Lohan fails court-ordered drug test (AP)

LOS ANGELES Lindsay Lohan has failed a court-ordered drug and alcohol screening test and could face a probation violation that might land her back in jail.

A person familiar with the case, who declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter, confirmed the positive test results for The Associated Press on Friday. The person declined to specify what substance triggered the positive result, which the source said occurred within the last month.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elden S. Fox had threatened Lohan with 30 days in jail for each probation violation.

Lohan later acknowledged the results on her Twitter page.

"Regrettably, I did in fact fail my most recent drug test and if I am asked, I am prepared to appear before judge Fox next week as a result," she wrote in one of a series of posts late Friday.

"Substance abuse is a disease, which unfortunately doesn't go away over night. I am working hard to overcome it," she wrote in another post.

A hearing would be conducted before Lohan could be returned to jail. Los Angeles County District Attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said no such hearing had been scheduled as of Friday afternoon.

The failed drug test was first reported by TMZ.com.

Lohan, 24, was sentenced to three months in jail followed by three months in rehab after violating probation stemming from a pair of drug and driving under the influence cases filed after two arrests in 2007. She ended up serving two weeks in jail and another 23 days in an inpatient rehab treatment at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

At a hearing last month, Fox ordered the actress to attend psychotherapy, drug and alcohol counseling as well as random drug and alcohol testing several times a week. Compliance would allow her to return to unsupervised probation in November.

Colbert to rally against faux nemesis Stewart (AP)

WASHINGTON "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart is hosting a "million moderate march" in Washington for people who think shouting is annoying but faux political nemesis Stephen Colbert will be nearby to keep fear alive against those "dark, optimistic forces."

Colbert, host of Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report," and his arch enemy on the network plan to hold opposing political rallies on the National Mall just before the November elections.

Stewart interrupted his regular fake newscast Thursday night to announce a "Rally to Restore Sanity" on Oct. 30. He said it's for people too busy with their normal lives to go to other political rallies.

"We're looking for people who think shouting is annoying ... who feel that the loudest voices shouldn't be the only ones that get heard," Stewart writes in promotion for his rally. "Think of our event as Woodstock, but with the nudity and drugs replaced by respectful disagreement."

No Adolf Hitler mustaches allowed at the Stewart rally unless it's drawn on a photo of the German dictator (or Charlie Chaplin). Past political rallies have featured posters with sitting presidents wearing Hitler-style mustaches, including Barack Obama and George W. Bush.

Nearby, Colbert also announced a "March to Keep Fear Alive" to restore "truthiness" to the nation on his show Thursday night. For those who don't know, truthiness was a 2006 word of the year that means "truth that comes from the gut, not books."

Colbert is encouraging "all freedom-loving patriots" to bring an overnight bag and five extra sets of underwear to challenge Stewart's "dark, optimistic forces." He said the nation can't afford a rally to restore sanity in the middle of a recession.

He wrote the United States is built on three bedrock principles: freedom, liberty and fear.

"They want to replace our fear with reason," he wrote. "But never forget 'reason' is just one letter away from 'treason.'"

The events come a few weeks after Glenn Beck's recent rally on the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s March on Washington. Stewart's website notes Oct. 30 was chosen as a date "of no significance whatsoever."

The rallies take aim at extremists from the political fringes. Stewart said it will give voice to about 70 to 80 percent of Americans who aren't heard in daily political discourse.

Stewart and Colbert have filed a single application for a permit to host 25,000 people on the Washington Monument grounds, National Park Service spokesman Bill Line said Friday. It hasn't been approved yet.

Stewart said Thursday night that his rally would be a "million moderate march." He suggested a few signs for the rally, including "I disagree with you, but I'm pretty sure you're not Hitler."

"You may be asking yourself ... 'but am I the right person to go to this rally?'" Stewart said on his show. "The fact that you would even stop to ask yourself that question as opposed to just jumping up, grabbing the nearest stack of burnable holy books, strapping on a diaper and pointing your car towards D.C. that means I think you just might be right for it."

Letterman knew Joaquin Phoenix was faking: writer

By Lindsay Powers

Fri Sep 17, 2010 11:43pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - David Letterman was in on the Joaquin Phoenix joke, according to one of his writers.

Casey Affleck has claimed that nobody (except for Joaquin Phoenix's agent) knew that Phoenix was faking his bizarre behavior for Affleck's documentary-style film "I'm Still Here," released September 10. But one of Letterman's writers, Bill Scheft, said in an interview last year: "Dave knew about it and Dave loved it because he could play along."

"It was great television," Scheft added. His interview with the independent newspaper Nuvo was dug up Friday in light of Affleck's admission this week that the events in the film were staged. "But I will take credit for the line, 'I think I owe Farrah Fawcett an apology.' That line was mine. I gave that to him during the break." (The actress rambled awkwardly during a 1997 appearance on Letterman's late-night talk show.)

Scheft said he was rebuffed when he tried to expose Phoenix. "I've told people that (everyone was in on the joke), and not only don't people believe me, they tell me that I'm wrong and that (Phoenix) is a schizophrenic and he needs help and he's going to end up like his brother (River, who died of a drug overdose in 1993). I said no. I saw the segment notes. It's an act. I saw Ben Affleck's brother taping the whole thing from offstage."

Affleck admitted to the New York Times Thursday that Phoenix's behavior was staged for his camera: "It's a terrific performance, the performance of his career."

Phoenix, who is considering his next film roles, will return to Letterman's couch Wednesday.

DA: Paris Hilton to avoid felony in Vegas arrest (AP)

LAS VEGAS Paris Hilton will serve a year of probation and avoid a felony conviction under the terms of a plea deal worked out with prosecutors following her arrest on drug charges in Las Vegas, Clark County District Attorney David Roger said Friday.

Roger said the celebrity socialite has agreed to plead guilty Monday in Las Vegas Justice Court to two misdemeanors stemming from the Aug. 27 arrest.

Hilton, 29, was arrested inside the Wynn resort, after police say a small plastic bag containing 0.8 grams of cocaine fell out of her Chanel purse as she reached for a tub of lip balm in front of a police lieutenant.

A plea agreement obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal shows Hilton will plead guilty to drug possession and obstructing an officer.

