Paris Hilton released after cocaine arrest: lawyer

LOS ANGELES | Sat Aug 28, 2010 11:51pm EDT

LOS ANGELES Reuters - Socialite, celebrity TV and Web site favorite Paris Hilton has been released by Las Vegas police after her arrest for possessing cocaine on Friday night, her lawyer said on Saturday.

"Paris Hilton was released this morning on her own recognizance. This matter will be dealt with in the courts, not in the media and I encourage people not to rush to judgment until all of the facts have been dealt with in a court of law.

"There will be no interviews and no more comments at this time," lawyer David Chernoff said in a statement posted on the celebrity website TMZ.com.

Hilton, 29, a reality TV star and a staple of celebrity red carpets, was arrested in Las Vegas after a traffic stop during which police said they found an undisclosed amount of cocaine was in her purse.

Photographers snapped pictures of police arresting Hilton on the busy Las Vegas strip.

It was the second drug-related incident for Hilton in two months. She was detained after a World Cup soccer match in South Africa in July on suspicion of marijuana possession.

Hilton was swiftly released without charge after South African police said the marijuana was in the possession of a friend accompanying Hilton to the soccer match.

In the Las Vegas incident, Hilton was reportedly a passenger in the car. The driver, said to be her boyfriend, nightclub manager Cy Waits, was charged with driving under the influence.

After her release from jail, Hilton sent a message on her Twitter account saying she was going to bed, but not mentioning the arrest. Hiltons publicist did not return calls for comment on Saturday.

TMZ.com, citing sources close to Hilton, said she is saying that the purse in which police say they found the cocaine does not belong to her.

Hilton, the great-granddaughter of Hilton hotels founder Conrad Hilton, has worked as a model, singer, actress, fashion designer and reality TV star. She runs multimillion-dollar businesses based on her name including clothing lines, fragrances and wine.

She famously spent three weeks in a Los Angeles jail in 2007 for violating her probation in an earlier reckless driving charge.

Vapor trail leads to Paris Hiltons Vegas arrest AP

LAS VEGAS Smoke wafting from a Cadillac Escalade on the Las Vegas Strip set off Paris Hiltons latest legal troubles when a motorcycle officer who suspected the smell was marijuana stopped the vehicle and police say a bag of cocaine later fell out of the 29-year-old socialites purse.

Its the second time this year Hilton has been arrested on drug possession allegations, although authorities in South Africa dropped marijuana charges earlier this summer. In 2007, Hilton pleaded no contest to alcohol-related reckless driving and was sentenced to 45 days in jail.

This time, the hotel heiress was with her boyfriend, Las Vegas nightclub mogul Cy Waits, who manages a club inside the Wynn Las Vegas and was driving the black SUV that the officer stopped nearby at 11:22 p.m. Friday.

The officer "followed the vapor trail and the odor of marijuana to the Escalade," police Sgt. John Sheahan said.

As other police arrived and a crowd gathered on the busy neon-lit Strip, Hilton asked to go into the Wynn resort for privacy, Sheahan said.

"Miss Hilton pulled out a tube of lip balm," Sheahan said. "At the same time ... a bindle of cocaine in a plastic bag came out of her purse" in plain view of police in the room.

Police Officer Marcus Martin characterized the cocaine as a "small amount," or a package of the size usually associated with personal use. Police would not specify the weight of the cocaine or whether any marijuana was confiscated.

Hilton was arrested on suspicion of felony cocaine possession. If convicted of the low-grade felony, she would get probation, but any violation of that probation would be punishable by up to one to four years in Nevada state prison.

Waits, 34, was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Misdemeanors are punishable by up to a year in county jail. Police said he owned the 2009 Cadillac.

Hilton and Waits were booked into the Clark County jail, where Sheahan said Hilton was kept handcuffed on a booking room bench, fingerprinted, photographed and released without bail about 2:45 a.m. Saturday.

Waits lawyer, Richard Schonfeld, said Waits posted $2,000 bail Saturday. Waits was released Saturday afternoon.

Sheahan said Hilton was not taken to a cell and received no special treatment on a busy Friday night and Saturday morning at the jail. He said release without bail was common in such cases.

Hilton, a prolific tweeter, didnt mention the arrest on her Twitter site, although less than an hour after she was released her account was updated with a posting that said the actress was in bed watching the television show "Family Guy."

It was unclear if the tweets came from her, were posted by time-release or were sent by someone else. Hilton spokeswoman Dawn Miller wouldnt comment when reached by an Associated Press reporter Saturday afternoon.

