Underwood, Paisley to host CMA Awards Nov. 10 omg

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Carrie Underwoods wedding was one of the most special days of her life, but it will likely become fodder for jokes when she and Brad Paisley host the Country Music Association Awards for the third year in a row.

The two will anchor the Nov. 10 ceremony in Nashville, and Paisley said of Underwoods July union with NHL player Mike Fisher: "We have to bring it up."

"It was big news in country music, so if it is that, it is fair game, as well as Nashville or current events," he said in an interview with Underwood on Thursday. "Its worth talking about anything like that that people will relate to."

The two joked about Paisleys wedding gift to Underwood, a bowl, which Paisley said his wife picked out.

"Is it something you wanted or its in the pile of re-gift items?" asked Paisley.

"Youre going to get it back three Christmases from now," said Underwood.

"I cant wait to get that back," said Paisley.

They also talked about Underwoods wardrobe. She is known to switch up her outfits multiple times throughout the show, changing more than 10 times last year.

"I cant change anymore than I did last year," said Underwood. "I dont think thats a physical possibility, so Im not going to try to outdo the costumes."

So maybe its Paisleys turn to change his outfits this year?

"I think that would be awesome," said Underwood. "Im going to stay in the same thing all night. Im going to show up in my pajamas, and youre going to do your thing."

As for hosting together, the two have a natural timing and chemistry together that comes across on stage and in-person.

"I do feel like we do have our own roles that we fall into and compliment each other," said Underwood.

"At this point three years later, we have each other pretty well figured out, so I think it will go really smooth," said Paisley.

The CMA Awards air live on ABC from Bridgestone Arena.

Eminem says shows with Jay-Z wont be a competition

Fri Aug 27, 2010 11:51pm EDT

DETROIT Billboard - Less than a week before the start of his Home and Home tour with Jay-Z, Eminem is tight-lipped about his plans for the stadium shows, which commence September 2 for two dates at Detroits Comerica Park and move to New Yorks Yankee Stadium for shows September 13 and 14.

"I dont want to give anything away," Eminem told Billboard.com. He does, however, allow that his song selection "will probably be all over the place" rather than concentrating on his latest album, "Recovery," which has achieved double-platinum sales and spent seven nonconsecutive weeks atop the Billboard 200. "Hopefully itll be songs that everyone is familiar with."

The hip-hop star -- who will be performing with a nine-piece band that includes Denaun Porter of D12, DJ Alchemist and "Lose Yourself" co-writer Luis Resto on keyboards -- added that he "wont even allude to" possible guest appearances at the show. Rumors have revolved around everyone from Rihanna, his duet partner on the current Hot 100 No. 1 "Love the Way You Lie," to Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and Drake. Nor would he say if he and Jay-Z plan to perform together, although he promised that there wont be a battle attitude between them.

"Nah, I dont think itll be anything like a competition," Eminem said. "For the most part me and Jay just want people to come out and have a good time. We want them to enjoy the music."

Eminem is also slated to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 12 in Los Angeles and has a concert lined up for the Epicenter Festival on September 25 in Fontana, Calif. Plans for other shows or a tour, however, remain up in the air. "I havent really planned too far ahead," he said, "so well see."

It has been determined, however, that the next single from "Recovery" will be "No Love," a collaboration with Lil Wayne. "I did a song with Wayne called Drop the World for his Rebirth album," Eminem notes, "and we had just agreed to do an even swap, so I wanted him on my album. I kind of waited, and when Just Blaze had finished that beat we jumped on it."

Eight years after his star turn in the film "8 Mile," Eminem said he would "definitely like to get back into" acting. Producers of the new ABC police drama "Detroit 1-8-7" have made public overtures toward him, but there are no commitments yet.

"As busy as I am with the music and recording albums and things like that, Ive kind of taken an obviously long break" from acting, he said. "If theres a role, something that actually hits me that I feel like, Yo, Ive got to do this, this is crazy, then Ill do it. But I havent had any scripts or anything sent my way that feel like that yet."

Eminem, Porter and Alchemist were judges for the final round of the Red Bull EmSee: The Road to 8 Mile national rap competition, held Thursday night at Detroits St. Andrews Hall. The winner, an 18-year-old Detroit MC named FowL, gets the chance to record at Red Bull Studios in Santa Monica, Calif., with "a headlining producer" who has not yet been named.

Pretty fragrant: Sex Pistols unveil punk perfume omg

LONDON/PARIS Billboard - The Sex Pistols latest attempt to get up peoples noses comes in the form of their own branded perfume.

Fragrance launches from music stars like Britney Spears, Sean "Diddy" Combs and Avril Lavigne have become commonplace, but its still an eyebrow-raising move from the legendary punk band, which has been known for making cash from chaos, not from cologne.

The unisex scent, which comes in a tartan-topped bottle featuring the bands "God Save the Queen" imagery, is a collaboration with Paris-based perfume brand Etat Libre dOrange, which licensed the Sex Pistols name from the bands merchandising partner, Live Nation Merchandise.

Etat Libre launched the perfume in France in mid-July through an exclusive deal with the Sephora chain of beauty shops, which has 150-plus stores across France. It retails for 40 euros $51. The scent is expected to launch in the United States September 10, initially in the Henri Bendel store in New York.

Etat Libre CEO Etienne de Swardt says the company also hopes to launch a "Never Mind the Bollocks"-branded soap by years end and a second Pistols-themed perfume in 2011, subject to the bands agreement.

The group declined requests for comment. But Michael Krassner, executive vice president of worldwide retail and licensing for Live Nation Merchandise, says frontman Johnny Rotten aka John Lydon and other band members are "closely involved" with all licensing decisions.

"They know who they are better than we do," Krassner says. "Thats difficult for us in some respects, as opposed to someone who just approves everything."

Krassner says Pistols-branded merchandise has proved to be a consistent seller, despite lingering resistance from some retailers over the bands name. He cites its January 2010 partnership with skate-wear brand Vans on a Pistols-branded range of shoes, shirts and denim as helping the band reach a younger demographic.

BUT WAIT, THERES MORE

The perfume will be far from the only quirky Pistols product on the market. Officially licensed alarm clocks, refrigerator magnets and removable laptop skins are already available, as is virtual Pistols merchandise for characters in the computer game "The Sims."