Hilton will serve a year of probation, the newspaper reported. She also must complete a drug abuse program, pay a $2,000 fine and serve 200 hours of community service.

Roger and defense attorney David Chesnoff confirmed the details of the plea deal reported by the Review-Journal. The original felony cocaine possession charge would not have resulted in any jail time.

Roger said he wanted to obtain a pledge from the hotel heiress to stay out of trouble, and said the plea deal accomplished that goal.

"If she is arrested for anything besides a minor traffic violation she will spend a year in jail," Roger said. "There will be no discussion. The court will have no discretion."

Chesnoff said the agreement does not call for Hilton to be assigned a probation officer, meaning she can't break any laws but won't have anyone to report to or check in with.

"Ms. Hilton understands the seriousness of the situation and appreciates the chance she is being given," Chesnoff told The Associated Press. "She has to stay out of trouble."

Hilton initially told police the purse and cocaine were not hers, but claimed some items in the bag, including rolling papers, $1,300 in cash and several credit cards.

She was questioned by police after her boyfriend, Las Vegas nightclub mogul Cy Waits, 34, failed field sobriety tests given by a motorcycle officer.

The couple was stopped in a black Cadillac Escalade after the officer smelled a "vapor trail" of marijuana smoke.

Hilton was banned from two Wynn resorts on the Las Vegas Strip after the arrest, and her boyfriend was dismissed as a nightclub partner.

Hilton briefly faced a marijuana charge in July after a FIFA World Cup match in South Africa, but the case was dropped when a woman who was with her pleaded guilty to possessing the drug.

Hilton is scheduled to appear at 7:30 a.m. Monday before Judge Joe M. Bonaventure, Chesnoff said.

Russell Brand arrested after airport altercation (AP)

LOS ANGELES Russell Brand has been arrested following an altercation with a photographer.

The 35-year-old British actor-comedian was taken into custody Friday at Los Angeles International Airport for a misdemeanor charge of simple battery with bail set at $20,000, according to police. Los Angeles Airport Police spokeswoman Belinda Nettles said the victim, a paparazzo who was not identified, placed Brand under citizen's arrest.

The alleged attack involving the two-time MTV Video Music Awards host and "Get Him to the Greek" star was first reported by TMZ, which posted video of the altercation that occurred as Brand and his fiancee, "California Gurls" singer Katy Perry, were surrounded by paparazzi as they entered the terminal that houses Delta.

Brand's publicists did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

Back in England, Brand has built a reputation for his drug-addled past and hedonistic tendencies, and he's sought treatment for drug addiction and sex addiction. Lindsay Lohan said to fail court-ordered drug test

LOS ANGELES | Fri Sep 17, 2010 7:15pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actress Lindsay Lohan was reported on Friday to have failed a drug test imposed as a condition of her early release last month from a Los Angeles rehabilitation program.

Celebrity news site TMZ.com said the "Mean Girls" actress had tested positive for cocaine in a court-ordered test last week. Under the terms of probation set in August, Lohan would be sent back to jail for 30 days if the reports prove correct.

Lohan's lawyer Ed McPherson told Reuters he had "thus far been unable to confirm any of it, but I am trying to find out."

Us Weekly magazine's website quoted Lohan on Friday as saying "I'm fine. They're all nuts."

The career of the once promising actress was sidelined in 2007 by a drunk driving and cocaine possession charge, erratic behavior and late night partying. Lohan said at the time she was addicted to drink and drugs and went to rehab three times that year.

After violating her probation in the 2007 case, Lohan served two weeks in jail in August, followed by 22 days of a three month residential drug rehab program.

On her release she was ordered to undergo random testing twice a week and attend drug counseling and behavioral therapy classes.

TMZ.com on Friday quoted an unidentified source connected with Lohan as saying; "People with addiction problems don't get better magically, and she's really been making an effort to make herself better."

Lohan has kept a low profile since being released from rehab but Us Weekly said she was seen partying late into the night last weekend at a New York night club.

Lady Gaga urges repeal of gay military ban

By Zorianna Kit

LOS ANGELES | Fri Sep 17, 2010 5:39pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Singer Lady Gaga released a video on Friday urging members of the Senate and her "fellow Americans" to help repeal the military rule banning openly gay people from serving in the armed forces.

In her most overt political stance to date, Gaga, 24, described herself as "a voice for my generation" and urged her millions of fans to help overturn the policy which allows gay men and women to serve in the military as long as they keep their sexual orientation private.

The U.S. Senate is expected to vote on Tuesday on whether to begin debate on the annual Defense Department authorization bill, which includes language aimed at ending the Clinton-era "don't' ask, don't tell" policy. The vote is expected to be close. The U.S. House of Representatives has already voted to repeal it.

In the black and white video, which is over 7 minutes long, Gaga sits in front of an American flag wearing a demure dark tie, white blouse and dark blazer.

"I am here to be a voice for my generation," Gaga, 24, said in the YouTube video. "Not the voice of the generation of the senators who are voting, but for the youth of this country -- the generation affected by this law and whose children will be affected."

Calling the law unconstitutional, she urged her fans to call senators in their district. She also asked followers on Twitter to make their own videos supporting equal rights.

"Tweet me your video and I will post them," she wrote.

The Grammy-winning performance artist has both flaunted, and been outspoken on, the topic of sexuality and has openly courted gays and lesbians at her concerts.

Last weekend, she walked the red carpet at the MTV Music Video Awards with four gay veterans as her dates.

Gaga also posted the video on her personal website, her Facebook Fan Page and her Twitter account. The singer, whose hits include "Bad Romance" and "Alejandro", has over 18 million fans on Facebook and more than 6 million followers on Twitter.

Lady Gaga, who burst onto the music scene two years ago, is no stranger to controversy. On Sunday she wore a dress made entirely of raw meat to the MTV awards show and in live shows she has set her piano on fire and smeared herself with fake blood.

Stewart and Colbert plan spoof of Tea Party rally

NEW YORK | Fri Sep 17, 2010 5:56pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - In an apparent spoof of the recent Tea Party rally in Washington, America's leading satirists Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert will hold rallies on the National Mall days before the November election.