Hiltons attorney, David Chesnoff, told The Associated Press on Saturday morning that he was still gathering facts about the arrest.

"This matter will be dealt with in the courts not in the media and I encourage people not to rush to judgment until all of the facts have been dealt with in a court of law," Chesnoff said later in a statement. "There will be no interviews and no more comments at this time."

Schonfeld said he was "troubled by the circumstances" leading to the arrest, but declined to specify his concerns.

"As the case proceeds, a lot of facts are going to come to light that will ultimately lead to exoneration," Schonfeld said.

Court dates for Hilton and Waits were not immediately available. Clark County District Attorney David Roger declined to comment Saturday about the case.

A spokeswoman for Wynn Resorts in Las Vegas did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

Waits and his twin brother, Jesse, are managing partners of the Tryst Nightclub inside Wynn Las Vegas, Drais after hours club at Bills Gamblin Hall & Saloon, and XS The Nightclub at Wynns Encore resort. A spokeswoman for Harrahs resorts declined immediate comment.

Earlier this week, Hilton was in the news when a 31-year-old man allegedly tried to break into her Los Angeles home.

Authorities have said that someone carrying two big knives banged on Hiltons window Tuesday. She posted a photo of the arrest on Twitter and described it as "scary." Nathan Lee Parada faces a felony burglary charge.

Hilton was arrested this summer after the Brazil-Netherlands World Cup match in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, on suspicion of possession of marijuana. The case was then dropped at a midnight court hearing.

Hilton pleaded no contest in 2007 to alcohol-related reckless driving and was sentenced to 45 days in jail. After spending about 23 days in jail, Hilton told CNN host Larry King that the experience caused her to re-evaluate the role partying played in her life. She said she wanted "to help raise money for kids and for breast cancer and multiple sclerosis."

While most famous for her tabloid exploits and reality TV series "The Simple Life," Hilton has appeared in the films "Bottoms Up," "The Hottie & the Nottie" and "House of Wax."

Lennons toilet sells for $14,740 at UK auction

LONDON | Sat Aug 28, 2010 4:51pm EDT

LONDON Reuters - A toilet that belonged to late Beatle John Lennon fetched 9,500 pounds $14,740 at auction on Saturday, around 10 times its estimate, the sale organizers said.

Lennon, who was murdered in New York in 1980, had the porcelain lavatory removed from Tittenhurst Park in Berkshire, southern England, where he lived from 1969 to 1971, and replaced with a new one.

The builders who took away the white and blue lavatory were told to "put some flowers in it or something," according to the auction catalog.

Builder John Hancock stored it in his shed for 40 years until he died recently and the lavatory was sent for sale, British media reports said.

The toilet was among Beatles memorabilia sold at auction as part of the Beatle week festival in Liverpool, the groups native city in northwest England. The pre-auction estimate was 750 to 1,000 pounds.

Anne-Marie Trace, who works at the Beatles Shop in Liverpool which organized the sale, said the high price paid had taken the organizers by surprise.

"I think its the most unusual item weve ever had in our auction," she told Reuters.

The buyer was not identified but Trace said it was likely it was "going overseas."

Paris Hilton arrested on cocaine charge in Vegas AP

LAS VEGAS Paris Hilton was arrested late Friday after a police motorcycle officer smelled marijuana smoke wafting from a black Cadillac Escalade driven by her boyfriend on the Las Vegas Strip, then found cocaine in her purse, authorities said.

A crowd quickly gathered when Hilton and Las Vegas nightclub mogul Cy Waits were stopped about 11:30 p.m. Friday in the vehicle near the Wynn Las Vegas resort, police said.

The 29-year-old celebrity socialite was taken into the hotel "to keep her safe" during the initial investigation, police Lt. Wayne Holman said.

Police Officer Marcus Martin said the motorcycle officer pulled the Escalade over on Las Vegas Boulevard after noticing smoke that smelled like marijuana. Police later found a substance in Hiltons purse that tests showed to be cocaine, Martin said. He didnt say how much of the drug was found.

Hilton was arrested on suspicion of felony cocaine possession.

Waits, 34, was arrested on misdemeanor suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Both were booked into the Clark County jail, where Martin said Hilton was released without bail about 2:45 a.m. Saturday.

Less than an hour later, Hiltons Twitter account was updated with a posting that said the actress was in bed watching the television show "Family Guy," and then that she was going to sleep. It was unclear if the tweets came from her, were posted by time-release or were sent by someone else.

