Shots fired near George Clinton concert in Cleveland

CLEVELAND, Ohio | Sun Jul 31, 2011 5:08pm EDT

CLEVELAND, Ohio (Reuters) - A shooting occurred near a family unity festival in Cleveland headlined by funk musician George Clinton, police said on Sunday.

Shots were fired in the parking lot of a nearby foodstore, "relatively close" to Luke Easter Park, where the annual "Family Unity In the Park" festival was held on Saturday, according to an official of the investigative unit for homicide for the City of Cleveland Division of Police.

The official, who declined to be named, said he could not confirm reports one person was killed and three others injured in the shooting.

A 16-year-old boy was shot in the head and a 20-year-old female was hit in the neck when shots broke out during a fight, TMZ and BET reported Sunday. The reports said emergency services transported others to the hospital for their wounds, but no one had been arrested.

According to the Cleveland Police official, a note on the incident put the time of the shooting at 9:55 p.m.

George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic were due to take the stage at the free family event just after 8 p.m., according to an announcement for the event.

The police official said he could not give details of the shooting.

"Detectives on that one are out there right now investigating," he said. "We don't share information; we just work with the families."

Luke Easter in eastern Cleveland is the largest urban park in the state of Ohio, according to the Family Unity in the Park website. The park has also hosted political leaders such as Jesse Jackson and John Kerry.

"Bring your family, your blankets, your lawn chairs, your picnic baskets, and your grills for this family celebration. There will be a kiddie park for kids, health screenings, voter registration, information booths and more," the promotional website for Saturday's event stated.

Amy Winehouse tops UK albums chart after death

LONDON | Sun Jul 31, 2011 2:10pm EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - "Back to Black" by Amy Winehouse shot back to the top of the British albums chart Sunday, a week after the troubled singer died at the age of 27.

Winehouse, famous for her distinctive soul songs and beehive hairdo, struggled with drinking and drug problems throughout much of her career. The cause of her death has not yet been determined as officials await results of toxicology tests.

Sales of the singer's recordings, released by the Universal Music label, rocketed following news that she had been found dead at her London home on July 23. That propelled her album "Back to Black" up from last week's 59th position, the Official Charts Company said.

The album was released in 2006, reaching the number one spot in Britain at the time and winning five Grammy awards, pop music's equivalent of the Oscars.

It also produced a string of memorable tunes, including "You Know I'm No Good," "Love Is a Losing Game" and "Rehab," which contained the line: "They tried to make me go to rehab. I said 'no, no, no'."

The renewed popularity of the album pushed "21" by queen of the charts Adele to the second place.

Winehouse earned two more spots in the top 10 of best-selling albums. Her debut release "Frank" came in fifth, proving more successful after her death than in her lifetime as the album had previously peaked at number 13.

The box set incorporating "Frank" and "Back to Black" reached the 10th position.

The singer's death also ruffled the singles chart, with five of her tracks entering the top 40, including the "Back to Black" single at number eight. The best-selling song of the week was a new entry, "She Makes Me Wanna" by British boy band JLS.

U.S. music fans also honored Winehouse by snapping up 50,000 copies of her CDs in the week ended July 24, compared with 44,000 units that were purchased in all other weeks of 2011, record sales tracker Nielsen SoundScan said Tuesday.

The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported last week that material recorded before Winehouse's death could be released as a posthumous album.

They cited sources who said Winehouse had recorded "a lot of material" and that her parents would have the final say on whether a new album was to be released.

Winehouse's spokesman told Reuters there was no news about the release of a third album. "I know there's material about, but no one's talked about it," he said.

Tearful Jolie gets Sarajevo film festival award

SARAJEVO | Sat Jul 30, 2011 6:01pm EDT

SARAJEVO (Reuters) - Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie was close to tears as she received a special award during an unannounced visit to Sarajevo's film festival Saturday with partner Brad Pitt.

"I will start crying if you don't stop," Oscar-awarded Jolie told the audience who gave her a standing ovation at the city's National Theater.

Jolie chose Bosnia's 1992-95 war as the setting for her first film as a director. "In the Land of Blood and Honey" is due to be released in December.

She has also visited Bosnia as a goodwill ambassador for the U.N.'s refugee agency UNHCR and funded the construction of several houses for returnees in eastern Bosnia.

Festival director Mirsad Purivatra presented Jolie with a heart-shaped award when she appeared at the closing ceremony.

"Tonight we are giving the honorary Heart of Sarajevo to a great artist, not only for the great impact she has in the world of cinema but also for persisting and her active engagement in the complexities of the real world we live in," Purivatra said.

Jolie, dressed in a long peach dress, stood on stage with eyes full of tears waiting for the clapping to die down.

"I told Brad in the car I was afraid I was going to cry," she said, her voice breaking.

Jolie's film tells the story of a love affair between a Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) woman and a Serb, who were on opposite warring sides during the conflict.

She planned to shoot parts of the film in Sarajevo and engaged a local crew. But she had to move to Budapest after some female victims of sexual violence objected to details in the plot and Bosnian authorities canceled a filming permit.

"I am so honored to be here at this festival," Jolie said after receiving the award. "There is no greater example of the strengths of the artists and the festival that began during the war and grew stronger every year."

The Sarajevo film festival was launched toward the end of the Bosnian capital's 43-month siege by Bosnian Serb forces.

Jolie presented Austrian actor Thomas Schubert with the award for the best actor for his role in the film "Atmen," directed by Karl Markovics.

Atmen, about a young offender searching for his mother, was also named best film in the festival.

Romanian actress Ada Condeascu won the prize for best actress for her role in the film "Loverboy."

UK queen's granddaughter Zara weds in Scotland

EDINBURGH | Sat Jul 30, 2011 12:21pm EDT

EDINBURGH (Reuters) - Queen Elizabeth's granddaughter Zara Phillips married fellow athlete Mike Tindall on Saturday in a private ceremony in the Scottish capital Edinburgh.

Prince William and wife Kate, who tied the knot in April in a public display of royal pomp and pageantry, and the British monarch herself were among the guests in the Canongate Kirk, where the Queen worships when staying in Edinburgh.

A few hundred fans waving Union Jack flags lined the street leading up to the church as guests sporting hats and kilts arrived for Britain's second royal wedding of the year.