Daily Show host Stewart -- who satirizes U.S. political news from a Democratic viewpoint -- announced details of his "Rally to Restore Sanity" on his website on Friday, saying it was for those "who think shouting is annoying, counterproductive and terrible for your throat."

He said he hoped to attract an audience which believes it is only right to draw a Hitler mustache on someone "when that person is actually Hitler" -- a reference to posters seen at Tea Party rallies depicting U.S. President Barack Obama with a Hitler mustache.

The Colbert Report host said his "March to Keep Fear Alive" will be held at the same time. Both rallies are planned for the Saturday before the November 2 mid-term election, October 30 -- a date Stewart insists has "no significance whatsoever."

Colbert said in a statement that he encourages followers to "restore truthiness" in Washington and challenge those who wish "to replace our Fear with reason."

"But never forget -- 'Reason' is just one letter away from "Treason," said Colbert, who spoofs Republican-leaning chat show hosts.

Three weeks ago, conservative pundit Glenn Beck and former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, the de facto leader of the Tea Party movement, held a rally to "Restore Honor."

The event attracted some 200,000 conservatives and but drew criticism for being held on the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr's famed "I have a dream" speech.

NBA star Nash introduces film on his Canadian hero

By Ka Yan Ng

TORONTO | Fri Sep 17, 2010 4:49pm EDT

TORONTO (Reuters) - Steve Nash, a master director on the basketball courts of the National Basketball Association, could have a second career in the making as one behind the camera.

A point guard with the NBA's Phoenix Suns and two-time league most valuable player, Nash ventured into film to tell the story of Terry Fox, a cancer sufferer who inspired Nash and others with his attempt to run across Canada in 1980, despite an amputated leg, to raise funds for cancer research.

"Into the Wind", which was met with a standing ovation and few dry eyes in its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, follows Fox, then 22, as he ran a marathon's distance a day after he had his right leg amputated six inches above the knee.

An artificial limb made of steel and fiberglass was attached to the stump.

Interviews with family and friends and television footage, are interspersed with narrated entries from Fox's journals.

The film, produced by U.S. sports broadcaster ESPN, is intended to bring a new generation of Americans to Fox's story.

"The opportunity to tell it to a relatively new audience was very powerful," Nash said after the screening.

"Most of all, for me, it would just be great if the film can help Terry inspire people like he inspired me," he said. Nash was six years old and growing up in Canada at the time of Fox's "Marathon of Hope."

Initially mostly ignored by the media when he set off from Canada's east coast, Fox's run gained momentum as he pushed westward. Eventually crowds lined the roads to watch the man with the hop-step running gait that has since become ingrained in Canada's national psyche.

After 143 days and 5,373 kilometers (3,339 miles), two-thirds of the way to his goal, Fox was forced to stop running just outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario. His cancer had come back and spread to his lungs. He had raised around C$2 million ($1.9 million).

Fox died nine months later. He is now hailed a Canadian hero and an icon in cancer research.

Nash co-directed the film with his cousin, Ezra Holland. Previously the pair have worked on viral videos for brands such as Nike and online content for CBS Sports.

Nash, who ranks among top players in NBA history for total assists, three-point shooting, does not intend this foray into film to be a one-off.

He and Holland are working on another documentary, this time about Brazilian soccer legend Pele.

The short film will be broadcast on ESPN on September 28. In Canada, it will air on Sunday to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the annual charity run, which is held in more than 40 countries. To date, the Terry Fox Foundation has raised C$500 million worldwide for cancer research.

Jury awards $40,000 in damages in Kid Rock case (AP)

DECATUR, Ga. A suburban Atlanta jury awarded $40,000 Friday to a man who says musician Kid Rock and his entourage beat him and smashed his cell phones during a 2007 fight at a Waffle House restaurant.

Harlen Akins sued Kid Rock, whose real name is Robert James Ritchie, and five members of his entourage over the fight. DeKalb County State Court Judge Johnny Panos on Thursday dismissed two of the defendants.

Akins sought $6,000 in medical fees and an unspecified amount in punitive damages. The jury decided not to award punitive damages, but gave him $40,000 in compensatory damages.

The jury saw a lot of provocation from both sides and couldn't attribute blame completely to either, said the foreman, who declined to give his name.

He said $6,000 was granted for medical expenses, $700 for the market value of the two cell phones, and the rest for pain and suffering.

The damages will be divided among the four remaining defendants based on how much responsibility each was assigned. Kid Rock will pay 15 percent; his personal assistant James Murphy will pay 10 percent; his executive assistant Brian Lang will pay 5 percent; and his guitarist Jason Krause will pay 70 percent.

Krause was assessed more because he threw the first punch, the foreman said.

Akins was in court Friday, flanked by his lawyers, but the defendants were not there. The parties have 30 days to appeal.

Akins' lawyer Eric Hertz reiterated after the verdict that it wasn't about money.

"We feel vindicated and we are very satisfied," he said.

William Horton, a lawyer for Kid Rock and his entourage, said many times during the trial that Akins was just trying to cash in because Kid Rock is rich and famous, and he repeated that Friday.

"As far as we were concerned it was just about money," he said.

The musician and his friends had sought to settle the matter without a trial, but the plaintiff demanded $2.9 million, Horton said.

Hertz said his firm had never demanded that, but it was possible the firm that handled the case before them did.

During five hours of deliberations, the jury asked to see a surveillance video of the fight again and asked the judge several questions.

The musician pleaded guilty in March 2008 to a misdemeanor charge of simple battery stemming from the melee.

The fight began shortly after 5 a.m. on Oct. 21, 2007, after Akins exchanged words with a woman in Kid Rock's party whom he had known for years.

'As the World Turns' stops spinning after 54 years (AP)

NEW YORK It's the last go-round for "As the World Turns."

TV's oldest daytime drama aired its final episode Friday, concluding a run that began in April 1956.

Always full of emotional turmoil, "World" was set in the mythical town of Oakdale, Ill., where there was no shortage of couplings, heartbreak, double-dealing and hairpin plot twists.

CBS announced in December that it was pulling the plug on the New York-based show, which ranked at the bottom of the ratings among network soaps. It wrapped production in June.