Many Pistols-branded products are produced by Bath, England-based Half Moon Bay, which says its top-selling Pistols item is a "Never Mind the Bollocks" coffee mug. "The fans are older now and might be less inclined to wear their heart on a sleeve with a T-shirt," Half Moon Bay entertainment brand product manager Rachel Carpenter says.

Krassner says opening up new merchandise revenue streams has become particularly important for heritage acts, as income from recorded-music sales continues to shrink. The Sex Pistols have sold 1.2 million albums in the United States since 1991, according to Nielsen SoundScan, but theyve moved just 13,000 albums year to date, compared with 27,000 in full-year 2009 and 35,000 in full-year 2008 when the band last re-formed for live shows.

Meanwhile, Rotten has proved to be a surprisingly marketable commodity for a man who was once the scourge of proper British society. Butter brand Country Life credited the punk rocker with driving an 85 percent increase in sales in fourth-quarter 2008 when he first appeared in TV spots for the product.

Still, the perfume launch could have a "negative impact on the Pistols cultural currency," says Snowy Hanbury, joint head of planning at advertising/creative agency Anomaly London, which worked on the recent deal between British band Kasabian and sports brand Umbro for the World Cup.

"The Sex Pistols brand has no tenable association to fragrance," Hanbury says. "As with any brand or celebrity partnership, its all about relevance and understanding your audience -- I cannot see who the audience is here."

But Half Moon Bays Carpenter denies that the growing list of Pistols paraphernalia risks creating a stink with the bands fan base.

"Bands are a commercial venture, and licensing is just another extension of that," she says. "With the Sex Pistols, theyre doing TV commercials for butter, so I dont really think a mug is selling out."

Leonardo DiCaprio "wife" must stay away

LOS ANGELES | Fri Aug 27, 2010 4:34pm EDT

LOS ANGELES Reuters - Leonardo DiCaprio has been granted a restraining order against a woman who believes she is his wife and is carrying his child -- called Jesus.

The "Titanic" and "Inception" star said in documents filed with Los Angeles Superior Court this week that he was frightened of the "delusional" woman and felt his personal safety was in jeopardy.

His lawyer submitted a number of hand-written letters from the woman, named as Livia Bistriceanu, to DiCaprio.

"Do you want to be with me for real and to be the father of Jesus? Ive explained you I cant be with nobody virtually. I have to have a father in reality for Jesus not like this," read one of the letters, obtained by celebrity website TMZ.com on Friday.

The court ordered Bistriceanu to stay at least 100 yards away from DiCaprio, 35, who remains one of Hollywoods leading heart-throb stars actors despite attempts to move away from romantic dramas in film since the success of "Titanic" in 1997.

The restraining order was granted the same week that another woman was ordered to stand trial in Los Angeles on charges of striking DiCaprio with a wine glass at a private Hollywood party in 2005, and injuring his face and neck.

DiCaprio needed several stitches after the incident.

Aretha Wilson, 40, who was extradited from Canada to face the charge, could face up to seven years in prison if convicted at trial.

DiCaprio, whose next movie project is taking on the role of former FBI director J. Edgar Hoover for director Clint Eastwood, was not in court for either of the hearings.

Michael Jackson kids start school for first time

LOS ANGELES | Fri Aug 27, 2010 4:11pm EDT

LOS ANGELES Reuters - Two of Michael Jacksons children have begun attending school for the first time after years of getting lessons at home from private tutors, celebrity website TMZ.com said on Friday.

Prince Michael, 13, and Paris Jackson, 12, had their first day on Wednesday at an exclusive private school in Los Angeles whose former students include the likes of Paris Hilton, former "Friends" actor Matthew Perry and singer Natalie Cole, TMZ reported, citing unidentified sources.

Jacksons youngest son, the eight-year-old known as Blanket, will continue to be home-schooled for the time being.

The singers mother Katherine, who has custody of her three grand-children, said in a June interview that she planned to send the once-sheltered children to school this fall. The impetus is said to have come from Prince, who wanted a more social experience growing up.

Jackson, who died suddenly in June 2009, had kept his children secluded from outsiders, often having them wear veils when out in public.

Fees for The Buckley School in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles range from $25,000 to $29,000 a year, according to the schools website.

Mark Thompson says "many different arguments will be made" regarding the future of the licence fee

<-- END - caption -->
<-- end of the embedded player component --> <-- Player embedded -->

Next years licence fee negotiations will be a "moment of realism" for the BBC, director general Mark Thompson has warned.

But, he said, any loss of funding would permanently damage the UKs capacity to create television programmes.

In his MacTaggart speech delivered in Edinburgh, Mr Thompson also said that Sky should invest more in homegrown TV, which would be "good for the public".

Last years speech saw Sky boss James Murdoch identify the BBC as a threat.

Leaner BBC

Mr Murdoch said the scale of the corporations ambition was "chilling" and railed against the BBCs "guaranteed and growing" income.

Mr Thompson responded to these criticisms, saying Sky was on its way to becoming "the most dominant force in broadcast media in this country".

He suggested that the broadcaster was not doing enough to produce its own original content.

"Its time that Sky pulled its weight... its investment in original British content is just not enough," he told an audience at the Edinburgh International Television Festival.

Mr Thompson added that going head-to-head in this area would also be "good for the BBC and good for the industry," and make up a potential shortfall in the UKs programme-making capacity.

ITV and Channel 4, he said, would need to remain strong to contribute to making "great British television".

"The total pot of money available to invest in original TV production is shrinking, and unless something changes, may shrink further."

He emphasised that the UKs broadcasters would have to "break the habit of a lifetime and actually work together".

The BBC boss acknowledged that the corporation was facing a tough challenge over negotiations for the licence fee, which begin in around a years time.

"For the BBC I believe this will be a moment of realism and a recognition of the scale of the challenge facing licence fee payers and the country as a whole."

Arguing that "a pound out of the commissioning budget of the BBC is a pound out of UK creative economy," Mr Thompson said it was unlikely that cuts to the BBCs funding "could be magically made up from somewhere else".

The director general also said that making the licence fee work meant the BBC would "have to become leaner than its ever been before".

The BBC remained committed to reducing the management bill, he continued, promising "simpler structures, fewer layers, fewer management boards".

He added that such reductions would enable the BBC to invest more in its core strength - making original programmes.

