad Men opposite the Emmy telecast where it was sure to win Best Drama, which it did. Once again, the network is making the same scheduling error, forcing a choice between watching the awards and the show. Ironically, "Guy Walks Into an Advertising Agency," the episode that aired on Emmy night last year, is actually up for a writing Emmy this year. My question now is: Do they actually have ratings data which demonstrates that the presence of the telecast does not affect the viewership of the episode? Fans could watch during one of its late-night reruns 11 pm, if the Emmys dont run over, or 2 am, but that seems like a long time to stay awake, and not everyone in the world has a dual-tuner DVR to take care of the timeslot conflict. Not to mention that Rubicon is new, too, and at its glacial pace, it should do everything in its power to keep the viewers it already has, instead of losing them to an awards show. So why does AMC hide behind the idea of wanting to do an uninterrupted run when a single weeks pre-emption or repeat would actually be a wise idea? Jake

Matt Roush: Its a fair complaint, but given that this is cable were talking about, there are several more chances during the week never as convenient as the regular time period, to be sure to catch these shows before the next original episode. Its even less of an issue if you have an On Demand option with your cable provider, as I thankfully do. This year the situation is exacerbated by the early timetable for the Emmys, airing the weekend before Labor Day, which is another good excuse for many shows including True Blood to take a week off. AMC appears to be airing original episodes of these shows that weekend too, which is traditionally a tough time to get viewers to the set on a holiday Sunday. Which tells me that AMC really isnt that obsessed with the ratings race where these shows are concerned. Theyre happy to get a number, but even more committed to running the shows straight through in regular pattern, figuring the majority of followers will either record the show, watch it during another scheduled run, or catch it On Demand. But why single out Mad Men here? HBO ran an original True Blood opposite the Emmys, and Lifetime presented its back-to-back season finale of Drop Dead Diva the same night, along with many other cable options. The Emmys arent the ratings juggernaut the Oscars are, especially this time of year, and the fact many competitors chose not to go dark bears that out.
