Cee Lo Green chooses "Voice" over "X Factor"

LOS ANGELES | Fri Apr 15, 2011 5:46pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Singer Cee Lo Green said on Friday he did not want to be a judge on upcoming new TV talent show "The X Factor" because he saw little fresh in the concept.

But the 36-year-old American soul and R&B singer of recent hit, "Forget You," said yes to a job as one of four celebrity coaches on rival new singing show "The Voice" because it felt fresh and positive, he told reporters.

"I knew the name and I knew the parties involved," Green said of "X Factor" the new U.S. venture by former "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell, which comes to Fox television in the fall of 2011.

"But as an enterprise, I didn't see what made it distinctive enough. It kind of seemed like shows like 'Idol' had run their course.

"And I liked this one better," Green said of "The Voice".

Green joins Christina Aguilera, country star Blake Shelton, and Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine as the mentor-judges on "The Voice, which comes to NBC on April 26.

It is the latest in a string of TV singing contests in a crowded market dominated by the Fox network's 10 year-old "American Idol" -- the most-watched show in the United States.

Cowell has yet to complete his much-discussed lineup of judges for "X Factor" but has said he and record producer Antonio "L.A." Reid will be part of the panel.

"The Voice" brings a twist to the genre by having the judges turn their backs on contestant in order to judge only their voices. The four then vie with each other to persuade talented contestants to adopt one of them as a coach for later rounds.

Green described the show as "a great, fresh idea and something very productive and proactive."

In an apparent reference to "American Idol", executive producer of "The Voice" Mark Burnett said his show would feature none of the hopeless wannabes seen on other talent shows.

"Other shows have made great television of the comedy of allowing people to sing, who clearly can't sing. We made a conscious choice to not do that at all. Not one person who stepped on that ("Voice") stage was not good. You will not be seeing people step up for a joke," Burnett said.

"The Voice" will also occasionally see the celebrity coaches performing on the show. Producers played a clip for TV reporters showing Aguilera, Green, Levine and Shelton performing a rousing cover version of the 2006 Gnarls Barkley hit song "Crazy".

Animated "Rio" eyeing weekend win, "Scream 4" strong

Fri Apr 15, 2011 5:00pm EDT

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - After a hiatus that lasted more than a decade, Dimension Films' hugely successful "Scream" franchise is back and looking good.

Opening alongside "Scream 4" on Friday is Fox's 3D toon "Rio," while Robert Redford's period courtroom drama "The Conspirator," distributed by Roadside Attractions, bows in a more limited run.

Tracking suggests "Rio" will win the weekend, although Fox cautions that Universal holdover "Hop" could take a bite out of its grosses. Fox expects "Rio," opening in 3,826 runs, to earn near $30 million in its opening weekend, while tracking suggests it will do more.

"Rio" also is poised to do strong midweek business next week, with kids being out of school for spring break. Last weekend, the toon stormed the international box office, grossing $55 million, the best opening of any film this year, anywhere.

"Scream 4," from Bob Weinstein's Dimension, is sparking strong interest among old and new fans and should gross in the mid-$20 million range, if tracking services are correct. The film heads out in 3,305 locations.

Wes Craven, who directed the first three films in the "Scream" franchise, returns to direct the fourth installment. Stars David Arquette, Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox return, while joining the series as a way to draw younger moviegoers are Emma Roberts and Hayden Panettiere. There's been a heavy public relations blitz for the film, with cast members making key television appearances.

If it performs as expected, "Scream 4" will mark another victory for Bob and Harvey Weinstein's revitalized Weinstein Co.

Likewise, a solid performance by "The Conspirator" starring Robin Wright and James McAvoy would continue Roadside's winning run following indie hit "Winter's Bone" and "Biutiful." "Conspirator" opens in only 706 locations, looking to get adults.

"Conspirator," about the only woman charged as part of the plot to assassinate Abraham Lincoln, was financed and produced by Joe Ricketts, founder of Ameritrade and owner of the Chicago Cubs. Roadside acquired the domestic rights to the film at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival.