Mr Thompson said that "radical and rapid" change would be necessary at the corporation in the coming years.

A BBC should be "fit and ready for this new world" and "do all it can to help the whole industry thrive," he concluded.

Eddie Redmayne Wraps Up Pillars, Gets Ready To Dance For Kathryn Bigelow omg

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- British actor Eddie Redmayne has spent the summer on the small screen, going from an almost-mute young cave dweller to community-saving sculptor in Starzs epic miniseries "Pillars of the Earth," which wraps up Friday night on the cable network.

Although the Londoner has a diverse body of work behind him, his character Jack in "Pillars" has something in common with several of his previous gigs, including his part-Native American Gordy in 2010s "The Yellow Handkerchief" opposite Kristen Stewart, and as Ken, Mark Rothkos assistant in Broadways "Red" with Alfred Molina. They all had a penchant for art.

VIEW THE PHOTOS: Hot Shots Of Brit Packer Eddie Redmayne

"You know what, its a good point," the actor said laughing at AccessHollywood.coms observation. "Its a hilarious thing: when I look back on the past few years of acting, I clearly have like, periods. That started with a sort of incestuous, sexually confused American stage Savage Grace with Julianne Moore, moved into [an] Elizabethan/Tudor period Elizabeth The Golden Age, with Cate Blanchett, and has now sort of come through this year into a medieval or quasi-damaged stage, so I dont know where the f*** we go from here."

It appears his next period in history will actually be the 20th century, as Eddie plays "a chorus boy," as he puts it, for HBOs "The Miraculous Year," a series on the way from playwright John Logan and Oscar winning director Kathryn Bigelow.

VIEW THE PHOTOS: Scenes & Stars From Pillars Of The Earth

"Its about this extraordinary, incredibly talented family, but whats hilarious is [they] offered me this part -- and I think its got a wonderful arc -- and when I accepted I was like, Damn Hell yeah Id love to be a part of that. And when I came to New York to start rehearsing, and even though I knew Id been cast as a chorus boy dancer, like a part of my brain hadnt connected the fact that I would have to actually dance," Eddie explained. "I mean, Ive never danced in my life, let alone tap danced."

Trying new things though is something the talented actor seems to enjoy. Earlier this year, he took on Broadways tough audiences in "Red," a play written by "Miraculous Year" writer John Logan. Thrilling the tough Broadway crowds led to the actor walking away with a Best Featured Actor Tony Award in June.

"Its in my flat in London... Ive got an apartment in London that I share with a couple of mates, and I have quite an amazing window with a view over the city of London in my bedroom and its sat there perching, overlooking the city of London," Eddie said of where he keeps his award, later adding, "If it were a person, it has got the greatest view in the world."

While Eddies steadily built his career filled with dramatic and impressively cerebral roles, he perks up when Access Hollywood asks if, like his "Pillars" co-star Hayley Atwell, who is currently filming "Captain America," hed have an interest in a big budget superhero film.

"Do you know what man? What I love about it, my work is the variety of it... I [loved] doing Red over here in New York and I started reheasing it while still filming Pillars actually, and that kind of absurd juxtaposition adds such color to the life of it," he replied. "So as far as like superheroes? My God, yeah When it comes to summer blockbusters, you know how all the studios are competing to get an audience for it? Im kind of their wet dream. I go and see every single blockbuster, no matter how shoddy it is, and I even get off on the trailers. So yeah, Id love to do something like that at some point, but equally I love my little independent edgy faire."

Snooki helps makes MTVs Viacom an investor darling

NEW YORK | Fri Aug 27, 2010 3:52pm EDT

NEW YORK Reuters - Viacoms Philippe Dauman, a cultured media chief who scored perfect results on his college entrance exam and entered Yale at 16, happens to be an ardent fan of sensational TV shows.

Name a hit from Viacoms MTV network -- whether "Jersey Shore," which stars a crew of hard-partying Italian-Americans, or "16 and Pregnant" featuring teen mothers -- he catches them all.

"I love our shows," Viacom Chief Executive Dauman said.

Its no surprise really. Once a corporate troublespot, MTV has been put through a programing overhaul over the last year, and has won back audiences and advertisers in the process. Ratings this summer are up about 20 percent from a year ago.

"A lot of people were writing it off," Dauman, 56, said in an interview. "They were wrong."

Indeed, stubbornly low ratings at MTV had proven a cause for concern, depressing results from a cable business that includes Comedy Central and Nickelodeon, among others. Viacom counts on cable for about two-thirds of its sales.

But last quarter revenue from Viacoms cable division rose 6 percent and the company is suddenly one of the hottest investments in the media industry.

Shares of Viacom are up around 5 percent year-to-date, besting peers Time Warner Inc, Walt Disney and News Corp. Viacoms stock far outperformed the Standard & Poors 500 Index, which has declined about 5 percent during the same period.

A number of analysts suggest that Viacoms shares, currently in the low $30 range, should ring up more gains. Analysts think the Viacoms stock is worth $52.24, according to Thomson Reuters StarMine estimates, north of its media counterparts.

"Viacoms revenue can continue to accelerate because of ratings improvements," said Richard Greenfield, an analyst with BTIG. "Advertisers follow eyeballs and if you want to reach young adult eyeballs, MTV is one of the best places on television to do it."

SNOOKI TO THE RESCUE

Viacoms Dauman said he planned to keep investing in the cable networks, saying budgets would be up in the middle single digits this year. Viacom also owns Paramount Pictures.

"Our philosophy as a pure content company is to continue to build our brand and invest in our programing through good times and bad," Dauman said.

The turnaround at MTV has been one key to improving its cable networks. MTVs ratings are on the upswing with three straight quarters of year-over-year growth.

"We had to do a wholesale reinvention of what the audience wanted from us," said MTV General Manager Stephen Friedman.

Friedman said that meant more "authentic" reality shows as well as stronger scripted programs, something the network had let slip. It also meant hiring David Janollari, who helped develop NBCs "Friends," to head up the effort.

So far, results are promising, particularly when it comes to drawing the young adults that are prized by advertisers.

One show on a tear is "Jersey Shore," the reality program that revolves around a cast of hard-partying housemates, including pop-culture favorite Snooki. Since its second season premiere on July 29, the show has been the top-rated cable and broadcast program for viewers 12-34 years old.