Big events this week included Jack (Michael Park) remarrying oft-wed Carly (Maura West). Janet (Julie Pinson) gave birth to her ex-husband Jack's son. Then a DNA test revealed the father of the child was really Janet's betrothed, Dusty (Grayson McCouch). And more joyous news Carly learned she was pregnant with Jack's child.

"I think things turned out exactly the way they were supposed to," Janet said.

Friday's finale found Dr. Bob Hughes (played for a half-century by Don Hastings) in a reflective mood as he prepared to retire at day's end as head of Oakdale Memorial Hospital.

"I was just thinking about this place," he mused "how many patients I've taken care of here, some of them from their first breath (dramatic pause) to their last."

"Good night," said Dr. Bob at the close of the hour, as he doused the lights of his office and took his leave. On his desk, an illuminated globe was seen spinning at the poignant fade-out.

The demise of "World" follows by a year the end of CBS' "Guiding Light" after 72 years on radio, then TV.

On Oct. 18, CBS will fill the slot "World" occupied with "The Talk," a daily chat show whose hosts include Julie Chen and Sharon Osbourne.

Freida Pinto plays object of desire in "Stranger"

By Jennifer Kwan

TORONTO | Fri Sep 17, 2010 2:07pm EDT

TORONTO (Reuters) - When it comes to acting roles, Freida Pinto has yet to meet her tall, dark stranger.

In Woody Allen's wry comedy "You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger", the stranger means different things to different characters: handsome lover to one, possibly death to another.

Pinto, 25, at the Toronto International Film Festival to promote the movie, said her metaphorical stranger is not being able to live a fantasy such as working with Allen and co-star Josh Brolin.

"I was sick to my stomach knowing I had two amazing talents -- Josh Brolin, Woody Allen -- working with me," said the Indian former model, who got her big break in Oscar-winning movie "Slumdog Millionaire".

"I really spent my first days being nervous and being very petrified about which way I was going -- Was I going to get fired? It was this immense amount of pressure and stress," she told Reuters in an interview.

Due out in U.S. theaters on September 22, "Tall Dark Stranger" is the witty tale of a pair of couples whose marriages have gone askew, and reflects Allen's ironic outlook on life and death.

Pinto plays mystery woman Dia, who becomes the muse to struggling novelist Roy, played by Brolin. Oscar-winning actor Anthony Hopkins, Naomi Watts and Antonio Banderas also star.

Once Pinto got over the initial jitters of joining an ensemble of acclaimed actors in her third film, she said her portrayal of Dia came very easily.

"Being the muse and being mysterious is not something I had to work on. It was something that needed to come naturally," she said.

"It's like being thrown into the deep end. You have to learn to swim or you drown. I think I learned to swim."

That "sink or swim" idiom fits Pinto's rapid rise in Hollywood since making her acting debut in director Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire

in 2008.

She also has a second movie -- "Miral" -- at the Toronto festival and three others due for release in 2011.

In director Julian Schnabel's "Miral", Pinto plays the role of a young Palestinian girl growing up in East Jerusalem.

"Miral" gleaned a lukewarm reception from critics, a potentially hurtful experience for a new actor, said Pinto.

"I could be destroyed by it, but it gave me more strength in a way," she said.

"I was blessed that I had two people who believed in me -- and two amazing people Julian and Woody -- straight after the Danny Boyle film. That gives you confidence. My career path has not been bad so I have nothing to complain about."

"Death of a President" director takes on slavery

By Janet Guttsman

TORONTO | Fri Sep 17, 2010 1:37pm EDT

TORONTO (Reuters) - Gabriel Range, who tested the boundaries of good taste with a fictional movie account of the assassination of U.S. President George W. Bush, takes truth as his muse at the Toronto International Film Festival with a drama about a woman enslaved in the London of today.

But the truth behind this year's "I am Slave" is in many ways as strange as the fiction in Range's 2008 movie "Death of a President." There is still slavery in London today, it says, and it's time to do something about it.

"I found it so shocking that a story like this could be contemporary. And I found it very very moving and that's how the journey began," Range told Reuters in an interview on the sidelines of the festival.

"I found it such an affront that such a story like this could take place in London today."

"I am Slave" stars British actress Wunmi Mosaku as Malia, a Sudanese woman wrested from her home as a child and sold as a domestic servant to work -- without pay -- for a family in the Sudanese capital Khartoum.

The family sends Malia to London to work for a cousin, but she's as trapped as she was in Sudan, isolated by her lack of English and her fear that her captors will find some way to hurt her family if she tries to escape.

She is beaten, locked in a dark room and forbidden from looking the family in the eye or speaking to anyone unless she's spoken to first.

"She's very much a slave in her mind. She can't leave, even if the door is unlocked," said Mosaku. "You're a slave in here," she added, pointing to her head.

Somewhat disconcertingly, the movie is voiced entirely in English, something that Range said he thought would help make it more accessible to a wider audience.

The rest of the cast comes from Israel, Morocco and Iraq, with Kenyan first-time actress Natalie Mghoi playing Malia as a child in Sudan's Nuba Mountains of Sudan, scenes that were shot in Kenya.

The story is based on the book "Slave" by Mende Nazer, who is now a British citizen and a human rights activist with a foundation focusing on education for girls in the Nuba.

"It's everybody's responsibility to watch this film," said Nazer, who describes her age as between 29 and 30.

"It's not something that you can be indifferent about. It has a very rich deep message for people to take away with them and to think about it, and something must be done about it, and that's what I'm trying to do."

A British parliamentary report from 2009 says there are at least 5,000 trafficking victims in Britain, most of them in forced prostitution. The report singled out domestic workers as another area of concern.

Copy of Leibovitz's 'John and Yoko' up for auction (AP)

NEW YORK A copy of Annie Leibovitz's famous photo of a nude John Lennon with a clothed Yoko Ono is going up for auction in New York City.

Ex-Kiss drummer raising money for cancer research (AP)

POINT PLEASANT BEACH, N.J. Three years after beating breast cancer a disease that rarely affects men former Kiss drummer Peter Criss wants guys to know it can happen to them, too.

The rock star best known for the ballad "Beth" is participating in a walkathon for the American Cancer Society next month near his home at the Jersey Shore. He wants fans to sponsor him or join the walk themselves.