After the ceremony, traditional Scottish bagpipe music was played as the newlyweds, the bride wearing an ivory floor-length dress and a full-length veil, emerged from the church to loud cheers from the crowd outside.

Phillips, 30, was considered something of a "royal rebel" when she was younger, having her tongue pierced as a teenager.

But the daughter of Princess Anne and her first husband Mark Phillips has followed in her mother's footsteps to enjoy a successful horse-riding career.

In 2006 she won an individual gold on her horse Toytown at the World Equestrian Games in Germany, helped Britain win a team silver and was voted BBC sports personality of the year.

Tindall, a well-known rugby player Tindall, 32, was part of the England team that beat Australia to win the World Cup in 2003. The couple met during that tournament.

Their wedding was due to be followed by a reception at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Queen's official residence in Scotland.

Several thousand fans gathered outside the church and the palace hoping to catch a glimpse of royalty, police estimated.

However, the low-key festivities took many in Edinburgh by surprise. "Who's getting married?" asked Alberto Alvarez, 38, who has come from Spain for a holiday.

"I am very happy for them anyway," he added.

Hugh Hefner and runaway bride patch things up

LOS ANGELES | Fri Jul 29, 2011 4:35pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hugh Hefner and Playmate Crystal Harris, his former fiance, have patched things up in no time flat.

Harris has apologized for saying this week on shock jock Howard Stern's radio show that sex with the 85 year-old Playboy founder lasted "like about two seconds," and that she never saw him naked.

"The Stern interview scared me, he's harsh," Harris, 25, said in a Twitter post on Thursday evening. "I was unprepared and blurted out things I shouldn't have said, I'm sorry."

The magazine mogul, who had previously accused Harris of lying about their relationship, welcomed his former lover's mea culpa in his own tweet that followed shortly about hers.

"Crystal apologized for her Howard Stern interview, which I appreciated," Hefner tweeted. "It didn't have much to do with reality."

Harris was Playboy magazine's Miss December 2009 and was engaged to Hefner a year later, but left him and the Playboy mansion five days before their planned wedding on June 18 of this year.

Hefner, who has cycled through a number of women in recent years, has since moved on to live-in girlfriends Anna Sophia Berglund and Shera Bechard, who also have appeared in his magazine.

"Humble" foam pie protester admits Murdoch assault

LONDON | Fri Jul 29, 2011 5:01pm EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - A British protester who threw a plate of foam at Rupert Murdoch during a parliamentary hearing into the phone-hacking scandal pleaded guilty in court to assault Friday and quipped: "this has been the most humble day of my life."

Jonathan May-Bowles, a comedian who uses the name Jonnie Marbles, was borrowing the phrase famously used by Murdoch when he appeared before a panel of lawmakers earlier this month.

Speaking to a crowd of reporters and photographers outside court in London, May-Bowles raised a laugh when he said: "I would just like to say this has been the most humble day of my life."

The 26-year-old, from Windsor, west of London, hurled the "foam pie" at Murdoch's face toward the end of a meeting of the British parliament's influential Culture, Media and Sport Committee.

The 80-year-old's third wife, Wendi Deng, who was sitting behind the media mogul, immediately jumped up and appeared to hit the attacker. The parliamentary hearing was adjourned for 15 minutes and the room was cleared. Murdoch returned to finish giving his evidence, without his foam-spattered jacket.

May-Bowles, wearing an open-necked casual checked shirt, pleaded guilty to assault and causing harassment, alarm or distress. He will be sentenced on August 2.

Jill Scott still in shock over No. 1 "Light of the Sun"

NEW YORK | Fri Jul 29, 2011 2:19pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Six weeks have passed since R&B singer Jill Scott hit No. 1 on album charts with "The Light of the Sun," and she still finds herself in shock.

That may sound odd from the Philadelphia native whose debut album, "Who is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1" was released 11 years ago. Since then, she has recorded more music and become a well-respected actress with roles in films such as "Hounddog" and "Why Did I Get Married," as well as starring in HBO television series "Ladies No. 1 Detective Agency."

But for "Light of the Sun," Scott took a new path in her singing career. She veered into hip hop, and the road that heretofore was less chosen, proved to be a good direction. Scott kicked off her 18-city Summer Block Party tour this week in Boston and stopped in New York on Thursday night.

"I (still) don't believe it...I have a copy (of the Billboard album chart), but I still don't believe it," Scott told Reuters about her success with "Light of the Sun."

"Somebody sent me a text message, 'Congratulations on the No. 1 album,' and I thought they were talking about the R&B chart. I was really happy about that. Then I found out it was the No.1 album in the country. It's overwhelming," said Scott.

"Light of the Sun" marks other significant milestones for Scott. The record was her first project since a split from Hidden Beach Recordings last year, and it is the inaugural project for her Blues Babe imprint in collaboration with Warner Bros. Records.

On the new album, the classic rap songs she listened to growing up and the current hits she keeps in rotation today heavily influenced Scott, she said, whose musical style has typically been a fusion of soul, jazz and R&B.

PERSONAL FAVORITES

One of her personal favorites on the new album, "All Cried Out Redux" features Doug E. Fresh, who was a pioneer in rap music and among Scott's early favorites in the genre.

"As a child of hip-hop, having recording anything with Doug E. Fresh is just surreal," said Scott.

Houston rapper Paul Wall, whom Scott calls one of the "nicest guys in hip-hop," joins her on "So Gone (What My Mind Says)" representing the voice of a mesmerizing, but less than chivalrous, lover she can't seem to shake.

How did the transformation to hip hop come about?

Last year, Scott was on a neosoul tour opening for singer Maxwell, singing the songs with which her fans were familiar, such as "Lyzel in E Flat" and "The Way." But Scott said her head, and heart, were in hip-hop.

"I started thinking about what kind of music I needed to hear before I went on stage. I think that was the catalyst. I need to hear Lupe Fiasco, Rick Ross and Mobb Deep," she said.

Hip-hop not only influenced the sound of this album but also Scott's recording style, approaching the music from the position of wanting to freestyle the beats, rhythms and lyrics.

"I went in and had fun. I didn't really write much. Some of the songs were recorded in one take. I freestyled pretty much the entire record," Scott said, echoing respected lyricists such as Jay-Z, who famously does not write down his lyrics.

"So Gone," for instance, was almost entirely improvised, Scott said.

