Charlie Sheen fired; studio fears life in danger

LOS ANGELES | Mon Mar 7, 2011 7:41pm EST

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actor Charlie Sheen was fired on Monday from his top-rated comedy "Two and A Half Men" because of his "dangerously self-destructive conduct," difficulty at work and inflammatory comments to producers, TV executives said.

"After careful consideration, Warner Bros. Television has terminated Charlie Sheen's services on 'Two and a Half Men' effective immediately," program makers Warner Bros. Television said in a statement.

Sheen, 45, is the highest-paid actor on U.S. television and "Two and A Half Men" is the most popular comedy for CBS.

But the remainder of the current season was canceled 10 days ago after Sheen called producer and co-creator Chuck Lorre a "clown" and a "stupid, stupid little man."

The actor followed up with a week of rambling, sometimes manic, TV and radio interviews boasting that he is "winning" and has "tiger blood", while insisting he is drug-free and sober after a period of rehabilitation in January.

Sheen, who had a contract through May 2012, shrugged off Monday's firing with a mixture of nonchalance and jibes.

"It is a big day of gladness at the Sober Valley Lodge because now I can take all of the bazillions, never have to look at whatshiscock again and I never have to put on those silly shirts for as long as this warlock exists in the terrestrial dimension," Sheen said in a statement. His lawyers said they planned to sue Warner Bros. Television.

A spokesman for Warner Bros. Television said no decision had been made about the future of "Two and A Half Men." The comedy, in which Sheen plays a womanizing bachelor, is a huge generator of advertising revenue for CBS and makes millions in syndication rights for Warner Bros. Television.

Warner Bros. and CBS could decide to bring it back for another season, without Sheen.

"DANGEROUSLY SELF-DESTRUCTIVE"

In an 11-page letter, attorneys for Warner Bros. said Sheen was being fired because in recent months he had been forgetting lines, turning up late or missing rehearsals and made "comments poisoning key working relationships."

TV executives believed Sheen's drug and alcohol abuse was also "endangering his life". Despite repeated attempts, including a personal appeal in January by CBS chief executive Les Moonves, Sheen refused to enter a rehab facility for treatment, the letter said.

"Let us state the obvious," began the letter, obtained by TMZ.com. "Your client (Sheen) has been engaged in dangerously self-destructive conduct and appears to be very ill."

Sheen's long-time publicist quit a week ago and Sheen's fellow cast and crew have been largely silent in the face of his bizarre tirades.

But the actor has found a huge popular following. He has attracted a record 2 million-plus Twitter followers in less than a week, and he hosted a live webcast on Saturday that attracted more than 100,000 viewers.

Sarah Palin and Kathy Griffin trade jabs over TV

LOS ANGELES | Mon Mar 7, 2011 7:33pm EST

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The public clash between conservative political superstar Sarah Palin and self-described "D-List" comedian Kathy Griffin gained momentum in recent days, with each taking verbal jabs at the other.

After Palin, a former Alaska governor and one-time Republican vice presidential candidate, called Griffin a "bully" over the weekend, the comedian's publicist made a dig at Palin by highlighting her starring role on last year's TV show "Sarah Palin's Alaska," rather than her political resume.

"As a fellow reality star, Kathy would like to extend free tickets to her upcoming Broadway show to reality star Sarah Palin and her reality TV crew," the publicist told ABC News in an article posted online on Monday.

"Kathy supports all reality stars regardless of what they say about her," the spokeswoman said.

Griffin's reality show airs on cable TV network Bravo and is called "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List," a joke about her life on the fringes of fame.

Griffin's publicist did not return calls about Palin.

The feud between the two women goes back months.

Aside from joking about Palin, Griffin has also made fun of the 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate's daughter Bristol, 20, for gaining weight on TV show "Dancing with the Stars," and she slammed Palin's other daughter Willow, 16, for anti-gay slurs the teen made on the website Facebook.

The feud picked up again this past Saturday when Palin, a politician-turned-pundit, appeared on Fox News and, in response to an anchor's question, blasted Griffin.

"She's a 50 year-old, adult bully, really, is what she is, kind of a has been comedienne, and she can (make jokes about) me, I would just ask for respect to my children," Palin said.

Palin has broadly hinted she could run for president in 2012. Her feud with Griffin gives no sign of letting up, because the comedian is slated to appear on the hit Fox musical comedy show "Glee," as a Palin-like Tea Party character.

Charlie Sheen reaches two million Twitter followers

Mon Mar 7, 2011 1:24pm EST

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Winning, indeed.

On Monday, Charlie Sheen reached two million followers on Twitter -- less than one week after launching his account.

"Another record shattered," the actor, 45, Tweeted Monday. "We gobbled the soft target that was 2.0 mil, like a bag of a troll-house zombie chow."

Later, he added, "hey Guinness, might wanna start writing them in pencil, checkit; you've been warned."

Last week, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Sheen will soon be Tweeting endorsements.

Lady Gaga currently has the most followers -- more than 8.6 million -- followed by Justin Bieber, Britney Spears and President Barack Obama.

Sheen is catching up, though.

Not only is he thriving on Twitter, he is heating up other parts of the web: On Saturday, he hosted a live webcast and attracted more than 100,000 viewers. He showed off a new tattoo on his left wrist that reads "winning."