Criss, who played the Catman with the costumed rockers, asks supporters to register through his website, http://www.petercriss.net.

The Oct. 17 event in Point Pleasant Beach already has raised more than $108,000 for the fight against breast cancer.

The 64-year-old says he's cancer-free and emphasizes there should be no stigma or embarrassment attached to getting the disease as a man.

"It's not an embarrassing thing it's a very important, major thing," he said. "You find something wrong, you have to go to see a doctor immediately. It's not going to go away.

"I was this rock hero I had dolls made of me!" Criss said. "I never thought I could catch anything. And then there it was."

Men account for 1 percent of all breast cancer cases, but about 2,000 men develop it each year, and 440 die from it, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Winfrey chooses Franzen's 'Freedom' for book club (AP)

CHICAGO Oprah Winfrey chose Jonathan Franzen's new book "Freedom" for her book club on Friday, calling it a "masterpiece" nine years after she canceled his appearance on her show when he expressed ambivalence over her endorsement of one of his previous works.

"I am really betting that "Freedom" by Jonathan Franzen will end up being for you, as it is for me, one of the best novels you have ever read," Winfrey said on a live episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" as she announced her 64th book club pick. "When is the last time you heard that? I am not kidding."

In 2001, Winfrey picked Franzen's "The Corrections" for her book club. But then Franzen called some of Winfrey's book club picks "schmaltzy" and worried about his place in the "high-end literary tradition."

But at the same time, he praised Winfrey for making some good choices and for "fighting the good fight." He apologized quickly and repeatedly.

Winfrey's decision tells a story she loves well, one of redemption. It involves a Minnesota family and Winfrey described it to her viewers as a "saga that has everything. It has sex and love, even rock and roll and everything you want in a book."

Released in late August, "Freedom" was virtually canonized by critics before publication and has been topping best-seller lists. Franzen, 51, was the subject of a Time Magazine cover story, titled "Great American Novelist."

The Oprah Book Club logo will appear on new shipments of the novel. "Freedom" had already gone into a second printing, with 300,000 copies in print, and is virtually assured of selling hundreds of thousands of copies.

Attorney: Morgan Freeman, wife finalize divorce (AP)

JACKSON, Miss. Actor Morgan Freeman and his wife have finalized their divorce in Mississippi.

A Tallahatchie County judge entered the divorce decree on Sept. 15, William R. Wright, an attorney who represented Freeman, told The Association Press. Terms of the divorce are sealed, Wright said.

"It was done without a trial," Wright said Friday. "Everybody is glad it's over."

Freeman and his now ex-wife, Myrna Colley-Lee, had separated in December 2007 after 26 years of marriage. The divorce was filed under seal in July 2008.

Wright said both Freeman and Colley-Lee live in Tallahatchie County in northern Mississippi where Freeman has a ranch near Charleston.

Kay Farese Turner of Memphis, Tenn., who represented Colley-Lee, was not immediately available for comment. Colley-Lee is a theater and film costume designer.

The couple married on June 16, 1984.

In November 2009, Freeman settled a lawsuit related to a 2008 car accident that seriously injured him and a passenger. Demaris Meyer filed the lawsuit against the Academy Award-winning actor, claiming Freeman had been drinking the night of the accident and was negligent when the car ran off the side of a rural highway near his home. No charges were filed.

It was not long after the wreck that Freeman's friend, business partner and lawyer, Bill Luckett, told reporters Freeman and his wife had separated and filed for divorce.

Meyer has complained that she was wrongly "labeled as the other woman" after the accident and "accused of having caused the breakup of Mr. Freeman's marriage."

Freeman, 73, won an Oscar for his performance in 2004's "Million Dollar Baby." His screen credits also include "The Dark Knight," "Bruce Almighty," "The Shawshank Redemption" and "Driving Miss Daisy."

Sacha Baron Cohen set for Freddie Mercury biopic (AP)

LONDON "Borat" star Sacha Baron Cohen has been signed up to star in a movie about flamboyant rock star Freddie Mercury, producers said Friday.

Peter Morgan, who wrote "The Queen," is working on a screenplay about the frontman of the band Queen, who died of AIDS in 1991.

The as-yet-untitled film will climax with Queen's barnstorming appearance at the 1985 Live Aid concert in London.

The announcement was made by GK Films, which is producing with Robert De Niro's Tribeca Productions and Queen Films.

Production is due to begin next year.

Founded in 1971 by Mercury, guitarist Brian May, bassist John Deacon and drummer Roger Taylor, Queen scored hits with songs including "We Are the Champions," "We Will Rock You" and "Bohemian Rhapsody."

May told the BBC that the band supports the project.

He said the choice of Baron Cohen, creator of wannabe rapper Ali G, Kazakh journalist Borat and Austrian fashionista Bruno, "will probably be a shock to a lot of people, but he's been talking with us for a long time."

"He's been in on this project since we started talking about it seriously with Peter Morgan a couple of years ago." May said.

Baron Cohen's latest film is Martin Scorsese's "Hugo Cabret."

Author of Carla Bruni book defends sources (AP)

PARIS The co-author of a new book about French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is defending his sources amid a media buzz over a passage that cites Michelle Obama as calling life in the White House "hell."

Mrs. Obama's spokeswoman, and the French Embassy in Washington, have denied the first lady said such a thing.

Author Yves Derai stands by the explosive dialogue, insisting it's based on interviews with "reliable sources." Derai, in an interview with The Associated Press, declined to name his sources, saying it would violate his journalistic principles.

Derai is an investigative journalist who co-wrote "Carla and the Ambitious Ones," along with a political TV journalist. Derai acknowledged the French word used in the passage, "enfer," might not correspond directly with the English word "hell."

Sony hopes Facebook film befriends fans, Oscar

By Kim Masters

Fri Sep 17, 2010 8:16am EDT

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Sony is starting to show the face of "The Social Network," the saga of the founding of Facebook and one of the most buzzed-about films of the season.

The studio has started to screen it, beginning with a select list of friendly journalists. No surprise there.

At the same time, it is positioning the film for Oscar. Along with reporters from fan sites, the guest list at screenings includes awards bloggers.