In keeping with the old school theme of her album, Scott's Block Party tour is deejayed by acclaimed producer, master of turntables and fellow Philadelphian, DJ Jazzy Jeff.

The tour also reunites Scott with Doug E. Fresh. Vocalist Anthony Hamilton and R&B band Mint Condition open the show.

The tour next visits Detroit and has further stops in Chicago and Cleveland before ending on August 28 in Houston.

Beatles barber turns shop into tribute to Fab Four

BUENOS AIRES | Fri Jul 29, 2011 12:35pm EDT

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) - Beatles fan Gerardo Weiss ran a typical Buenos Aires barber shop until he had a dream that the Fab Four dropped in for a haircut.

Seven years later, Weiss has made Beatles-inspired cuts his specialty.

"The dream got etched on my memory," he said at the modest salon, the walls plastered with photos of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.

"I decided to get rid of the pictures these places usually have and just put up photos of The Beatles ... so people could see them and ask for their haircuts," he said.

One picture shows Lennon cutting someone's hair, another is of Harrison with curly locks down to his shoulders. It is the stuff of inspiration for Weiss.

"My favorite Beatles' haircut is the one Paul McCartney had in '74, when he was doing the Band on the Run tour ... it was short on the sides and longer at the back," said Weiss, whose eight-year-old son is called Lennon.

"When my wife got pregnant I prayed to God for a son, so I could pay homage to John," he said as "Hey Jude," with Lennon strumming on a guitar, played in the background.

It was 40 years ago that the hairdresser first heard a Beatles record, a moment he recalls with almost religious fervor. It was "Love Me Do," the Beatles' first single, that started his life-long love affair with the British band.

At first, the salon's Beatles-inspired makeover was a little too radical for many locals in the working-class city neighborhood of Flores.

Weiss said it was a struggle to convince customers a Beatles' haircut is as cool today as it was when the band from Liverpool revolutionized popular music in the 1960s.

But word spread and people from outside Buenos Aires and even abroad began trickling, joining more adventurous locals.

"I've told some of my friends, the ones who are Beatles fans, to come and they liked the results," Mario Genua, a 22-year-old petrol station attendant, said as Weiss styled his hair into a "John 1964" -- fluffy on top and at the sides.

"They were very different (and) they're still fashionable," he said.

Weiss has no plans to move his business to bigger premises in a trendy neighborhood or to tap into the city's booming tourist trade.

His dream is to keep Beatles' cuts in style.

"I'll carry The Beatles in my soul, my spirit, my blood for the rest of my life," he said. "They left a mark on me and I'm really happy to be able to do what I do. I even get paid for it."

"Entourage" creator says movie of hit show will happen

LOS ANGELES | Thu Jul 28, 2011 10:16pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - It seems only fitting that Vince Chase and his buddies may soon be seen on movie theater screens after ending their successful run on television,

"Entourage" creator Doug Ellin said on Thursday he sees a feature film spinoff from the popular HBO series, which is now in its eighth and final season.

"We are going to do a movie. It's a question of when and how quick. Hopefully we will sit down and come up with an idea," Ellin told reporters at the bi-annual Television Critics Association meetings.

He said the final season of the series about top young actor Vince Chase (Adrian Grenier), his friends and hyper-driven Hollywood agent leaves the characters and plots open to transition into a movie.

"I wanted to leave it with an element of, 'we loved hanging with these guys and we are going to miss them.'...There are no major deaths, no major plot lines," he said.

Mark Wahlberg, executive producer of the series that is based on his own early life as an upcoming actor in Hollywood, threw his support behind a movie version.

"If I had to finance it myself I would do it...I certainly hope that this has a chance to become a feature film. People are always saying the episodes are too short. They want to go on a journey with these guys," Wahlberg said.

With filming already finished on the final season, the cast said Thursday's appearance at the bi-annual TV critics presentation in Los Angeles was the last time they would be all be together.

"This is literally the last time we will all be sitting together as a TV show. Even as we sit here it is still bitter sweet. It has been a hell of a run," said an emotional Kevin Connolly, who plays Eric. "I don't know. I don't want to start crying."

The five main actors described the last day of filming as a crazy and emotional day. Jeremy Piven (Agent Ari Gold) said the last day on set was "like trying to act in the middle of a riot", and he said he had been allowed to keep Ari's flashy wristwatch as a souvenir.

Grenier said it was "like the last day of high school. People signing yearbooks, sets visits from friends. It was hard to get anyone to focus."

"We are all choked up, we have been together for eight years. We have spent countless hours together. We are all very proud of (the show) and we know we will always be connected on some level," he said.

Joe Pesci accuses Gotti producers of yanking role

LOS ANGELES | Thu Jul 28, 2011 4:12pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actor Joe Pesci has sued the makers of a movie about crime boss John Gotti and his son, accusing producers of reneging on a contract after he gained 30 pounds to play the notorious crime boss' right-hand man.

Pesci's lawsuit could be an early roadblock for the film, "Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father," that has gained widespread attention due to its subject matter and a cast that includes John Travolta, Al Pacino and Lindsay Lohan.

In a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Pesci said he came to an oral agreement with producer Fiore Films to play Angelo Ruggiero, the close friend of the late crime boss John Gotti, and was promised $3 million for his part.

But Fiore Films later told Pesci that instead he would be playing the lesser role of Anthony "Gaspipe" Casso and would receive only $1 million, according to the lawsuit.

The Italian-American actor's lawsuit accuses Fiore Films of breach of oral contract, fraud, misappropriation of name and likeness and unjust enrichment.

He is seeking damages of at least $3 million.

"We feel the lawsuit has absolutely no merit whatsoever," said Steve Honig, a spokesman for Fiore Films.

Pesci said in his lawsuit that he wants to play Ruggiero and is still willing to take the part now that he has begun "diligently preparing for the role."

"Among other things, (Pesci) has since ended his very strict and healthy diet, and has so far gained approximately 30 pounds in anticipation of playing Ruggiero, who was well known for his heavy and stocky build," Pesci's lawsuit states.

Pesci won an Oscar for his role as a mobster in 1990 film "Goodfellas," and is known for playing gangsters.

"Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father" will tell the story of John Gotti, who became boss of the New York Gambino crime family, and his relationship with his family and son, John Gotti Jr.