Redford has been heavily promoting his film, appearing on numerous television news and talk shows, including "Piers Morgan Tonight" on CNN. An opening of $4 million would be considered a good start for "Conspirator," which could land it in the top 10.

Roadside hosted the premiere of the film last weekend at the Ford's Theater in Washington, the infamous site of Lincoln's murder. Numerous politicians and Obama administration officials attended.

Among holdovers, Focus Features' "Hanna," directed by Joe Wright, should stay high on the top 10 domestic box office chart. The action film came in No. 2 last weekend after "Hop" and retained its position during the week.

Paris Hilton ready to show real self in new TV show

LOS ANGELES | Fri Apr 15, 2011 2:37pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - You've seen her on the red carpet, famously walking out of jail, and working on a farm in "The Simple Life".

But now Paris Hilton says she is showing a side of herself on television that fans have never seen before -- the down to earth, funny, relatable girl who nevertheless has a multimillion business based on being famous for being famous.

"On 'The Simple Life', I was playing a character. Now people will get to see my real world, my friends, my house, my business," Hilton said on Friday.

"I would never have done a show like this five, ten years ago. I wasn't really comfortable with myself. I have been through so much. I have nothing to hide. It's like, what else can happen? I was ready to show myself," she told TV journalists.

"The World According to Paris" debuts on the U.S. cable channel Oxygen in June, and follows Hilton, her mother Kathy Hilton, and friends including Brooke Mueller, the third ex-wife of actor Charlie Sheen.

Hilton, 30, the great-granddaughter of Hilton hotels founder Conrad Hilton, has rarely been out of the headlines in the last 10 years.

She got her hands dirty with friend Nicole Richie in "The Simple Life" from 2003-2007, and searched for a best friend in a 2008 reality TV series. In 2007, she famously spent three weeks in a Los Angeles jail for violating her probation on a reckless driving conviction, and last year she was convicted of cocaine possession in Las Vegas.

In between, she launched international lines of fashion, hair, fragrance and shoes that she either helps design or endorses.

Executive producer Arthur Smith said the new TV show was "an all access look at Paris."

"There has been so much written about Paris over the years. This was a great opportunity to get to know the real Paris," he said.

Smith said his view of Hilton had completely changed from his preconceptions before starting work on the series.

"She really is so down to earth. She goes through things that every woman goes through -- so many relatable things. She is also really funny and likes to have a good time," Smith said.

Oprah Winfrey's cable network to travel overseas

NEW YORK | Fri Apr 15, 2011 2:11pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Three months after Oprah Winfrey's cable television channel premiered in the United States, preparations are underway to introduce the network to international audiences.

Executives from Discovery Communications Inc, a co-owner of the network, said early discussions have been held with distributors in foreign markets, adding that they expected talks to turn more serious later in the year.

"We're confident there are markets it will do well in," Mark Hollinger, who heads up Discovery's international business, said at a presentation on Friday. "We're confident there will be an international launch of the channel."

Hollinger declined to identify countries in the expansion plan. Other than the United States, the Oprah Winfrey Network can currently be seen only in Canada.

"We've said, 'Let's focus on the U.S. for now; we'll tend to this a little later this year,'" Hollinger said.

A joint venture between Discovery and Oprah Winfrey's production company, OWN launched in the United States early this year as a largely female-oriented network with a combination of lifestyle, advice and uplifting shows. Ratings have been mixed so far.

But Winfrey, regarded as the most influential woman on U.S. television, is expected to devote more energy to OWN in the coming months after the last original episode of her popular syndicated TV show, "The Oprah Winfrey Show," airs on May 25.

Discovery's international plans for OWN are part of its increasing effort to build up its business abroad. Chief Executive David Zaslav spends up to 40 percent his time outside the United States, he said, visiting markets such as Chile, Romania, Russia and India.

His efforts are shifting the financial balance of Discovery. Five years ago, only 10 percent of its business came from overseas markets. Today, around one-third of its does.

Given the rapid subscriber growth in developing markets, Zaslav said he would not be surprised if the company reached a "tipping point" in several more years that would make the international business bigger than the domestic.