Sony wants it all for director David Fincher's October 1 release: commercial results and artistic recognition. The studio declines to discuss the carefully orchestrated marketing campaign for the film, but clearly it's chasing the young audience, with spots on MTV emphasizing partying, bling and Justin Timberlake. For older audiences, it's being spun more as "Wall Street," with heavy reliance on quotes from positive reviews.

"I think there is heat on the movie and it's going to work," said a distribution executive at a rival studio.

Sony will need it to work commercially if it wants to be a contender in the awards race, according to one veteran consultant (who hasn't seen the film). Unlike a modest movie like "Hurt Locker," "Social Network" -- with its high-end pedigree and a budget of $40 million or more -- will need commercial traction to engage the Academy.

"The sucker can't bomb," this campaigner said. "It's about Facebook -- about something that has permeated all levels of our culture. ... If it doesn't do business, it failed. It can't come out and tank when everyone knows there's an audience for it. There's nothing worse than promoting a film within the Academy that failed to do what it was supposed to do."

So far, the early reviews on the movie fan sites are positive. Slashfilm raved. CHUD.com called it "absorbing and hilarious and smart."

An executive at a rival studio said Sony is trying to create a snowball effect. "They're showing it to the hard-core geeks first supposedly because they're 'of the Internet,' " he said. "But to get these guys excited, you have to let them be the first to see it. That's all they want, sometimes. So they're all frothing, and when they show it at the New York Film Festival and other places to the older critics, they're going to have to jump on the bandwagon. They don't want to be perceived as uncool."

The campaign consultant concurred: "They're trying to make it something you have to see -- it's hip and if you don't understand it, you're left out."

Sony's biggest challenge, commercially, will be to draw in the increasingly important young female audience, which tends to be driven by word-of-mouth. Young women are big users of Facebook, in fact, but they may not be drawn so easily to the story of its founder's debauchery. So far, the ads on MTV appeal to young men; Sony still needs to reach the young ladies, possibly with ads on cable shows where they congregate.

If in fact the studio manages to generate enough commercial success to give the movie traction with awards voters, the inevitable anti-"Social Network" campaigning will begin -- that the characters in the film are unpleasant, that there's no rooting interest, that watching rich miscreants is not appealing at a time of economic stress.

As the campaign strategist put it, "Facebook is a thing that everyone who's on it loves, but the inventor is this dick."

And the consultant adds that even positive buzz can turn into a problem. "I hate being in that position," he said. "I dread it. They can only go downhill from there unless it delivers on every level."

But the consultant said the film may have an advantage -- perhaps counter-intuitively -- because even the many Academy members who will never see 40 again tend to be plugged into Facebook. Given that, he said, the issue comes down to the film's commercial prospects.

"If it becomes a populist entertainment, they have a shot," he said. "If they come out and don't do business, good luck."

Director admits Joaquin Phoenix documentary a hoax

LOS ANGELES | Fri Sep 17, 2010 1:45am EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Joaquin Phoenix transformed from a clean-cut actor into a bearded, druggy rap wannabe two years ago -- but it seems it was all in the name of art.

His brother-in-law Casey Affleck, who made a documentary about Phoenix's transition from acclaimed actor to bearded, shambolic hip-hop star, admitted on Thursday that it was an act.

"It's a terrific performance, it's the performance of his career," Affleck told the New York Times.

Affleck said Phoenix put his professional life on the line to star in the documentary, "I'm Still Here," which captivated viewers at the Venice International Film Festival this month.

At the event, Phoenix swore it was a genuine documentary despite clear indications on the screen that it was a "mockumentary" poking fun at a narrow-minded public.

The buzz about the documentary began when a bearded Phoenix appeared on David Letterman's chat show in February last year, confused and mumbling.

In the movie Phoenix is at times funny and coherent and at others childish, aggressive and paranoid as he struggles to live with his decision in 2008, which the media greeted with breathless disbelief, to give up acting and take up hip-hop.

The film includes footage of him apparently taking drugs, surfing the Internet for call girls, hosting prostitutes, diving off a stage to attack a heckler and vomiting. It also features rap impresario Sean Combs, who finally agrees to listen to a demo of his hip-hop music.

Affleck has now come clean. Virtually none of it was real, he told the New York Times. Not even the opening shots, supposedly of Phoenix and his siblings swimming in a water hole in Panama. Affleck said that was actually shot in Hawaii with actors. "I never intended to trick anybody," said Affleck.

He acknowledged that Letterman was not in on the joke involving Phoenix who was nominated for an Oscar for his role of Johnny Cash in "Walk The Line."

Phoenix, whose sister Summer is married to Affleck, is due to return to "The Late Show with David Letterman" next week -- and Affleck said this time he would not be in character.

NJ man knows secrets of genuine 'Boardwalk Empire' (AP)

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. While Enoch "Nucky" Johnson was running things in Prohibition-era Atlantic City including booze, hookers and gambling dens a teenager named Ed Devlin was getting a taste of Johnson's real-life "Boardwalk Empire" from the periphery.

Johnson, who will be played by Steve Buscemi in the HBO series that begins Sunday, was the unquestioned boss of the resort, and Devlin won enough of his trust to run some small-time numbers. He also heard the most powerful man in Atlantic City talk about his plans to control the resort, its police force and the state police.

Before he finished high school, Devlin had already learned how to take bets from people and deliver money on time to the bookies, how much northside hookers charged for an encounter and, most of all, the one rule in Atlantic City: never cross Nucky.

"In my world, he was a god," said Devlin, now 89 years old. "Atlantic City was my kingdom, and he was the king."

His high school yearbook lists his name as Edward "Nucky" Devlin a nickname he earned because everyone knew Devlin had the ear of the biggest man in town.

For 30 years, until he was finally sent to prison for tax evasion, Johnson dominated Atlantic City then one of the nation's leading resorts. He controlled not only the Republican political machine that had a stranglehold on government, but also made sure it was what Devlin called "a wide-open town, with gambling, prostitution and booze right out in the open."

Johnson did this by controlling not only the local police department, but by currying enough favor with state authorities so that when the state police had to conduct an obligatory raid from time to time, Nucky would get advance warning. The liquor and gambling equipment were hustled into boats that sped offshore. Hookers were either moved or told to lay low.