The senior Gotti, the so-called "Teflon Don," for his ability to evade conviction before eventually being found guilty of murder, racketeering, extortion and tax evasion, died of cancer in 2002 while serving a life sentence. John Travolta has signed on to play him.

His son, nicknamed "Junior", has also evaded conviction at four New York racketeering trials, with the defense that he quit mob life. He remains free.

Pacino is slated to play Neil Dellacroce, the Gambino crime family underboss and Gotti associate.

The film was originally called "Gotti: Three Generations," but the title has since changed and Barry Levinson has replaced Nick Cassavetes to direct the project.

Production is scheduled to start in New York in January and the film is slated for release in late 2012.

Polanski, Madonna films to air at Venice festival

ROME | Thu Jul 28, 2011 3:44pm EDT

ROME (Reuters) - Madonna's film about King Edward VIII's relationship with an American divorcee and Roman Polanski's "Carnage" are set to be among highlights at the 2011 Venice film festival.

Twenty-one films will vie for the top Golden Lion award at the 68th edition of the world's oldest film festival, which runs from Aug 31 to Sept 10 this year on the Lido seafront.

Madonna's directorial debut on a feature film, "W.E", is a drama that compares a modern day relationship with the controversial love between the king and divorced American Wallis Simpson, and will screen out of competition.

The king abdicated in 1936 in order to marry Simpson.

French-Polish director Polanski's latest film is an adaptation of Yasmina Reza's hit play "God of Carnage" and stars Kate Winslet and Jodie Foster.

Other highlights include Tomas Alfredson's adaptation of John Le Carre's Cold War thriller "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" and David Cronenberg's hotly anticipated psychological drama "A Dangerous Method" starring Keira Knightley and Viggo Mortensen.

British director Andrea Arnold's remake of Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights" and Ami Canaan Mann's "Texas Killing Fields" starring Sam Worthington, also feature in the lineup for the festival, which often serves as a launching pad for the Oscars.

Organizers earlier announced that George Clooney's "The Ides of March" about the U.S. presidential race set in the near future would open the festival.

The Hollywood star, a regular on the red carpet in Venice, wrote and directed the political drama, which is based on Beau Willimon's play "Farragut North".

Playboy Hugh Hefner accuses ex of lying about sex life

LOS ANGELES | Wed Jul 27, 2011 6:07pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Playboy founder Hugh Hefner says his former fiance is lying about their sex life, or lack of it.

Crystal Harris, 25, who ditched Hefner, 85, five days before their June wedding, told radio show host Howard Stern this week that sex with the Playboy magazine mogul "lasted like two seconds" and that she had never seen him naked.

"Crystal lied about our relationship on Howard Stern but I don't know why," Hefner said in a Twitter message on Tuesday. The remark, which was re-tweeted by some fans, has since been removed from his account.

"Crystal convinced me that she adored me. That was the first lie," Hefner said in response to a tweet from a fan. And he told another: "I feel sorry for Crystal. She seems lost."

Harris also claimed that she and Hefner only had sex once in their two-year relationship, that she had never seen him naked and that Hefner was more into "couch cuddling and movie nights" than sex.

Harris dumped Hefner in June. But the founder of the adult entertainment empire has already moved on, announcing that his new girlfriend is Shera Bechard, a 27 year-old French Canadian model who was Playboy's Miss November 2010.

"I'm happy to be in a better place with new girlfriends (Miss January 2011) Anna Sophia Berglund & Shera Bechard," he tweeted, adding that he had won Tuesday evening's game of dominoes at his Playboy Mansion home.

Piers Morgan again defends work on UK tabloid papers

LOS ANGELES | Wed Jul 27, 2011 5:56pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - British journalist Piers Morgan said on Wednesday he had never strayed into illegal tactics during his years working for three British tabloid newspapers.

Morgan, who has already denied any role in the phone hacking scandal engulfing News Corp's News of the World paper, made his latest statement after media outlets unearthed a 2009 interview with BBC Radio, in which Morgan seemed to validate some shady actions by tabloids.

The current host of the CNN talk show "Piers Morgan Tonight" has come under scrutiny in the past week because he edited the News of the World from 1994 to 1995 and later edited the rival U.K. tabloid, the Daily Mirror until he left in 2004.

Morgan has also raised eyebrows for publicly defending News Corp chairman Rupert Murdoch, who shut down the News of the World earlier this month after allegations of widespread phone hacking by reporters and private investigators in search of exclusive stories.

On the 2009 BBC radio program "Desert Island Discs," Morgan was asked how as a "nice middle class boy" he felt about people who "rake through bins" and "tap people's phones" to dig up dirt for the tabloids.

"To be honest, let's put that in perspective as well," Morgan said on the program. "Not a lot of that went on. A lot of it was done by third parties rather than the staff themselves. That's not to defend it, because obviously you were running the results of their work."

In a statement on Wednesday, Morgan sought to clarify his remarks in 2009.

"My answer was not specific to any of the numerous examples (the interviewer) gave, but a general observation about tabloid newspaper reporters and private investigators," he said.

"As I have said before, I have never hacked a phone, told anyone to hack a phone, nor to my knowledge published any story obtained from the hacking of a phone."

In Britain, questions are now being asked about whether the scandal went beyond papers owned by News Corp. Trinity Mirror, publisher of the Daily Mirror, said on Tuesday it had launched a review of its editorial controls and procedures, while the Daily Mail newspaper group said its titles had not published any stories based on hacked messages.

A Minute With: Neil Patrick Harris about "Smurfs"

LOS ANGELES | Wed Jul 27, 2011 12:09pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Neil Patrick Harris may be the most versatile star in showbiz. The Emmy-award winner can sing and dance, perform voice-overs, host award shows, and still finds to act in the TV show "How I Met Your Mother."

Now, he's working with little people in family film "The Smurfs," which mixes live-action characters with the blue animated creatures made famous in the cartoons.

The film hits theaters Friday with Harris playing a marketing executive whose life and career are thrown into chaos when the Smurfs magically appear in his New York apartment.

Harris spoke to Reuters about his outrageous behavior in the "Harold and Kumar" movies and how he avoided the traps of Hollywood stardom as a child actor.

Q: Were you a Smurfs fan as a kid?

A: "I watched the cartoons, but I wasn't a rabid fan like a lot of people, and I've been wildly surprised at how many people I know are secret Smurf freaks. They all wanted to know, did I have to be painted blue? And which Smurf am I playing? So I had to keep explaining, I'm not a Smurf in the movie."