If convicted of the low-grade felony, Hilton would get probation. Any violation of probation would be punishable by one to four years in Nevada state prison.

Clark County District Attorney David Roger declined comment Saturday about the case.

Guns N Roses have set cut short

Guns N Roses singer Axl Rose Singer Axl Rose and the rest of the band turned up on stage an hour late

Guns N Roses had their Reading Festival headlining slot cut short after turning up on stage an hour late.

The US band, led by singer Axl Rose, started their performance at 10.30pm on Friday night 27 August.

Festival organisers say they were given an extra half hour to play.

A statement read: "Guns N Roses wanted to extend the new agreed curfew but were prevented from doing so in order to comply with the entertainment licence issued by Reading Council."

Following the delay, the American rock band were booed when they took to the stage at the Berkshire site.

Despite that they played a set including hits like Sweet Child o Mine, Welcome To The Jungle and November Rain plus tracks from their latest album Chinese Democracy.

DJ Ashba and Axl Rose New Guns N Roses guitarist DJ Ashba left performed with the band

They walked offstage after playing Nightrain from their 1987 debut album, Appetite for Destruction.

When they tried to play Paradise City as an encore the speakers were cut by festival director Melvin Benn.

Video footage shot by fans shows the band playing the song with no guitars and the crowd shouting along despite the lack of sound with Axl Rose singing through a megaphone.

87,000 people are at the festival for the three-day event - most wearing wellies after torrential rain caused muddy conditions.

The rain held off for most of the day but started to fall again at the end of the Guns NRoses set.

Earlier Axl Rose updated Twitter followers saying: "Bkstage at Reading. Tours ON Our apologies 4 any inconvenience. Peace"

Thats after the festival had to deny rumours that Guns N Roses had cancelled their performance after someone hacked into the lead singers account and said the gigs were off.

Paris Hilton arrested on cocaine charge in Vegas omg

LAS VEGAS - Paris Hilton was arrested on the Las Vegas Strip late Friday after police saw a cloud of what they suspected was marijuana smoke wafting from the windows of a black Cadillac Escalade driven by her boyfriend, then found a small amount of cocaine in her possession.

A crowd quickly gathered near the stop on Las Vegas Boulevard near the Wynn Las Vegas resort at about 11:30 p.m. PDT Friday, and Hilton was taken into the hotel "to keep her safe" during the initial investigation, police said.

The 29-year-old socialite and her boyfriend Cy Waits were booked into the Clark County jail, police said. Watch commander Lt. Wayne Holman said Hilton was released early Saturday morning.

Officer Marcus Martin said police found that Hilton had a substance that tests later showed to be cocaine, but he did not say how much of the drug was found. She was arrested on felony cocaine possession charges.

"I am gathering facts, but I caution people not to rush to judgment," her attorney, David Chesnoff, told The Associated Press in a brief telephone interview Saturday morning.

Hiltons manager did not immediately respond early Saturday to telephone calls for comment. Her publicist, Dawn Miller, did not immediately return an e-mail message.

Jail records showed that Waits, 34, remained held pending a court appearance on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Hiltons court date was not immediately available.

The arrest came during a week in which a burglary attempt was made on Hiltons Los Angeles home.

Officials said 31-year-old Nathan Lee Parada faces a felony burglary charge in the Tuesday incident.

Authorities have said that someone carrying two big knives banged on Hiltons window. She posted a photo of the arrest on Twitter and described it as "scary."

Sara Bareilles learning to enjoy mainstream success

Sat Aug 28, 2010 6:48am EDT

LOS ANGELES Billboard - Sara Bareilles is a very nice woman who broke through to musics mainstream by writing songs that sweetly and eloquently tell people precisely where they can go.

Dont be fooled by the video to "King of Anything," the lead single off her sophomore album for Epic, "Kaleidoscope Heart," due September 7. In the clip, which has already attracted upward of 1 million views on Vevo, Bareilles, 31, is wandering through a park in a gauzy tutu and singing with a generous smile. But much like the monster success of "Love Song," a track off her first Epic album, "Little Voice," "King of Anything" is an anthem to sassy assertiveness dressed in a lilting singer-songwriter sheen.

"It was the last song I wrote before we went into the studio, and I was at the point where I started sharing the music with my inner circle and started getting feedback," she says. "I remember having a very vivid realization of, Oh, I forgot that this was a part of it. Everybody gets to tell you what they think about what you do. I could tell I was getting defensive. That song was a little bit of a pep-talk song -- and thats exactly what Love Song was."

