Tax officials keep Crocodile Dundee in Australia AP

SYDNEY Actor Paul Hogan, star of the "Crocodile Dundee" movie trilogy, has been barred from leaving Australia until he pays a disputed tax bill, his lawyer said on Thursday.

The 70-year-old actor, who currently lives in Los Angeles and first gained a public profile in the United States with his cheerful offer to "slip an extra shrimp on the barbie" in Australian tourism TV ads in the mid 1980s, arrived in Sydney last week to attend the funeral of his mother Florence Hogan.

Hogan was served with an Australian Taxation Office order after landing last Friday that prevents him from leaving Australia until he settles a multimillion dollar tax bill, lawyer Andrew Robinson said.

"These may not be the appropriate circumstances to effectively make Paul a prisoner of Australia," Robinson told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio.

The order was "absolutely devastating" for Hogans wife, "Crocodile Dundee" co-star Linda Kozlowski, and their 12-year-old son Chance, both of whom remained in Los Angeles, Robinson said.

Australian tax and crime investigators have fought Hogan in a five-year legal wrangle in Australian and U.S. courts to investigate evidence that he used offshore bank accounts to conceal earnings since his low-budget "Crocodile Dundee" movie became an international hit in 1986.

Tax authorities last month claimed Hogan owed tax on 38 million Australian dollars $34 million in allegedly undisclosed income. The exact tax bill has not been disclosed.

Hogan has denied any wrongdoing and disputes the tax bill. He has never been charged with tax evasion.

The Australian Tax Office refuses to comment due to a policy of not discussing individual cases.

Robinson said lawyers are negotiating with tax authorities to have the order revoked.

"Those discussions are ongoing. We are hoping that they will result in an arrangement that will allow him to go back to his wife and son," Robinson said, without elaborating.

Calif. delays Bo Derek confirmation to horse board omg

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The California state Senate has delayed confirming actress Bo Derek to a commission that oversees horse racing and pari-mutuel wagering at racetracks in California.

A spokeswoman for Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg says the delay comes because the Democrat from Sacramento wants more time to consider all four of Gov. Arnold Schwarzeneggers appointees to the racing board.

The four can keep serving on the seven-member commission until October without Senate approval.

Derek is an animal rights activist and horse lover who owns a pet care products company.

The Senate Rules Committee also delayed the consideration of horse racing commissioner David Israel, a writer and TV producer whose credits include "The Untouchables" and "Midnight Caller."

Review: Rob Reiners nostalgic Flipped AP

"Checkered" would be too kind of a way to characterize Rob Reiners recent filmography as a director. His last decade has included the romantic comedies "Rumor Has It..." and "Alex & Emma," and his last film, 2007s "The Bucket List." Its been a while since his incredible start in the `1980s: "This Is Spinal Tap," "The Sure Thing," "Stand by Me," "The Princess Bride" and "When Harry Met Sally..."

Reiners latest, "Flipped," has been billed as a return to form for the director and a companion piece to "Stand By Me." Like that film, "Flipped" is a coming-of-age ode to youth cloaked in mid-century Americana the early 1960s.

Its thus a kind of film thats nostalgic for nostalgia. Theres charm here and some honest observations of adolescence. But theres also a willful, cloying datedness to the movie like a lost episode of "The Wonder Years" or an "Archie" comic strip.

"Flipped" and its `50s, `60s jukebox soundtrack opens with Curtis Lees "Pretty Little Eyes" and a close-up of young Juli Baker Morgan Lily as 7-year-old old Juli, Madeline Carroll for most of the film.

Shes there on Bonnie Meadow Lane to greet her new neighbors moving in, and she immediately falls for Bryce Loski Ryan Ketzner as young Bryce, Callan McAuliffe predominantly and his "dazzling eyes." He responds by hiding behind his mother, and continues to go to extremes to avoid Juli: "My life had become a minefield," he says.

The film tracks these two through childhood, spending most of the time at 13-years-old, when Bryce is beginning to soften to Julis long held crush.

Reiner co-wrote the script with Andrew Scheinman a producer from many of Reiners best, adapting Wendelin Van Draanens 2001 young adult novel. Though Reiner has shifted the books present day setting, he has kept its central device: switching back and forth between the perspectives of Bryce and Juli, each narrating their version of the same events. Reiner flips the image with a "whoosh"

Perspective is the plaything of "Flipped." Juli idealistic and preternaturally wise keeps a sacred perch atop a neighborhood sycamore tree. Bryces family Anthony Edwards plays his cynical father, Rebecca De Mornay his kinder mother judges Julis family Aidan Quinn as her likable father, Penelope Ann Miller as her mother for their ugly front lawn. Bryce comes to see Juli differently after his grandfather John Mahoney, observing his late wife in her, rhapsodizes that shes "iridescent."