Q: How hard was it acting with creatures that don't exist?

A: "It was hard, especially at first. But I'm a very technical actor and I love all the stuff like green screen. But then you don't know how far to push it physically. I found the bigger you go the better -- but that's so counter-intuitive when you're on stage with no one there. It seems so silly, making all these faces to nobody, but later when you watch it with the Smurfs animated in, it makes perfect sense."

Q: How much of you is in your character?

A: "A lot. I wanted to make sure, since it's a family film for a younger audience, that all my dialogue sounded natural and not like a note from a studio executive. So I used my own writers and we worked hard to find the right tone."

Q: It looks like you had a lot of fun making it?

A: "We did. The cast -- Jayma (Mays) and me, Sofia (Vergara), Hank (Azaria) -- we all had a blast shooting in New York. I'd happily do another one if this is a hit."

Q: You're next in "A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas," a slight change of pace from "The Smurfs."

A: (Laughs) "Yeah, it's very dark! Neil Patrick Harris outdoes himself in every 'Harold and Kumar' film with a new drug and a new level of outrageousness. I have a great big song-and-dance number, and I've taken a liking to crack. That's all I'll say."

Q: Speaking of, how come you're never caught in some tawdry sex or drug scandal like a normal star? What's wrong?

A: "Maybe I'm too busy at work, and when I get home I just want to cuddle up and watch TV. I'm kind of boring in that sense. I lived my craziest chapters in Hollywood when I had a fake ID and did the whole club scene. But when I turned 21, 22, I was done with the partying and just wanted to get serious about my career."

Q: Q: You started off as a child star. Do you come from a showbiz family?

A: "Not at all. They're all lawyers. But my parents are kind of hams, and there was a lot of artistic encouragement growing up, and I was an extrovert kid who loved singing and going on local talent shows."

Q: Most child stars never make the transition to adult stars. How did you manage to do it?

A: "I love working and I'm very wary of the fame, and that's probably a healthy place to start. If you love all the fame and you don't like working hard, you're probably doomed."

UK man wins fight to make "Stormtrooper" helmets

LONDON | Wed Jul 27, 2011 9:26am EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - A British prop designer who makes replicas of the menacing Stormtrooper helmets featured in Star Wars films won a legal battle Wednesday against director George Lucas, who took him to the High Court in 2008 over copyright infringement.

The Supreme Court ruled that the replicas were not covered by copyright law because they were not works of art, the Press Association reported.

But the court also ruled that the director's copyright had been violated in the United States.

Judges said 62-year-old Andrew Ainsworth is free to continue making the helmets in his studio in Twickenham, southwest of London, although he cannot export them to the U.S.

"I am proud to report that in the English legal system David can prevail against Goliath if his cause is right," Ainsworth said in a statement. "If there is a force, then it has been with me these past five years."

Ainsworth, who made most of the helmets in the original Star Wars film uses original moulds and tools to make replicas for fans.

"We don't export to the US, so it doesn't affect us. We export everywhere else: Australia, Singapore -- we're looking at that side of the world," he said.

Both the UK Court of Appeal and the High Court had already ruled in Ainsworth's favor in his battle with Lucas's production company Lucasfilm, who had successfully sued him in the U.S. for $20 million before taking their legal battle to Britain.

After Wednesday's judgment, Lucasfilm vowed to continue defending its property rights.

It said in a statement it was committed "to aggressively protecting its intellectual property rights relating to Star Wars in the UK and around the globe through any and all means available to it, including copyright, trademark, design patents and other protections afforded by law."

It added it encouraged recent efforts by the British government to modernize copyright and design laws and added that film props are protected by the law in "virtually every other country in the world."

Amy Winehouse sales spike after her death

LOS ANGELES | Tue Jul 26, 2011 9:25pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Thousands of Amy Winehouse fans went to "Rehab" in the United States for a fresh listen to the British songstress who died late last week, according to figures released on Tuesday.

Record sales tracker Nielsen SoundScan said fans of the soul singer snapped up 50,000 copies of her CDs in the week ended July 24, compared to 44,000 units that were purchased in all other weeks of 2011.

Her 2006 smash hit album, "Back to Black," which includes the song "Rehab," accounted for 37,000 of those units sold in the United States, which was the highest weekly total since March 2008. Winehouse's debut album, 2003's "Frank," chalked up 7,600 unit sales, Nielsen SoundScan said.

Of the totals, more than 95 percent were digital downloads.

"Rehab," in which the singer with the beehive hairdo belted out the famous lyrics, "They tried to make me go to rehab. I said 'no, no no'," was the most downloaded single with 34,000 digital sales in the United States.

Fans purchased a total 111,000 Winehouse digital tracks via downloads, an increase of 2,000 percent over the previous week, Nielsen SoundScan said.

Winehouse died at her London home on July 24, at age 27, so it's likely the sales figures will spike even higher for the week ending Saturday, July 31, because fans were just learning of her death on the final day of the weekly tally.

Throughout much of her career, the singer struggled with drinking and drug problems, but on Tuesday, her father said she had been exercising every day and doing yoga recently.

An autopsy has been performed, but an official cause of death has not been determined as officials await results of toxicology tests.

The U.S. sales spike mirrors results in Britain where 24 hours after Winehouse's death, "Back in Black" occupied the top spot on iTunes album download chart.

Dan Peek, co-founder of rock band America, dies at 60

LOS ANGELES | Tue Jul 26, 2011 7:40pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Dan Peek, a co-founder and musician for the folk rock band America, famous for the No. 1 hit "A Horse with No Name," has died. He was 60.

Peek, who died on Sunday, founded the band in the late 1960s with bandmates Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell while they attended high school together in London, where their fathers were stationed with the United States Air Force.

America's self-titled debut album, which featured "A Horse with No Name," shot to the top of the charts in 1972. The group won a Grammy for best new artist that year, and enjoyed a string of other popular hits including "Ventura Highway" and "Lonely People."

"We created lasting music together and experienced a life that we could never have imagined," wrote America co-founder and bandmate Dewey Bunnell on the band's website. "This news brings me great sadness. My sincere condolences go out to his wife, Catherine, and the entire Peek family. May Dan rest in peace, and his memory be cherished forever."