It was in this world that Devlin came of age. His father was a local eye doctor who knew most people in town, including Johnson. He introduced his son to the boss, who took a liking to the boy and unfailingly referred to him as "kid."

"Hiya doing, kid? How's things, kid?" Johnson would say every time they met, which Devlin estimated was every other day for at least 10 years.

One night in 1926 when Devlin and his father were waiting for a boxing match to start at the Million Dollar Pier, they saw Johnson stroll in with Harry Moore, the leading candidate for governor of New Jersey.

"I turned to my dad and said, `What's Nucky doing with Harry Moore?'" Devlin recalled. A few days later, Devlin recalled, he asked Johnson, "I saw you at the fights. You were with Harry Moore. He's a Democrat; you're a Republican."

"He says, `Kid, I want to talk to you,'" Devlin said. "So we went into his private office, first door on the left, and he says, `This is a small county. It doesn't have enough votes to control anything. We have to control the Statehouse in order to control the state police. That way they won't come in and raid a place.'"

Like most other Atlantic City residents, young Devlin fell under Johnson's sway, admiring his power, charm and the way he took care of poor or out-of-work families. A household having trouble keeping warm would suddenly find their coal bin filled. A jobless father would be hired for a week or two cleaning up the beach or sweeping streets. Gifts of clothing or food were common and there was no doubting where they came from.

"He took care of people," said Allen "Boo" Pergament, an Atlantic City history buff who was 12 when he met Johnson. "He could have been a thug and demanded things, and people would have responded out of fear. But he was loved and respected because of the way he took care of people. It bought their loyalty."

Pinky Kravitz, an Atlantic City radio host, also knew Johnson, and confirmed that Devlin and the boss were pals. The 83-year-old Kravitz recalled watching Johnson at a community meeting in an African-American neighborhood, where he dispensed largesse.

"He said, `Mrs. Johnson, you need coal? You're going to have a ton of coal tomorrow. Mr. Smith, you need a job?'" Kravitz recalled. "He went around the room calling out the names of people, asking what they needed."

Devlin ran numbers for local bookmakers, taking care to get the picks and the cash to the storefront boss on Kentucky Avenue by 12:15 p.m. 12:30 at the absolute latest before the winning number was announced at 1 p.m. The payoff: 500-to-1. His take as a street-level runner was 15 percent.

"One day, I made 12 dollars," he said. "At that time, the Works Progress Administration was paying $9 a week, $12 if you were politically connected. We had an apartment where the rent was $7 a month.

"I came home on cloud nine that day, a big shot," he recalled. "I had made $12 in a few hours by running numbers."

Devlin also lined up a messenger job with a brothel on North Michigan Avenue.

"If they wanted a blonde or a redhead, I would take the key to the house where they were," Devlin said. "I did very well."

One day, Devlin worked up enough courage to tell one of the hookers he was interested in her services.

"I don't have much money," he told her. "She said, `It's 25 cents.' Those were the days!"

Devlin had no qualms about what he was doing, because everyone else seemed to be doing it, too.

"I accepted that way of life," he said. "I had no chance to think that this was illegal or unconstitutional or against the law; it was part of the community I was raised with from the time I could walk and think."

Devlin went on to own two gift shops on the Atlantic City Boardwalk that remain to this day, with his wife taking care of day-to-day matters.

In Nucky's day, Devlin's uncle, "an ex-Marine who believed in doing things strictly by the book," was an Atlantic City police officer. One day when the two were out together, his uncle saw a car stop and make a U-turn in the middle of the street. Ticket book in hand, he flagged down the offending vehicle, and told the driver he had broken the law.

"You know who I am?" the driver said.

"Yes, Nucky," his uncle said.

Devlin went pale watching his uncle write a ticket to the most powerful man in town.

"Ten days later, I saw my uncle again," Devlin said. "He was no longer a police officer. He had been relieved of his office. My relatives were all mad at him. They said, `What were you thinking, giving a ticket to Nucky Johnson?'"

Rapper T.I. summoned to court after LA arrest (AP)

ATLANTA Rapper T.I. is expected to appear before a federal judge in Atlanta to explain why his probation shouldn't be revoked after his recent arrest in Los Angeles.

U.S. District Judge Charles Pannell Jr. signed the summons for T.I., whose real name is Clifford Harris, on Thursday. The same judge sentenced Harris for firearms violations.

The order lists three possible violations of his bond: possession of ecstasy, testing positive for opiates and associating with a convicted felon.

Pannell did not set a date for the hearing.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's officials say the Grammy award-winning rapper was stopped Sept. 1 on a Hollywood street after making an illegal U-turn. Police say they found several pills confirmed to be a controlled substance.

Jordin Sparks reaches the 'Heights' of Broadway (AP)

NEW YORK You haven't really arrived on Broadway until an image of your grinning face goes up on a massive billboard.

It is a joy Jordin Sparks has yet to savor.

"I haven't gone to Times Square to stand there and actually look at it yet," the 20-year-old singer says of her 34-foot-by-20-foot image that hangs in front of millions of passers-by. "I'm nervous people are going to see me staring at me and then go, 'OK, she's a weirdo.'"

There's little risk of that: Four years after winning "American Idol," Sparks comes across as bubbly but carefully poised as she makes her Broadway debut in the 2008 Tony Award-winning musical "In the Heights."

"It's gone by so fast that I have to literally sometimes tell myself to stop and think about it. Now I have my name on a dressing room on Broadway," she says during an interview in the Richard Rogers Theater. "How did I get from there to here so fast?"

The quick answer is: Beat Blake Lewis for the Season 6 "Idol" crown, put out two CDs, pump out a few huge singles such as "No Air" and "Battlefield," and then find yourself in a meeting with producers who think you might be the perfect person to step into the role of 19-year-old Nina Rosario in the joyous, Latin-laced musical.

"I saw the show and I was just completely captivated. I'd never seen a musical that was so current. I fell head-over-heels in love," she says. "I literally did not take that soundtrack out of my CD player for four months."

The Arizona native says she's enjoying living on her own for the first time and staying put in one place after years of touring. She's moved into a Manhattan apartment with her two small, mixed breed pooches Maggie and Miles and can finally unpack.