Higher ratings could not have happened at a more opportune time for Viacom, coinciding with a resurgence in advertising from automakers, packaged goods companies and movie studios.

Warner Brothers, AT&T Inc, and T-Mobile USA, a unit of Deutsche Telekom, are some of the top advertisers that have spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy time on "Jersey Shore" and "Teen Mom," according to Kantar media, which tracks advertising spending.

"Its a pretty powerful statement about the companys ability to start realizing some sustainable success," said RBC Capital Markets analyst David Bank.

"The bar is so low that even modest positives are going to make a big difference to this company long term," said Bank, who describes Viacom shares as "ridiculously" cheap.

Bank reasons that Viacom is undervalued compared to other media conglomerates and pure-play cable companies such as Discovery Communications. Viacom shares trade at 11.8 times 2010 estimated earnings versus the average of 15.3 times 2010 estimated earnings of its peers, according to RBC.

What is more, Viacom may have a bigger upside than its competitors when it comes to advertising sales. One reason is that Viacom is still living with commercial deals it struck before some of its hit shows took hold.

Some of those deals, signed during 2009s so-called upfront selling period, meant that Viacom couldnt get the highest rates for its breakout hits in 2010, explained Matthew Harrigan an analyst at Wunderlich Securities.

"Some of that was the perception that ratings were in long-term decline particularly with MTV," Harrigan said.

Still, some question whether MTV programing is too edgy for mainstream marketers. In one episode of "Jersey Shore," for instance, Snooki is punched in the face.

"For some advertisers that may be a little gritty," said Lyle Schwartz, a managing partner at WPPs Group M media agency.

Schwartz said the other issue is whether MTV can hold on to a demographic that can be fickle when it comes to TV viewing.

"Teens are very quick to latch on to really good stuff," he said. "But they are really quick to leave."

Judge grants restraining order sought by DiCaprio omg

LOS ANGELES - Leonardo DiCaprio has been granted a temporary restraining against a woman he said claims to be his wife and carrying his baby.

Court records show Superior Court Judge Carol Boas Goodson granted the order Wednesday against Livia Bistriceanu, 41, of Chicago.

"Given this obsessive and harassing behavior, I am frightened of Ms. Bistriceanu and feel that my personal safety, and the personal safety of those around me, is in jeopardy," DiCaprio wrote in a sworn declaration.

An e-mail message sent Friday to Bistriceanu seeking comment was not immediately returned.

DiCaprios request included statements from the actor and his security team claiming Bistriceanu had traveled from Chicago to Los Angeles at least twice to try to meet DiCaprio at his home and business office. She refused to leave the properties and acted aggressively, the court filings state.

The Academy Award-nominated actor wrote that she "has evidenced a willingness to make physical contact with me regardless of the consequences."

Bistriceanu has been placed on a psychological hold twice, according to the documents.

DiCaprio said he has never met Bistriceanu, but she has sent him numerous handwritten letters. Some were attached to his request for the restraining order and reviewed by the judge.

One letter included the greeting, "Dear husband Leo," and contained statements that Bistriceanu believed DiCaprio was the father of baby Jesus.

On Thursday, another woman was ordered to stand trial on a charge of slashing DiCaprios face with a piece of glass during a party in 2005.

Aretha Wilson pleaded not guilty to assault with a deadly weapon after being returned to Los Angeles from her native Canada.

DiCaprio suffered injuries to his face and neck.

How to get a plum spot on Emmys red carpet

Fri Aug 27, 2010 1:44am EDT

LOS ANGELES Hollywood Reporter - Its a cutthroat affair for the hundreds of media outlets battling to obtain one of 160 spots available on the Emmy red carpet. So who gets first choice?

Answer: "Access Hollywood," NBCs nationally syndicated entertainment show. Thats because it has a deal to produce the Emmy preshow and will therefore be stationed on the corner of the L-shaped carpet, with a view in each direction.

For the rest, its a joint decision made by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences marketing department and its PR firm, PMK-BNC.

"Outlets are placed with regard to deadline needs and whether they are going live or taping," says spokeswoman Joanna Cichoki. "With photo press, its where the light is best for fashion shots."

Between seven and nine platforms are also built on the red carpet itself and go to entertainment outlets like "Entertainment Tonight" and E Every other show or news publication is stuck behind the barricades, along the edge of the red carpet.

Those competitors in turn are positioned according to how big their viewership or circulation is, Cichoki says. Which means, just recently, the Armed Forces Radio Network got a prime spot, while Life & Style and In Touch magazines did far worse.

"I would spend an entire year covering any academy event, just so we would get a good position at the Emmy red carpet," freelance journalist Scott Huver recalls.

Not that an imperfect place stopped him from getting what he wanted: When he saw Brad Pitt accompanying nominee Jennifer Aniston, he took a lesson from the armed forces themselves and leaped over the barricade.

How did Brad handle it?

"Youre standing on my wifes dress," he pointed out, then answered Huvers questions. "I felt like a dork," Huver shrugs, "but I got my quotes."

TV A-listers wonder: Who would win on Survivor?

Fri Aug 27, 2010 1:41am EDT

LOS ANGELES Hollywood Reporter - When a car spun out of control, careening off Sunset Boulevard and narrowly missing several other vehicles, it almost crashed into Lea Michele -- just as the "Glee" star was on her way to the Chateau Marmont for a Hollywood Reporter roundtable this month.

Luckily, it missed Michele and she made it to the event, though somewhat shaken up. She was joined by six fellow Emmy nominees -- Rose Byrne "Damages", Mindy Kaling "The Office", Jeff Probst "Survivor", Eric Stonestreet "Modern Family", John Slattery "Mad Men" and Matthew Weiner "Mad Mens" creator and executive producer. They spoke about work, fame and how to survive in a jungle that isnt called Hollywood.

IN JEFFS HONOR, IF YOUR TV CHARACTERS WERE ON "SURVIVOR," WHO WOULD WIN?

John Slattery: Id jump out of a plane. Id last five minutes and have a heart attack.

Eric Stonestreet: Cameron would be nice to everybody and then stab them right in the back. Thats what it takes, right?

Jeff Probst: I think that Rose would be off early.

Rose Byrne: No way I would survive big time.