Neil Portnow, chief executive of The Recording Academy which gives out music's highest awards, the Grammys, called Peek "a dynamic individual and great talent."

He noted that Peek was a multi-talented musician who played guitar, bass, keyboards and harmonica.

Peek left America in 1977 and went on to perform contemporary Christian music, but never found the sort of fame he enjoyed with the popular band that recorded hit singles.

Beckley, who called Peek "a dear friend for many years," said the man "and his music will live on in the great songs he shared with us all."

Winehouse funeral takes place in London

LONDON | Tue Jul 26, 2011 8:45am EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - The funeral of British singer Amy Winehouse was being held Tuesday after an autopsy failed to pinpoint the cause of her death.

Early indications show her music is set to dominate the British singles and albums charts this weekend, mirroring what happened in the weeks following the death of Michael Jackson.

The 27-year-old Winehouse, who had long battled drug and alcohol problems, was found dead in bed at her home in London on Saturday. Her funeral was being attended only by family and close friends, a spokesman said.

An inquest opened Monday and was adjourned until October, with police describing the death as unexplained. More tests are being carried out, with the results expected next month.

Her family was quoted in newspapers as saying they thought she died of a heart attack or seizure. Her boyfriend, Reg Traviss, denied rumors that she died in a drug-fueled haze.

"She had been full of life and so upbeat recently, exercising every day and doing yoga," he told the Sun. "This terrible thing that happened is like an accident."

Record industry body the Official Charts Company said on Tuesday that the singer's music was expected to dominate the British charts.

She is on course to have seven singles in the Top 40 and 14 in the Top 200, with the biggest selling track currently "Back To Black" followed by "Rehab," "Tears Dry On Their Own," "You Know I'm No Good" and "Valerie."

In the year following his death in June 2009 Jackson sold more records in Britain than any other artist.

As she fought drugs and alcohol, Winehouse slid from being a chirpy teenage singer to someone who could barely walk at her final concert performance in Belgrade, Serbia.

The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported Monday that material recorded before Winehouse's death could be released as a posthumous album. They cited sources who said Winehouse had recorded "a lot of material" and that her parents would have the final say on whether a new album was to be released.

Winehouse's spokesman told Reuters there was no news about the release of a third album. "I know there's material about, but no one's talked about it," he said.

Michael Jackson family members plan tribute concert

LOS ANGELES | Mon Jul 25, 2011 2:26pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Several members of Michael Jackson's family unveiled plans on Monday for a tribute concert to the late King of Pop, but performers were unnamed leading to a less-than-thrilling announcement for the "Thriller" singer.

The tribute show, supported by Jackson family matriarch Katherine Jackson, will be held on October 8 in Cardiff, Wales at the Millennium Stadium, which holds about 75,000 people. It will be broadcast live via satellite on pay-per-view television and into movie theaters around the world, some of which will screen it in 3D, said promoter Global Live Events.

Katherine Jackson told reporters at the unveiling in Los Angeles that she is proud of the event and the caliber of singers performing. No names were announced on Monday.

"If my son was here today, he would feel the same way, and so I'd like to say thank you very much for helping to keep my son's legacy alive," she said.

Michael Jackson, who rose to fame in his family of singers then embarked on a solo career that included smash hits such as "Thriller" and "Billie Jean," died in June 2009, of an overdose of the surgical anesthetic propofol he used as a sleep aid.

His physician at the time, Dr. Conrad Murray, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in Jackson's death. He has pleaded not guilty and a trial will start in September.

Jackson's brother, Jermaine Jackson, tried in vain to mount a tribute concert in Vienna in 2009, but plans were scrapped after he struggled to get big-name acts and the event's organizer went out of business.

Jermaine, and Michael Jackson's father Joe, were not on hand at Monday's announcement. Instead, Katherine was joined by family members, Tito, Jackie, Marlon and La Toya.

"I know that this tribute will be something spectacular," LaToya told reporters.

Amy Winehouse family pleads for "privacy and space"

LONDON | Mon Jul 25, 2011 12:26am EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - The family of Amy Winehouse sought "privacy" from the public eye on Sunday, one day after the young, beehive-haired soul singer's untimely death, which sent fans rushing to download her songs in remembrance.

The "Rehab" singer was found dead at her London home on Saturday, becoming the latest in a grim tally of music superstars who died at the seemingly cursed age of 27.

"Our family has been left bereft by the loss of Amy, a wonderful daughter, sister, niece. She leaves a gaping hole in our lives," her family said in a statement. "We are coming together to remember her, and we would appreciate some privacy and space at this terrible time."

Police say it is too early to speculate on how Winehouse died and a post mortem will not be conducted before Monday morning, but Winehouse's struggle with alcohol and drug addiction were well documented.

Her best known song, the booming "Rehab," from 2006 album "Back to Black," bore witness to her doomed struggle to get clean. Other members of what has been dubbed the "Forever 27" club include Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain, who died at that age in different circumstances after chaotic lifestyles associated with rock'n'roll careers.

"The thing that links them together is the fact that all of them have been pop cultural shifters, all of them have helped push the sound of modern music to new levels, and some of them have pushed it on a very large scale, be it Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones," said Eric Segalstad, author of "The 27s: The Greatest Myth of Rock & Roll".

In many cases the musicians' posthumous fame has surpassed the success they enjoyed in their career, with their recordings still selling and enjoyed by a new audience.

That may be the case for Winehouse, considered by some as among the most talented singers of her generation, who leaves only a slim set of recordings showcasing her talent.

SALES SURGE

Winehouse occupied top slot on the iTunes UK download chart 24 hours after her death with "Back to Black," the album that won five Grammy awards in the United States and turned the troubled north London girl into an international star.

"Back to Black," knocked fellow female British vocalist Adele's "21" off top spot on the iTunes chart.

Winehouse, who was on the Universal Music label, also occupied third spot, with a package comprised of "Back to Black" and her 2003 debut "Frank," while a "Deluxe Edition" of "Back to Black" was number four.

Her death came too late to influence the top 40 chart of downloads and disc sales released by the Official Charts company Sunday, but she is likely to top the list next week.

Sales of Winehouse's albums increased by 37 times between Friday and Saturday, with track sales up by 23 times, the Official Charts Company said. "We would expect an even bigger impact to roll through over the coming days," said Official Charts managing director Martin Talbot.