"These are markets that feel like the U.S. 10 years ago," he said, a period he described as a "perfect storm" for the business when audience ratings, subscriber numbers, and spending on cable advertising were booming.

An added advantage for Discovery is that many of its adventure and science shows seem tailor-made for international audiences, since they usually avoid inside jokes or cultural references that can make comedies or dramas tricky to export.

The result is that much of Discovery's budget -- it now spends $1 billion a year on content -- can be used for shows that play both in the United States and abroad. By contrast, said Hollinger, other media companies operating abroad "have to produce all of their content on a local level or acquire it."

An area Discovery is approaching more cautiously is 3-D. While it has launched a full-time 3-D U.S. TV network, it has no current plans to follow suit overseas, executives said.

"Right now, it may be that in a lot of markets a full channel is not the route to take," said Hollinger, adding that video-on-demand 3-D would be more likely.

Disgraced Galliano fired from own fashion label: report

PARIS | Fri Apr 15, 2011 1:02pm EDT

PARIS (Reuters) - Scandal-tainted designer John Galliano has been fired from his own fashion label just weeks after an anti-Semitic outburst cost him his top job at Dior, Women's Wear Daily (WWD) reported on Friday.

The British designer was ousted from the "John Galliano" fashion label, which is 92-percent-owned by Dior, six weeks after a video surfaced of him hurling anti-Semitic insults at a couple in a Paris bar, the fashion trade journal reported.

The label's board decided to hand over his responsibilities to an in-house design team, WWD said citing sources, without specifying whether the label would retain the same name.

A spokesman for the brand would not confirm or deny the report but said: "Do you think a newspaper as serious as WWD would not check its facts before publishing them?."

Galliano, who was fired from Dior after a video clip circulated online showing him telling fellow drinkers in a bar that he loved Hitler, has reportedly been receiving treatment in Los Angeles for substance abuse problems.

Dior, one of the biggest brands within luxury giant LVMH, has yet to announce who will succeed him at the head of its creative operation. Chief Executive Sidney Toledano told Reuters it was in no hurry to announce a name.

Murdoch hacking scandal set to drag into next year

Fri Apr 15, 2011 11:39am EDT

* Judge to decide on how to manage claims

* Scandal casts shadow over News Corp pay-TV deal

* Judge says first test cases could be heard end of 2011

By Georgina Prodhan

LONDON (Reuters) - A public apology from Rupert Murdoch's UK newspaper arm, designed to contain an escalating phone-hacking scandal, looked to have failed after a judge said civil cases against the firm could run into next year at least.

At a case-management conference called to decide how best to manage a potential flood of lawsuits, the presiding judge on Friday proposed testing four lead cases, including that of actress Sienna Miller, and said they could be ready around the end of the year.

So far, 24 public figures who believe their voicemail messages were intercepted by journalists at the popular News of the World tabloid are suing News International, the UK newspaper arm of News Corp.

Many more are expected to come forward after News International apologized to eight victims last week and said it would set up a compensation scheme.

Last week News Corp deputy chief operating officer James Murdoch, the son of the company patriarch, said the company had managed to "put this problem into a box" but Judge Geoffrey Vos made clear that was not the case.

"The show ain't over. That's pretty obvious," Vos told a packed London courtroom.

An investigation into newsgathering practices at the News of the World has so far touched celebrities and politicians up to British Prime Minister David Cameron and repeatedly made headline news in rival publications.

It has clouded a planned deal by parent company News Corp

for a $14 billion buyout of British pay-TV group BSkyB, with critics saying the government should put it on hold until the hacking investigation is over.

Vos proposed trying as test cases those brought by Miller, sports agent Skylet Andrew, ex-sports pundit Andy Gray and interior designer Kelly Hoppen because they encompassed a wide range of issues and were closest to being ready for trial.

"It's hard to imagine there would be generic questions that would not be raised by those cases," Vos said. He said they could be ready for trial by the end of the year or early next.

Police are also carrying out a criminal investigation. They have arrested three senior News of the World journalists so far this year, including one on Thursday.