The strength of "Flipped" is in its trueness to humdrum adolescence. Its filled not with extravagant dramas, but instead portrays how seemingly minor happenings take on grand meaning: the tragic tearing down of the cherished tree, the terrifying formality of a sit-down dinner, the frightening awkwardness of nearly everything.

But the "flipped" device becomes a contrivance that doesnt hide the movies lack of emotional momentum. Though it makes clumsy stabs at lifes difficulties with a mentally retarded brother-in-law and an out-of-place bit of domestic violence, the film lacks the darkness of "Stand By Me" and its jokes, too. It relies too much on "Leave it to Beaver" period fetishizing: bicycles on the front lawn, neatly parted hair, baseball pennants on a boys wall, white people everywhere.

But among the frequently loud, chaotic films aimed at young adults, "Flipped" is a mostly welcome if still somewhat disappointing inversion.

"Flipped," a Warner Bros. Pictures release, is rated PG for language and some thematic material. Running time: 90 minutes. Two stars out of four.

LOS ANGELES Reuters - Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola is to get a lifetime achievement Oscar to add to his stack of five Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said on Wednesday.

Coppola, 71, who also wrote and directed Vietnam War movie Apocalypse Now and the 1974 thriller The Conversation, will receive the Irving Thalberg Memorial Award. It will be handed out at a dinner in November in Los Angeles, ahead of the main Oscar ceremony in February 2011.

Lindsay Lohan hopes for new life after rehab, jail omg

LOS ANGELES Reuters - Fresh out of rehab and keen for a new beginning, Lindsay Lohan was ordered on Wednesday to continue drug counseling, submit to random testing and remain in Los Angeles until at least November 1.

A Beverly Hills court judge said the actress, who was released two months early from a residential rehab program, must be tested twice a week for drugs and alcohol and attend behavioral therapy classes twice a week.

Any positive results from the random drug and alcohol tests could see her back in jail for 30 days, Superior Court judge Elden Fox said, setting out new probation rules for Lohan.

Fox ordered another hearing on November1, at which point Lohan would be allowed to leave Los Angeles if all goes well.

Lohan, 24, was whisked out the back door of a Los Angeles rehab unit on Tuesday just 22 days into a three-month program ordered by the court for violating probation in a 2007 drunk driving and cocaine possession case.

The Mean Girls actress was released from jail earlier this month after serving 13 days of a 90-day sentence.

She is looking forward to beginning anew and having a productive life and schedule, Lohans lawyer Shawn Chapman Holley told reporters after Wednesdays hearing, which Lohan did not attend.

She has changed. She is healthy, clear-headed positive and looking forward, the lawyer said, adding that Lohan has complied with all that has been asked of her.

Media reports have said that Lohan, whose movie career has foundered over the past three years, could command up to $1 million for her first post-rehab and post-jail interview, while her fee for appearances at red carpet events in Los Angeles and New York could range from $25,000-$100,000.

She is also expected to receive a flood of offers for TV work. Donald Trump said earlier this week he had been discussing a possible appearance on the next Celebrity Apprentice reality competition show with Lohan, but had not yet made a decision.

Lohan was released from rehab early because doctors treating her felt that a 90-day stay was unnecessary, Holley said. They advised the court that outpatient care would be more beneficial, and would allow Lohan to resume work.

Holley could not comment on media reports that Lohan had previously been misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

She is now looking forward to continuing therapy as an outpatient that will allow her to move forward in her work and life, the lawyer said.

Lohan was considered one of Hollywoods most promising actress with movies like Mean Girls and The Parent Trap but in the past two years she has been hitting the headlines repeatedly for nights on the town and bizarre behavior.

Lohans legal troubles have delayed shooting on her next movie in which she will play 1970s porn star Linda Lovelace. She was last in movie theaters with the 2007 flop I Know Who Killed Me.

Will tough times trigger corporate art selloff? AP

LONDON Corporations worried about the bottom line are taking a look at their office walls.

Over decades, many of the worlds wealthiest banks and companies have built up art collections, rich in modern masters, that are the envy of many museums. Now, some are selling off works that adorn offices and boardrooms some from choice, but others to pay off hungry creditors.