Probst: Youre smart, but youre not sociable enough.

Byrne: But do you have to be sociable? Dont you just have to avoid bugs and traps and stuff?

Probst: No, its a total social game. You pointing to Lea Michele would be there at the end.

Lea Michele: Thank you. I was going to say, I would totally win. To Mindy Kaling: We would claw each others eyes out.

Matthew Weiner: Her character is so duplicitous

Probst: Youd be at the end.

Weiner: Oh really?

Probst: Yeah. You wouldnt win. To Slattery: Youd be like, "This is bulls---. Ill kill myself." But my money is right here Lea.

HOW WOULD THE REAL-LIFE LEA MICHELE DO ON "SURVIVOR"?

Michele: Well, I used to have "Survivor" parties with tiki lamps, and Id wear a bandana around my head and everything. So I know all there is to know about the show.

DO YOU WATCH MUCH REALITY TELEVISION?

Weiner: I do. I love "Project Runway." I just love what it says about the creative experience. And I love "Survivor," obviously. Ive started watching it with my kids, actually. We have DVDs and it has blown their minds to see adults behaving that way. And I love "Top Chef."

Probst: Ive noticed lately, most of my favorite shows, drama-wise -- all the lead characters are bad. Theyre all completely, horribly flawed people. And endlessly fascinating. At the end of every season, youre going, "Where will they go next year?" Im really curious on "The Office," with Steve Carell leaving, to see what happens. Now you have this brand new opportunity to create something new.

Mindy Kaling: The joke now is that we want to rename the show "Whos the Boss?" Its the only thing anyone ever asks us about. But Ive always thought the show would be like "ER," where you could just have a revolving cast.

Weiner: Heres something true: We change the dynamics in our show. I dont know if anyone ever watches "Weeds," but Jenji Kohan, the executive producer has redone that show every year in an explosive way and theres something great about it. As the characters come closer together, you basically are resolving more and more conflicts, and at a certain point you have no conflict, you have no show. So it might be nice to have a new conflict in there.

BUT HOW MUCH DO VIEWERS WANT SHOWS TO CHANGE? "SURVIVOR" HAS THE SAME FORMAT.

Probst: On "Survivor," our goal is the same thing, only different. You know, on "The Sopranos," every week you turned in to see a new hit -- I dont want to see it on the same guy, but I want to see a hit. When I watch "Weeds," Im not looking for the main character to be a completely different woman. But I want to see her get into trouble. I want to see her have sex. All those qualities.

WHATS BEEN YOUR BEST AND WORST EXPERIENCE IN TV?

Weiner: On "Sopranos," I was a writer and not in charge of the show. Late one night, shooting a scene under a bridge a 77-year-old actor was in the trunk of a car with a piece of plastic over his face, and they were going to shoot him in the face with squibs and then slam the trunk door down on him. That was the worst experience. It was his last scene on the show, and Im sitting there thinking, "I wrote this in my living room and I really didnt think about that old man having to climb into the trunk of a car."

JOHN, WHAT INTERESTS YOU ABOUT MATT AS A PRODUCER?

Slattery: Ive actually had the opportunity to watch Matt in casting a couple of times. Recently, someone came in and -- we all know a bad audition is really awful. Youre sinking, and you got flop sweat and its a horrible experience. This fellow came in and he was nervous and it wasnt going well. And then Matt said, "Here, try it again," and gave him some specific direction. And he got better and better, and able to show how good he was -- and he got the job. It was unbelievable to watch this guy pull it back from the nosedive he was in. He was drenched with sweat.

Probst: To Weiner: Did you work with him out of just compassion or did you see something?

Weiner: I saw something. I fly by intuition. And honestly, I let everybody go twice. And I ask them where theyre from and I try to calm them down, because theyre scared.

Stonestreet: I auditioned for your show, the first year, for a little guest star part.

Weiner: Oh my God, right

Stonestreet: And you were really nice.

HOW DID THE CASTING ON "MODERN FAMILY" GO?

Stonestreet: They wouldnt see me in the beginning. And finally they saw me, and they said, "Great job, we like you, but its not going any further." And two weeks went by, and they called back and said, "Would you come in clean-shaven and more dressed the part?" I took that to mean lavender gingham, navy pants and a great cardigan. And I went back in -- and again they passed. And then they called three days later and said, "OK, were going to test you for the studio and network." All I ever wanted was an opportunity. And by the time I got to my driveway, literally 15 minutes after I left ABC, I had the part. When were given the opportunity to let loose and go, decisions can be made.

Weiner: But youre also revealing something about your positive attitude, because the fact is, there was a month of disappointment.

ROSE, IS THERE A ROLE YOU DIDNT GET THAT YOU WISH YOU HAD?

Byrne: Yes. All the time. I went for "Holy Smoke," that Jane Campion directed with Kate Winslet. That was something I would love to have done. Shes an incredible director and the role was fantastic, in India, and it was all about ashrams. That was a big disappointment. And I went for Anne Hathaways role in "Brokeback Mountain." That would have been really fun.

LEA, HOW DID "GLEE" COME ABOUT?

Michele: I was working on Broadway in New York and my co-star was working on a pilot with "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy up here in L.A. During a Broadway strike, I went to visit him, since neither of us was working. And I met Ryan. And we were here at the Chateau, about 2007, and just had a great night talking about Barbra Streisand and our shared love for her. And I never saw him ever again until I auditioned for "Glee." I came out here with the hopes of just taking a break from New York and the stage; I was always told I was too ethnic or not pretty enough or too much this or not enough of that. And "Glee" was the first audition I went on, and Ryan was there. And I was like, "Do you remember me?" And hes like, "Of course" After going through the studio and the network, he told me that he had written it with me in mind. And I had never gotten even a callback for a television show before.

Weiner: Now theyre all looking for a Lea Michele type

Probst: It is always a surprise. "Survivor" got turned down by every network, twice.

Weiner: I wrote "Mad Men" five years before we shot it. And I carried it around with me. And if I sat next to one of you on an airplane, I probably would have handed it to you. I got my job on "Sopranos" out of it. I wrote it for free, while I had another job, because I was very frustrated and I wanted to write the greatest TV show ever, in my mind.

Probst: Did that same pilot script get changed?

Weiner: I changed four lines. Actually, I added a couple of things like Don looking at his Purple Heart.

