Mel Gibson breaks silence on domestic violence scandal

LOS ANGELES | Fri Apr 22, 2011 1:54pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Mel Gibson has broken his silence on his damaging domestic violence scandal, calling the leak of angry personal phone calls with his then-girlfriend last year a "personal betrayal."

The Oscar-winning director of "Braveheart" described the leaked tapes, in which Gibson was heard ranting, swearing and threatening Russian girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, "terribly humiliating and painful for my family."

Gibson added that he did not care if he ever acted again.

"I've never treated anyone badly or in a discriminatory way based on their gender, race, religion or sexuality -- period," Gibson told Hollywood journalist Allison Hope Weiner in a lengthy interview for website Deadline Hollywood on Friday.

Gibson last month pleaded no contest to a charge of hitting Grigorieva, the mother of his baby daughter, as their relationship broke down in early 2010.

He was sentenced to three years probation, a year of counseling and community service.

In his first public comments on the saga, Gibson said the tapes of phone calls leaked a year ago were edited, adding; "It's one terribly, awful moment in time, said to one person, in the span of one day and doesn't represent what I truly believe or how I've treated people my entire life."

"Who anticipates being recorded? ... Who could anticipate such a personal betrayal?" Gibson said.

Gibson's longtime manager left him, his movie "The Beaver" was delayed for months, and actors on the sequel to comedy "Hangover 2" refused to work with him because of the fall-out of the sexist and racist remarks on the tapes.

They were leaked to the media as Gibson was trying to make an acting comeback after making vicious anti-Semitic remarks during a 2006 drunken driving arrest, and the end of his 28-year marriage.

The delayed movie "The Beaver", in which Gibson plays a depressed husband who communicates through a beaver hand puppet, is now to be released in the United States on May 6.

But Gibson seemed unconcerned by what movie-goers would think of him as an actor now.

"I don't care if I don't act anymore," he said. "I could easily not act again. It's not a problem. I'm going to do something now because I want to do it and because it's fun."

Gibson said he was working on a "total bodice-ripping swashbuckling" comedy movie project in which he hoped to take a supporting role.

Actresses Whoopi Goldberg and Jodie Foster were among the few Hollywood stars to publicly defend Gibson at the height of the Grigorieva scandal last year.

Gibson was not surprised at the lack of support.

"Why would anyone want to speak publicly and drag themselves through this crap? ... Very many people are supportive of course, but you find out who your friends are."

Lindsay Lohan in court for key jewelry theft hearing

LOS ANGELES | Fri Apr 22, 2011 1:01pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actress Lindsay Lohan arrived in court on Friday for a crucial hearing on a jewelry theft charge that threatens to sink her chances of reviving a career stalled by repeated trips to rehab and jail.

Lohan, 24, has strenuously denied that she stole a $2,500 gold necklace from a Los Angeles store in January, just weeks after completing three months of court-ordered treatment for drug and alcohol addiction.

Friday's preliminary hearing marks the first opportunity for Lohan's lawyer to present her side of the story, and for prosecutors to publicly lay out evidence against the actress.

Friends have said Lohan believed the jewelry was on loan when she walked out of the store wearing it.

Lohan arrived at court on Friday, dressed in a black jacket and dark pants, to hordes of photographers and television cameras outside.

A judge will decide at the end of the hearing whether the "Mean Girls" star should stand trial before a jury for felony grand theft, and face up to three years in jail if convicted.

Lohan last month rejected a deal offered by prosecutors that would have put her behind bars for three to six months if she pleaded guilty.

Her decision was seen as a huge gamble, given her legal problems of the last three years. Lohan is still on probation for a 2007 drunk driving and cocaine possession conviction. She spent two weeks in jail in 2010, and could be returned to jail simply for violating probation.

Lohan's thoughts on the eve of the trial however were all about resuming her career. "I cannot explain how excited i am to begin working on films again, on top of that- i better get one of my two favorite scripts that i am in love with," she said in a Twitter message late on Thursday.

Lohan this week secured a role in an upcoming movie about New York mobster John Gotti, although it was not clear how she would fit in filming later this year if she is jailed on the jewelry charge.

Once considered among the most promising young actresses in Hollywood with films like "Freaky Friday" and "Bobby", Lohan's career has come to a virtual halt. Her last movie was independent action film "Machete" in September 2010. Her 2009 movie "Labor Pains" failed to gain U.S. theatrical release and instead became a TV movie.

Last year, her legal problems caused her to lose the lead role in a movie about 1970s porn star Linda Lovelace.

Lohan acknowledged in March that she has a long way to go to regain favor in Hollywood.

"I miss being on set ... I know there is going to be a lot of steps I'll have to go through to prove myself again and get the trust from people I respect to work with," she said in a TV interview.

Lindsay Lohan to get her day in court on necklace charge