The sales surge mirrors the 2009 example of Michael Jackson, whose songs leapt to the top of the charts after his death.

Jackson's estate is estimated to have generated more than $310 million from album sales and spin-offs since the "Thriller" singer died two years ago. Jackson also struggled with drug addiction during his life, and his death was caused principally by an overdose of a powerful anesthetic, propofol.

Winehouse slid from being a chirpy teenage singer from a north London Jewish family to someone who could barely walk at her final concert performance in Serbia.

She won critical acclaim after the release of her debut album "Frank" in 2003 before becoming a worldwide phenomenon with the success of "Back to Black."

"It was between the two albums that she went off the rails, partly in reaction against the fame. And I think she was quite scared of her talent," biographer Chas Newkey-Burden told British broadcaster Sky News.

While Winehouse had been regularly recording songs, she had not released a new album since "Back to Black."

Her spokesman said it was unclear what use would be made of her unreleased recordings. But a posthumous album would seem inevitable given her huge popularity.

"She constantly wrote music, that's what she did. There are lots of demos knocking around and all sorts," the spokesman said.

Britain's "Rehab" singer Amy Winehouse dies aged 27

LONDON | Sun Jul 24, 2011 12:53am EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - Amy Winehouse, one of the most talented singers of her generation whose hit song "Rehab" summed up her struggles with addiction, died in London on Saturday at the age of 27.

The Grammy winner, famed for her black beehive hair, soulful voice and erratic behavior on and off stage, was found dead at her new home in Camden a month after a shambolic performance in Serbia forced her to cancel her entire European tour.

Police were called to the address at around 1500 GMT and nearly five hours later the body was removed for a post mortem after it appeared she had lost her battle with drink and drugs.

"Inquiries continue into the circumstances of the death," said police superintendent Raj Kohli. "At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained and there have been no arrests in connection with the incident."

He said reports that Winehouse had died of a suspected drugs overdose were speculation at this stage.

Family members had long warned that Winehouse's lifestyle, which saw her in and out of rehab and blighted her career as a live and recording artist, could be her downfall.

Her last filmed performance was in Serbia in June, when Winehouse was jeered by the crowd as she struggled to perform her songs and stay upright. On some tunes, the audience did most of the singing.

The gig, posted on the YouTube video sharing site, prompted her management to cancel all scheduled performances and give the performer as long as it took to recover.

Winehouse's record label Universal said in a statement: "We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of such a gifted musician, artist and performer. Our prayers go out to Amy's family, friends and fans at this difficult time."

Around 50 shocked fans and onlookers as well as camera crews and photographers gathered behind police tape blocking off the leafy street where Winehouse had just moved into a new house.

A few left flowers, candles and a teddy bear. One note of condolence read: "Beautiful Amy, night night, sleep tight."

"BACK TO BLACK"

The British singer was discovered by soul singer Tyler James at the age of 16 and in 2003 her debut album "Frank" was released, to general acclaim.

Her second album "Back to Black" was released in October 2006 and reached the No. 1 spot in Britain and earned her five Grammy awards, pop music's equivalent of the Oscars.

The album produced a string of memorable tunes, including "You Know I'm No Good," "Love Is a Losing Game" and "Rehab," which contained the line: "They tried to make me go to rehab. I said 'no, no, no.'"

Born on September 14, 1983, to a Jewish family with a history of jazz musicians, Winehouse's personal life has filled Britain's tabloid newspapers.

Winehouse was photographed wandering the streets of London barefoot and in only a bra and jeans in 2007 looking confused, the same year she married Blake Fielder-Civil who spent time in prison for beating up a pub landlord. They divorced in 2009.

In 2008, the singer's father Mitch said she had developed the lung condition emphysema and warned it could kill her if she continued to smoke drugs.

Mitch, a taxi driver who launched his own musical career on the back of his daughter's success, was in New York when the news broke. British media said he was on his way back to London.

Tributes poured in for an artist whose personal troubles stole the headlines in recent years and thwarted plans for an eagerly-anticipated third album.

Soccer star and celebrity David Beckham told Sky News: "It's very sad, she was such a talented girl, and a girl with such a huge future. Our hearts go out to her family, her loved ones."

Sarah Brown, wife of former prime minister Gordon Brown, tweeted: "sad sad news of Amy Winehouse - great talent, extraordinary voice, and tragic death, condolences to her family."

Kelly Osbourne, a singer and television personality, also took to the micro blogging site, writing: "i cant even breath right now im crying so hard i just lost 1 of my best friends. i love you forever Amy & will never forget the real you!"

"RICH, SOULFUL VOICE"

The Recording Academy in the United States praised the singer, who brought elements of jazz and Motown back into the musical mainstream.

"Her rich, soulful and unique voice reflected her honest songwriting and earned her a devoted fan following, critical acclaim, and the genuine respect and admiration of her musical peers," said its president Neil Portnow.

Broadcaster and radio DJ Paul Gambaccini said Winehouse's early death was sadly no surprise.

"We have been dreading this news for some time, hoping against hope that she would turn herself around, but she showed no evidence of being able to do so," he told BBC TV.

"She just could not control herself. It's tragic because both (her) albums were superb. We have 40 years of Frank Sinatra records, it turns out we only have two Amy Winehouse records."

Daniel Rossellat, founder of the Paleo Festival in Nyon, Switzerland, where Winehouse had been due to perform before withdrawing from the tour, likened her to Janis Joplin, another gifted singer who died at the age of 27.

"It is the tragic end to a wonderful voice, similar to Janis Joplin both in destiny and in voice," he told Swiss television.

Singer Billy Bragg wrote on his Twitter page that Winehouse joined not only Joplin but also Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain -- who all died at the same age.

Fans, stars tweet the blues over Winehouse death

LOS ANGELES | Sat Jul 23, 2011 8:50pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Soul singer Amy Winehouse, who died unexpectedly at age 27, received numerous tributes on Saturday from ordinary fans around the world and music luminaries ranging from Tony Bennett to producer Mark Ronson.

The "Rehab" singer whose problems with substance abuse were well-documented, died at her home in London, and while it appears she has lost her battle with drink and drugs, an official cause of death has yet to be determined.

Nevertheless, fans speculated that she became another in a long list of singers, actors and other celebrities whose problems in the public limelight led to their demise -- Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Heath Ledger.