It's not an understatement to say Sparks has thrown herself into her new role. Late last month, she pulled a few muscles in her hip and had to held back for four shows while she underwent acupuncture and physical therapy.

The injury happened while she was on stage early in an evening performance of a two-show day. During intermission, she told producers she was having trouble walking. They offered to pull her but she insisted that the show must go on. "I was like, 'No, no. We need to continue the story. That break in the continuum will mess people up.' So I finished the second act," she says.

"When I do something, I just sort of dive in headfirst," she says. "I've never lived here in New York City so I've never walked back and forth from places doing the dancing, different things, all the choreography and eight shows a week my body wasn't used to that."

Sparks admits she's had to work overtime to keep up with the professional hoofers a recent performance showed her growing pains but it's obvious she doesn't need to worry about one thing: her voice. She belts out powerful, crystal-clear notes that would make even Broadway singers envious.

"She unlocks this thing inside of her and it's pretty remarkable to let it wash over you," says the show's director, Thomas Kail. "She's so incredibly prepared and dedicated and wants to be excellent. That's what she brings to everything."

Sparks had hoped one day to bring her voice to Broadway, just not so soon. The daughter of former NFL player Phillippi Sparks, she recalls seeing plenty of shows while her dad played for the New York Giants. Her favorite was "Smokey Joe's Cafe."

"I walk in to the stage door every day and I'm like, 'I get to do this. This is my job,'" she says. "I say that about music as well. I can't believe I get paid for doing what I love to do."

It might not have happened if it wasn't for "Idol," which she says she still watches, and she still votes. This coming season its 10th promises to be very different, with all but Randy Jackson having left the original judging panel and the show facing stiff competition from "America's Got Talent" and Simon Cowell's "X Factor." Front-runners to fill the judges chairs are Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler. (The show will announce the new judges next Wednesday.)

In 2007, Sparks became the youngest winner in the show's history. That led to everything the albums, a tour with the Jonas Brothers, singing for President Barack Obama and winning an American Music Award.

"It still feels like yesterday. I still hear my heart beating in my ears and seeing people clapping and screaming," she says. "I can't wrap my mind around it."

Mirrorball, mistakes: Brandy dreams of `Dancing' (AP)

LOS ANGELES It's the night of the "Dancing With the Stars" premiere, 20 minutes until Brandy and her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy dance live in front of millions, and the singer-actress can't find her performance costume.

Scrambling, she finally locates the dress, but now one of her dance shoes is missing. With time running out, she decides to perform barefoot, but she misses her cue and can't catch up for the duration of the dance.

Then she wakes up.

Brandy has spent several nights dreaming about "Dancing With the Stars," and she confesses her anxious nocturnal sojourn during a rehearsal just days before the season premiere.

"A couple of nights before, I'd been dreaming about the mirrorball," she says, referring to the show's glittery trademark trophy. "So that's good."

But with the 11th season about to begin, her nerves are rising.

"I have a hard time trusting the process and trusting the moment," she says. "It's always coming from a place of wanting to do great."

Chmerkovskiy reassures her. A veteran of eight "Dancing" seasons, he says that if she makes a mistake, he's ready "with plans C, D and F to camouflage it, so you've got nothing to worry about."

The 31-year-old star is set to make her dancing debut Monday alongside her fellow celebrity contestants: Actors David Hasselhoff, Jennifer Grey, Florence Henderson and Kyle Massey; athletes Rick Fox and Kurt Warner; reality performers Audrina Patridge and Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino; singer Michael Bolton; and political daughter Bristol Palin.

After two weeks of working together daily, Brandy and Chmerkovskiy's playful chemistry is clear. He purposely pokes at her sore muscles; she warns that he better not drop her during one of their tricky turns.

"That's like telling Michael Jordan you better make that basket," the pro dancer says.

Their banter continues as they practice the jive at a public dance studio inside a suburban mall. Chmerkovskiy tells the slender singer to extend her foot a little further, and she responds with, "Dude, if I go any further, I'm going to go outside that window."

They run through the moves again and again, and when Brandy finally gets the steps right, she lets out an excited little scream.

"Stop squealing and go," Chmerkovskiy says.

"That was awesome," she tells him. "I landed on the right thigh."

"And I'm moving on," he says. "Do it again."

They continue, and Chmerkovskiy chides his student for overstepping her mark. She blames slippery dance shoes. He scoffs, takes off his Nikes and dances in his socks to show her that she could still control her footwork. Then he slips, his feet sliding out from under him.

"Exactly! Exactly!" she shouts victoriously. "Thank you universe, because this is the first time I've ever been right in rehearsal. ... This is what you did in the dream, when I only had one shoe!"

"Please use that footage," Brandy says to the camera operator capturing their rehearsal.

Chmerkovskiy sighs as they continue.

"Take 743," he says, clapping his hands together like a director's clapboard.

Brandy's appearance on the hit dance show represents a reunion with ABC, where she had her only other televised ballroom-dance experience in the network's updated version of "Cinderella," in 1997. Brandy played the title character, and one of her scenes included a whirl around the ballroom. But that was 15 years ago, she says, and more focused on the facial expressions of her and her prince than the precise movements and proper posture required on "Dancing With the Stars."

"This is brand new to me," she says.

But it's not the only new thing she's got going. The reality show about her family, "Brandy & Ray J: A Family Business," is set to return to VH1 in December. And Brandy is headed back to the studio to work on a follow-up to 2008's "Human."

"Music is my first love," she says. "I love doing both (music and TV). I was born for this."

She also hopes to incorporate her new dance moves and maybe her dance partner into her music videos.

But first, she's got to get over her "Dancing" jitters and get through the season premiere. She and Chmerkovskiy are performing a floaty Viennese waltz that's sure to evoke Brandy's Cinderella days.

"You, Cinderella, prepare for the fairy tale," he says. "It's going to be fantastic."

Brandy takes a deep breath of self assurance, shaking off the anxious dream of the night before.

"I know I'm not going to misplace my dress. I know I'm not going to misplace my shoes," she says. "I'm going to make all of my cues and I'm going to dance with everything I've got."