MINDY, YOU BOTH WRITE AND ACT. WHICH ONES EASIER?

Kaling: Writing, sometimes. I have a very specific thing that I can do. I mean, Im here because Im a writer. I think of myself as a writer who acts.

Weiner: Like Woody Allen.

Kaling: The hardest is writing a joke. Because you think of something funny when youre in Target or taking a shower, and then when youre sent off in a room -- you know, you have half an hour to come up with the jokes. You cant just turn it on like that.

Stonestreet: Ideas are a dime a dozen. But to put that into a concise sentence, setup, punch line ... Is it hard to write for yourself?

Kaling: Oh no, its wonderful. I love writing for myself.

YOUR WRITING SUGGESTS YOU HAVE A PRETTY VAST KNOWLEDGE OF TV. WHAT DID YOU WATCH GROWING UP?

Kaling: Well, I had the love of television of someone who was forbidden to watch it. And so I loved it. The worst, most pretentious thing someone can say to me is, "I dont have a television." And they say it so smugly

Byrne: We had a lot of American television growing up in Australia. I watched "Family Ties," those sort of sitcoms. And I loved "Neighbors," which is an Australian soap, which is very tragic to admit.

Stonestreet: I loved "Diffrent Strokes" and "The Brady Bunch." I loved "M*A*S*H," the series finale. I hadnt watched "M*A*S*H" as a series, but for whatever reason, I saw the series finale. And I came downstairs, bawling. Bawling. But I loved TV as a kid.

WHAT WAS THE MOMENT WHEN YOU KNEW, "I HAVE TO ACT"?

Stonestreet: You know, its interesting: On "Modern Family," theres an episode where Im a clown, and thats taken from my real life. When I was a kid, I just wanted to be a clown. I was 5. But I didnt know I wanted to be an actor until I was in college and did a play "Prelude to a Kiss" and people said I was good.

Slattery: I remember watching "Masterpiece Theater" and Derek Jacobi "I, Claudius". Just to see the power of that made me think, thats what I want to do. And I just wanted to get the hell out of where I was, the suburbs of Boston. There was no outlet. There was no acting. I came from an Irish-Catholic, sports-minded scene. And I was obsessed with movies and I would stay up all night watching movies. But there was no outlet.

DID ANY OF YOU THINK OF ANYTHING OTHER THAN ACTING OR WRITING?

Stonestreet: I grew up around prisons. My degree is in sociology, with an emphasis in criminal justice. I was going to school to be an administrator in a penitentiary. My career path was that I wanted to be a warden at a level-five penitentiary. Theres a federal facility in Leavenworth where Stonestreet grew up thats literally called the Hot House, and thats a level-five penitentiary. And then theres the disciplinary barracks in Leavenworth, which is where you go if you commit a crime in the military. That was the tapestry of my upbringing.

Probst: For me it was "Twilight Zone" that really got me locked into storytelling. I would make little super-8mm movies. I would basically rip off the episodes and try to re-create them. And when I got hired by Mark Burnett, he said, "I want a storyteller."

Michele: Ive never wanted to be anything other than an actor. I started performing on Broadway when I was 8 years old. My first night on stage, I told my mom, "This is what I want to do." It was "Les Mes." I mean, I was always a very out-there kid. I would watch "Saturday Night Live" and I would pretend to be the characters. Then I would put on "West Side Story" and act out Marias entire final scene at 7 years old. My mother would say, "I dont know who you are." But I was always very realistic: the sad thing about this business is its so fleeting. If I couldnt do that, I was going to go to school and study law and become a lawyer. But I probably would have been miserable, or they would have had some very theatrical court sessions

Byrne: I also started young in Australia. I was 8 when I started classes, and then 13 when I got my first job. I went to university, but I didnt finish my degree. My major was English literature. So I suppose I would have done something along those lines. But, I mean, I operate on the assumption that I will never work again.

Michele: Why?

Stonestreet: Its fuel. Im sort of a masochist in that way, I guess. You know, playing sports, I was the guy that responded by getting angry with myself.

Slattery: I used to be more insecure about working, and I guess the older I get, the more rich my life becomes, I dont need to work as much as I used to. I mean, this is a hard town to be in when you have nothing else to do besides show business. Its brutal, especially as an actor, because you sit around with this low-grade fever of anxiety, waiting for the phone to ring. Or waiting for something.

Weiner: Thats why I wrote my script. I was tired of waiting. I was like, "They will never let me fly the plane. Im building an airport." I always think its strange about creative people: Lets say your career goes from 1962-70 -- but youre the Beatles I mean, thats plenty. We all want to keep working, but I dont think its all about maintaining stardom.

Probst: I was listening to Jewel being interviewed the other day, and she said, "When my first album sold 12 million copies, I sat down and I thought, All right, I can go two ways with this. This can become pressure that I will never live up to, or it can become this opportunity that I never have to have another hit." And she said, "I went that way and Ive now written 500 songs that nobodys ever heard. I write every single night. And as an artist, I couldnt be more fulfilled."

Stonestreet: Theres no destination. For me, as an actor, now that Im on TV, I dont think, "Im going to do movies." Ive worked for 14 years to get a job for more than three days on a show.

YOU NEVER HAD MORE THAN THREE DAYS WORK?

Stonestreet: Well, I was on "The West Wing" for eight. That was my longest stretch of a job. But, you know, Ive never had a sustained job. So Ive told my agents, managers, "Im going to enjoy this job and not worry about getting another job." Im going to live in this moment and enjoy this time.

Kaling: Ive always had an enormous chip on my shoulder. Even now, in the seventh season of the show, Im like, "Why am I not in charge? Why am I not a star? I want to do my own thing" And I thought that would go away. I thought that the business was full of very happy people and that the chip on my shoulder that I had when I was 8 or 9 would go away. And if anything, my chip on my shoulder has just gotten bigger.

LEA, WHATS SURPRISED YOU THE MOST ABOUT THE BUSINESS?

Michele: Nothing feels as real as I thought it would. Im waiting for it to feel real. Everyone on the outside is like, "Isnt this so unbelievable?" But it will never feel to you what everyone else sees it as. That might seem sort of weird or ungrateful, but its not. Im happy its not that way, because its just about what were doing in the moment.