"Love Song," released in 2007, sold 3.2 million digital downloads, earned two Grammy Award nominations -- one for song of the year and another for best female pop vocal performance -- and bolstered sales of "Little Voice" to 985,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Mainstream success came to Bareilles swiftly, and shes the first to admit she was unprepared. "I was so precious about every choice," she says. "I was so guarded, and I dont know that I enjoyed it as much as I could have. There were times where I was so fearful and so anxious about the process: Am I doing too much? Am I selling out? Do I look all right? All those things swirl around in your brain. What Im here to do is play my music, and I want to be able to enjoy the process this time."

THE LIVE EXPERIENCE

Bareilles was a fixture on the Los Angeles bar and club scene for years after she graduated from the University of California Los Angeles -- the Fairfax areas premier kosher Chinese restaurant, Genghis Cohen, was a frequent stop -- and shes still most invigorated by playing live. The Obamas are fans -- Bareilles performed at both the G20 Summit and the White House Easter Egg Roll -- and she was on the roster for six Lilith Fair shows this summer, an experience she treasures.

"That was so magical. I feel like I went to female songwriter school," she says. "There was so much negative press about Lilith Fair, and it makes me a little angry. The essence was totally intact. The crowds were small in some of the markets, but we played huge shows of 10,000-15,000 people."

On September 25, Bareilles will start a 30-city headlining tour in Portland, Ore., including stops at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles, Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and Webster Hall in New York. The size of the venues gives Bareilles a chance to have a full band backing her -- her previous headlining tour was acoustic -- and include theatrical stage design elements, she says.

Bareilles live show has spawned several releases: Her iTunes-exclusive "Live Sessions EP" has sold 30,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and she released the CD/DVD "Between the Lines: Sara Bareilles Live at the Fillmore" in 2008.

Besides gabbing on Twitter -- a recent tweet from Bareilles reads, "At home, sick, watching Oprah talk about hoarding. Feeling sicker by the moment. Gotta go buy more stuff" -- shes been documenting the making of "Kaleidoscope Heart" in a video blog on her website.

IN TUNE

Coming off the success of "Love Song" was daunting for Bareilles, who says that she took procrastination to an art form while preparing to write "Kaleidoscope Heart." In her bio for the album, she admits that she spent a significant amount of time shopping for throw pillows at Target in lieu of putting notes on paper.

"I am the tortoise of the Tortoise and the Hare story," she says. "It definitely takes me a little while to process things and make decisions about what I like and what I dont like."

But everything clicked once she sat down with producer Neal Avron, who has worked with Fall Out Boy, Linkin Park and Weezer. "I looked at his discography, and I was like, Fall Out Boy? I dont see how I fit into this at all," she says. "But Neal and I met and it felt like a good fit. He really listened. He has no ego, and I love that quality in someone."

Avron encouraged Bareilles to stay true to her instincts and make "Kaleidoscope Heart" as personal as "Little Voice." Bareilles says the centerpiece song on the album is the second track, "Uncharted."

"I was worrying to a friend about how I was never going to be able to write another song, and I was starting a lot of songs but I couldnt finish any of them," she says. "I was really worried about stepping into the unknown and I didnt know what to expect the second time around ... and that afternoon, I sat down and wrote Uncharted." The title of the album, in fact, comes from a lyric in that song.

For Bareilles, "Kaleidoscope Heart" is another album where the personal becomes public -- but this time around, shes prepared. "Nothing is brand-new to me anymore," she says. "I dont have to be so consumed with learning how to get through it. Im just like, Oh, Ive been here before, so now lets just see how today can be a great day."

The set was stopped briefly after the third song as Doherty, Barat and Hassall left the stage momentarily so the crowd at the front could get some space.

"If anyone goes down look after each other," said Doherty when he returned.

Huge singalong songs included Boys In The Band, Cant Stand Me Now, What A Waster and show closer I Get Along.

The band will now play the main stage at the Reading festival today 28 August.

Arcade headliners

The crowd for headliners Arcade Fire was visibly thinner than The Libertines - perhaps down to competition with NME/Radio 1 stage headliners Pendulum.

However, the Canadian rockers played an impactful 90-minute set on a stage themed around their recent UK number one album The Suburbs.

Pete Doherty The Libertines had to stop their set briefly while the crowd got some space

Other highlights from day one of Leeds included a main stage set from Dizzee Rascal playing with his full live band, The Cribs and Enter Shikari.

Watford punk-band Gallows also played a surprise show under the pseudonym The Rats on the Lock-up stage.