Winehouse was the top trending topic on Twitter where many tweets read like this one from gigglinben: "meh hate waking up to hear amywinehouse is gone...dreaded it for ages...so young & so much talent sadly gone..hope she finds peace"

CRIerPourMoi posted: "her beautiful voice will be sorely missed. so unfortunate her disease got the best of her. RIP..."

The British singers' talent was discovered when she was 16, and her debut album "Frank" in 2003 earned acclaim. But it was her second CD, 2006's "Back to Black" that made her a star.

The record produced a string of memorable tunes, including "You Know I'm No Good," "Love Is a Losing Game" and "Rehab," which contained the line: "They tried to make me go to rehab. I said 'no, no, no.'" The album reached No. 1 in Britain and earned Winehouse five Grammys, pop music's highest honors.

RONSON CALLS WINEHOUSE "SOULMATE"

Ronson, the "Back to Black" producer, tweeted that Winehouse "was my musical soulmate & like a sister to me. this is one of the saddest days of my life."

Indeed, Twitter was alive with tributes from a who's who of the music world. Rapper and media mogul Diddy said "RIP Amy Winehouse" on the social network website and rocker Pete Wentz sent out "super sad to hear about the news. RIP. never take life for granted."

Some tweets had a harsher tone, such as this from mattissotrendy: "It's sad when anyone dies, but I find it hard to respect a drug addict. No matter how talented they were".

But singer/songwriter and Matchbox 20 frontman Rob Thomas sought to pour cold water on many of the more sarcastic remarks by tweeting, "So many people saying that because it's not a surprise that Amy Winehouse passed, it's not sad. I hope you have more compassion for friends."

Music legend Tony Bennett, who recorded the classic pop standard "Body And Soul" with Winehouse last March, issued a statement calling her "an artist of immense proportions.

"I am deeply saddened to learn of her tragic passing. She was an extraordinary musician with a rare intuition as a vocalist and I am truly devastated that her exceptional talent has come to such an early end," Bennett said.

The U.S.-based Recording Academy, which gives out the Grammys, also issued a statement calling Winehouse "a dynamic performer and musician who seamlessly blended rock, jazz, pop, and soul and created a sound all her own."

UK "Rehab" singer Winehouse found dead: report

LONDON | Sat Jul 23, 2011 1:27pm EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - British singer Amy Winehouse, whose hit single "Rehab" became the anthem for troubled celebrity culture, has been found dead at her home in north London, Sky News reported on Saturday.

Police said they had found the body of a 27-year-old woman at a home in Camden Square, north London, after being called by ambulance services around 1500 GMT.

"Inquiries continue into the circumstances of the death at this early stage. It is being treated as unexplained," a police spokesman said. A spokesman for the singer could not immediately confirm she had died.

Police had cordoned off the leafy street outside Winehouse's home in Camden, where around 20 onlookers had already gathered along with media photographers and camera crew.

Winehouse was born on September 14, 1983, to a Jewish family with a history of jazz musicians. She was discovered by soul singer Tyler James at the age of 16 and in 2003 her debut album "Frank" was released, to general acclaim.

Timberlake, Seyfried talk "In Time" at Comic-Con

SAN DIEGO | Fri Jul 22, 2011 4:05pm EDT

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - By now, most anyone who knows anything about Comic-Con International knows it has become a grand platform from which Hollywood's studios launch promotional campaigns for upcoming films and television shows.

A problem, for reporters and bloggers trying to cover those launches, is that having seen only brief clips of the films or TV shows, it's often hard to discuss them in a serious way.

But Reuters sat down with Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried on Thursday for a brief chat to ferret out the details of their upcoming action film, "In Time," which is set for release in October of this year.

From its description, the movie sounds like an old-fashioned crime thriller, only it is set in the future and people stop aging when they're still young and pretty -- which is perfect for a Hollywood movie. Here's what Timberlake and Seyfried had to say about "In Time."

Q: Justin, do you get to kill anybody in this movie?

Timberlake: "Maybe. (To Seyfried) Wait, do I kill anybody in this movie?"

Seyfried: "Yeah, you kill four."

Timberlake: "Yes I do."

Q: How does that make you feel, killing somebody?

Timberlake: "Feels good. But they were all bad, okay? They were all bad guys."

Q: You can prove that?

Timberlake: "Yes."

Q: Amanda, do you get to kill anyone?

Seyfried: "I shoot somebody."

Q: They don't die?

Seyfried: "Not because I shot them."

Q: Okay, so, there's some shooting and killing. Shifting gears, had you two hung out at all before starting this movie?

Timberlake: "We actually worked on another film called 'Alpha Dog.'"

Seyfried: "Kind of."

Timberlake: "Okay, we didn't actually work together. We were just in the same movie together. As a matter of fact, there are four actors in this movie that were in 'Alpha Dog.'"

Seyfried: "Olivia (Wilde)," "Vincent (Kartheiser)," and the two of us."

Q: They say good work often comes when actors have great 'chemistry' on screen. You two certainly seem to have it, here. Had you established any sort of chemistry before the movie?

Timberlake: "Amanda's really attractive so I don't have trouble having chemistry with her."

Seyfried. "That's not true."

Timberlake laughs

Seyfried: "C'mon...Is it my nose?"

Timberlake: "That's so attractive."

Q: Okay, let me try this: Amanda, what's unique about the character you play in "In Time'?

Timberlake: "Not really anything."

Seyfried: "Not true. She lives in a very rich world, she has all the time she would ever need. She could be immortal, but she doesn't want to be, she's bored. It's meaningless to her. She wants something exciting. She finds her place in the world, and what she wants out of life by going on the run and losing all the time she has."

Q: Justin, Did you get that from her performance?

Timberlake: "I did."

Q: Did Amanda out-act you?

Timberlake: (laughs) "She certainly tried, every scene... No, I'm kidding."

Seyfried: "No. I did. At least, I tried."

Timberlake: "She's great in the movie. I love Amanda as a person and as an actor, and I think so much of her gift as an actor comes from her being a good person. I think this is the best performance I've ever seen from her."

Seyfried: "No."

Q: So many actors talk about hating to "do press." If you had a choice between a long press conference or Chinese water torture, what would it be?

Timberlake: "I'd take the Chinese water torture."

Seyfried: "Oh, c'mon press conferences are fun -- when they are only one hour...when they're two, mmmmmmm..."