"Modern Family" co-creator takes on Internet omg

LOS ANGELES Hollywood Reporter - Ever since "Modern Family" co-creator Steve Levitan told The Hollywood Reporter about his efforts to remove his Emmy-nominated comedy hit from ABC.com last month, he has been stirring up cyberspace with his take on Modern Viewing. In an interview Thursday, Levitan spoke about Hulu, piracy and how his bosses feel about his stance.

SO WERE HEARING STEVE LEVITAN HATES THE INTERNET.

Steve Levitan: Laughs My wife would think thats hilarious since Im on it so much.

LETS START WITH HULU; WHATS YOUR TAKE THERE?

Levitan: Look, Im not naive; I understand why big media backed Hulu -- to stave off piracy and to gain some control in the online space -- but I dont believe Hulus upside outweighs the potentially disastrous long-term effects. Network TV has some distinct advantages over the music and newspaper industries. Sharing a few songs from an album requires very little bandwidth. News is available from a wide variety of sources. But at the risk of sounding like a pompous ass, nobody but a shows creator and producers is capable of delivering that particular show.

I acknowledge that Hulus easy accessibility probably keeps some people from pirating. But a respected industry analyst says less than 5% of TV content is being stolen today. Even if that number quadruples as broadband speeds improve, that means 75% of the audience will still be perfectly happy with the present model. And, to quote that analyst, "The logic of Im having trouble getting paid for my content, so let me give it away for free probably drives Wall Street to allocate capital to other industries."

My other concern is that Hulu is an asset being built with our product. If I were responsible for News Corp.s stock prices, I might do the same thing. But I feel compelled to speak out if I feel that "growth" comes at the expense of our show.

AND ABC.COM STREAMING? SAME ESSENTIAL ARGUMENT?

Levitan: Look, I value every single one of our viewers, which is why I just want them to be clearly counted, no matter on what platform theyre watching. Right now the producers of "Modern Family" have no idea how many people watch our show each week on all platforms, and nobody seems to want to tell us. If a disproportionate number of any shows viewers watch in alternative ways, then, under the current system, that show may not appear to be as strong as it actually is. If a show brings someone to a screen, any screen, then shouldnt they get credit for that? If not, then some really interesting new shows with a disproportionate number of young online viewers will get canceled because their audience isnt being counted. That said, Ive been told that Nielsen will step up its measurement of online numbers this season and that other companies like Rentrak are making inroads. Hopefully, these are steps in the right direction.

WHAT ABOUT THE ARGUMENT THAT ONLINE VIEWING PROVIDES A VALUABLE MARKETING PLATFORM?

Levitan: Its true. Its also a great way for people to catch up. But once a show is launched, once its successful, it stops being a marketing platform. "Family Guy" does not need Hulus promotion.

WHAT KIND OF BUSINESS MODEL WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE ONLINE FOR "MODERN FAMILY"?

Levitan: 1 Show "Modern Family" online, but include all the same commercials. The CW sold its 2010-11 upfront ad inventory this way and was able to charge higher rates than if the spots were on network alone. 2 Make those online viewership numbers readily available to everyone. 3 If some people want to view the show without commercials, then, by all means, allow them to do that for a fee.

SOME ARE DOUBTLESS READING THIS GOING: "BUT YOUR SHOW IS SO SUCCESSFUL SO WHAT IF SOME WATCH ONLINE TOO?"

Levitan: The iPhone and iPad are very successful, but, with all due respect to the prophetic Steve Jobs, I dont see Apple giving them away. Its very simple. Shows like "30 Rock" and "Lost" and "The Office" are expensive to produce. Plus these "hits" cover the costs of all the misses. If viewers want to continue to see quality content like that, then we have to find a way to keep it profitable. Otherwise, well all be watching clips of a sneezing panda -- which, by the way, were adorable.

OTHERS PROBABLY WONDER: SHOULDNT THIS BE ADDRESSED DURING WGA WRITERS GUILD OF AMERICA CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS?

Levitan: This does not feel to me like an issue that gets settled by our union. This will be decided at the highest levels by those who have the power to do so.

RUPERT MURDOCH ALSO HAS BEEN AN ADVOCATE OF CONTENT CREATORS GETTING PAID FOR USE OF COPYRIGHTED CONTENT ONLINE.

HAS HE REACHED OUT?

Levitan: In June, I voiced some of my concerns when I spoke at the D8 conference, and Mr. Murdoch was sitting in the front row. Afterward, we had a very friendly chat. I was heartened to hear that he shares many of my same concerns.

WHATS BEEN THE REACTION FROM ABC BOSSES TO YOUR COMMENTS?

Levitan: I have a very friendly relationship with Walt Disney Co CEO Bob Iger and Disney-ABC Television Group president Anne Sweeney, and I respect them both. Theyve been incredibly supportive of "Modern Family." They know my opinions, and while we may disagree on some issues, I understand theyre wrestling with extremely complex issues in a fast-changing environment. Their job is to steer a multinational corporation, while my job is just to watch out for "Modern Family." I certainly believe that there exists a sweet spot where our interests align.

DO YOU THINK THAT BRINGING THIS ISSUE OUT IN THE OPEN HAS ADVANCED THIS CAUSE?

Levitan: Many people at all levels are having this conversation privately. Im the only one dumb enough to have it out in the open.

DO YOU THINK OTHER TV PRODUCERS NEED TO BE SPEAK UP?

Levitan: I would never presume to tell anyone else what they need to do. However, if others share my concerns, Id sure appreciate the company. A dramatic "Im Spartacus" moment would be nice.

Pritzkers 1st is silent film with live music AP

RALEIGH, N.C. Dan Pritzker has spent more than 15 years and millions of dollars trying to bring the story of a jazz singer of whom little is known to the big screen.

Then he decided to release another movie first. And not just any other movie, but a silent, black-and-white movie about Louis Armstrong.

"Since I finished the silent film first, its kind of like I finished my second film before I finished my first, which is a little ridiculous," Pritzker acknowledged.

Pritzker, the billionaire son of the late Hyatt hotel magnate Jay Pritzker and a musician in his own right with the R&B band Sonia Dada, had intended to release "Bolden," starring Anthony Mackie, as his debut film project. Its about Buddy Bolden, the cornet player virtually unknown in most circles but credited with being one of the creators of jazz.

But while Pritzker was writing the script for that movie in 2001, he took his mother to see the Charlie Chaplin classic "City Lights," complete with a live symphony, in Chicago. He decided it would be a challenge to make a silent film as well, one that was supposed to pick up where "Bolden" left off.

Thats where the inspiration for "Louis" was born. It tells a fictional story of a 6-year-old Louis Armstrong played by Anthony Coleman, whose dreams of playing the trumpet are intertwined with the seedy, corrupt underworld of early 20th century New Orleans. Jackie Earle Haley plays an evil, corrupt politician with more than a passing interest in a brothel, and Shanti Lowry stars as the beautiful prostitute who captures the heart of the politician and young Louis.

Lowry, who stars in both movies as the same character, said she didnt know what to expect while filming the silent "Louis," but she wasnt at a disadvantage because neither did anyone else, including Pritzker.

"Dan was in the same boat with us. Hed never done it before," Lowry said. "And every day we got on the set and created the scene. It was not always exactly what was on the page. ... It was an adventure every day."

The movie, photographed by Academy Award-winning cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond, opened Aug. 25 in Chicago, played in Detroit, and is scheduled to be screened in Bethesda, Md., New York and Philadelphia over the next few days. Each showing will feature live accompaniment by jazz great Wynton Marsalis, the films executive producer, his 10-piece ensemble, and pianist Cecile Licad.

Right now, there are no plans to show "Louis" in other theaters after its initial dates. But Pritzker said hell figure out how to bring "Louis" to a wider audience, even if it means showing the movie with recorded music instead of a live orchestra.

"Ive been showing it to people with music just attached to it," he said. "Humility aside, it came out really well, and it plays completely."

Lowry agrees, saying she doesnt care if its a commercial success but only hopes those who do see it "Louis" love it as much as she does.

"Its like a museum piece," she said. "You could freeze frame any piece and put it on a wall."

Now that "Louis" is out, Pritzker can concentrate once again on his first love, the movie "Bolden."

Bolden was institutionalized in 1907 and died in 1931 without leaving behind a single recorded note of music, but is considered by many historians as an integral figure in the creation of jazz.

"Its the poetry and the tragedy an anonymous black guy who created this music thats incredible," Pritzker said. "Jazz is the American art form.

Horror filmmaker Eli Roth talks exorcisms in new movie omg

LOS ANGELES Reuters - Since coming on to the horror film scene fifteen years ago with "Cabin Fever," filmmaker Eli Roth made a name for himself in the genre with the "Hostel" franchise. An occasional actor, he got a chance to shine last year as the infamous "The Bear Jew" in Quentin Tarantinos "Inglourious Basterds."

Roth sat down with Reuters to discuss his latest producing effort, "The Last Exorcism," which opens in U.S. movie theaters on Friday. The film is about a minister who lets a documentary crew film his last exorcism. A non-believer who has swindled plenty believers in the past, he is unprepared for what he encounters.

Q: What kind of childhood did you have that would make you grow up and create such scary and gory movies?

A: "I grew up in Newton, Massachusetts, in the safest neighborhood, in a very wonderful, loving household. My father Dr. Sheldon Roth was a professor of psychiatry at Harvard University and my mothers a fantastic painter. I was the neighborhood babysitter and never got in to trouble."

Q: Where there signs of blood and guts in your future back then?

A: "Id say, I want to film someone being chopped in half with a chainsaw and my parents would say, Thats wonderful honey. Heres a saw, be careful. They never saw it as real violence; they always saw it as creative expression."

Q: With parents like that, you must have your own psychological theories when it comes to horror films.

A: "Horror movies are the last place in society where its socially acceptable to be scared. We cant be scared at home, we cant be scared at our jobs. But when youre scared at a movie, theres no shame. Youre not a coward. We all have feelings we bundle up our whole lives and when we watch a scary movie, we are able to release them."

Q: Your latest film, "The Last Exorcism," is about a young woman possessed by the devil. Can that really happen?

A: "Having been raised by a psychiatrist, I was told anything psychological was a mental illness. Then I saw the 1973 feature "The Exorcist" and it changed everything. It really freaked me out. I told my dad, Whats this whole possession thing youve never told me about? He said, Dont worry about that. Were Jews. We dont believe in that."

Q: Did that quiet your fears?

A: "No I was certain it was going to happen to me. I thought I was going to be the test case for the Devil. Hed be like, See? I got you Jews too"

Q: And today, what do you believe?

A: "Exorcism and possession is the kind of thing Im almost scared to believe in. On the set of "The Last Exorcism," the brother of one our drivers was an exorcist. Hed talk about it like it was no big deal, like he went to the store and bought milk."

Q: Youve done cameo roles in movies here and there, but "Inglourious Basterds" was your biggest role yet. Do you consider yourself an actor?

A: "I think of myself as a writer-director first and foremost. Even when I was acting in Inglourious Basterds, I still shot the film-within-the-film, Nations Pride. I couldnt quite let go of my directors hat. I might actually write a part for myself one day and then Ill be able to combine all three."

DiCaprio attacker to face trial

A woman accused of attacking Leonardo DiCaprio with a broken bottle at a Hollywood party in 2005 has been ordered to stand trial in Los Angeles.

Aretha Wilson, 40, faces one count of assault with a deadly weapon. Her lawyer said he expected the case to begin within 60 days.

DiCaprio required a dozen stitches to his face and neck after the party.

The judge, who saw photographs of the stars injuries, said he did not consider them "trivial or moderate".

The photographs, showing cuts to the actors ear and neck, have not been made public.

The star of Titanic and Inception was not in court for the hearing.

Extradition

Ms Wilson has remained in jail since pleading not guilty to the charge earlier this month after failing to secure bail of $150,000 96,600.

She had previously been ordered not to contact or come within 500 yards 457m of DiCaprio.

Ms Wilson could face up to seven years in prison if convicted.

She is accused of sneaking into a party hosted by Paris Hiltons former boyfriend, Rick Salomon.

According to police, she mistook DiCaprio for a former boyfriend and attacked him with a bottle.

DiCaprio later filed a formal criminal complaint and a warrant was issued for Ms Wilsons arrest.

Ms Wilson fled to Canada afterwards and had to be extradited to the US last month to face charges.

Her next scheduled appearance in court is on 9 September.