The latter category includes collapsed bank Lehman Brothers, whose multimillion-dollar collection of works by Damien Hirst, Gerhard Richter and others is going under the hammer next month.

Over the last five or six years weve dealt with more and more corporate as well as private clients, said Saul Ingram, head of European corporate art services at Sothebys auction house.

Obviously there have been economic changes in the last couple of years, and I think that has heralded a change in attitudes that these collections need to be trimmed, to focus on quality.

Cathy Elkies, head of private and corporate collections at Christies, also says she has seen an increase in the corporate side of the business, and expects it to continue.

In some cases, organizations are editing and refocusing their collections, she said. Others are looking to completely divest themselves of their art offerings.

Corporations collect art for a variety of reasons, of which turning a profit is often the least important. Some companies like to see supporting emerging artists as a form of corporate social responsibility, or philanthropy works can be lent to museums and galleries for shows.

Others use art to flaunt their corporate wealth. Fred Goodwin, former chief executive of the once high-flying but now state-owned Royal Bank of Scotland used to boast about the David Hockney in his office.

Sometimes, art is used to enliven the work environment. Half a century ago, industrialist Alexander Orlow adorned the walls of his Turmac tobacco factory in the Netherlands with bright abstract works inspired by the theme joie de vivre to cheer his workers.

British American Tobacco later acquired the company and closed the factory. In March, BAT sold more than 160 of the artworks at auction for 13.6 million euros.

We want our offices to be an interesting and stimulating environment, said Robert Korzinek, a fine art underwriter at Hiscox, which is both an art insurer and a collector, with a trove of contemporary works by Gavin Turk, Grayson Perry and others. Its aimed at stimulating our staff, and stimulating our guests.

Around the world, companies are sitting on artistic riches that the public seldom sees. The JP Morgan Chase Art Collection, founded by David Rockefeller in 1959, has 30,000 pieces, including works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cindy Sherman and Andy Warhol.

In Britain, the banks RBS, HSBC and Barclays all have large caches of art unlike BP PLC, which despite drawing protests from environmentalists accusing it of using art sponsorships to whitewash its oil-stained image, doesnt have a large corporate collection of its own.

In certain of our buildings around the U.K. and elsewhere there are pieces of art, said BP spokesman David Nicholas. But there are also many, many photos of oil platforms.

Germanys Deutsche Bank began collecting art in the 1970s and now has a trove of more than 56,000 works, by artists including Joseph Beuys, Henri Matisse, Nan Goldin, Jeff Koons and Lucian Freud, displayed on the walls of its offices and branches in 48 countries.

When companies go under, it can trigger an art market bonanza. In December, bankruptcy administrators of troubled Italian airline Alitalia sold a collection of Futurist artworks for 1.2 million euros.

In June, Sothebys sold 1,000 photographs by Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange and other lens masters as part of a bankruptcy court-approved sale of the collection of defunct camera-maker Polaroid.

The tradition of corporations buying art in good times and selling it in bad stretches back decades. One pioneer was IBM president Thomas Watson, Sr., who amassed works by Frida Kahlo and other artists to decorate the IBM pavilion at the 1939 World Art Fair in New York. In the 1990s, a cash-strapped IBM sold its collection through Sothebys for $31 million.

Other sales have been even bigger. In 1989 a pension fund for British railway workers, which had been buying art as an investment for years, sold its collection for $99 million. In 1998, the Readers Digest corporate collection sold for $93 million.

Judd Tully, editor-at-large of Art and Auction magazine, says were unlikely nowadays to see big companies selling off artworks in bulk because of the negative publicity it would generate.

It raises a red flag Theyre selling their art collection, they must be going broke, he said.

More likely, companies will sell selected high-value works, with the money often channeled back into corporate art collections.

In June, Germanys HypoVereinsbank sold a blue sponge painting by Yves Klein from its collection through Sothebys for 6.2 million pounds.

When Germanys Commerzbank took over Dresdner Bank in 2009, it also acquired Alberto Giacomettis sculpture Walking Man, which became the most expensive artwork ever when it was sold at Sothebys in London in February for 65 million pounds.

Next months Lehman Brothers auctions in at Sothebys in New York and Christies in London are expected to raise $12 million for the banks creditors a significant sum, though only a tiny fraction of the $613 billion in debts held by Lehman when it collapsed in September 2008, helping trigger a global financial meltdown.

Korzinek, the underwriter, said he expected interest in the sale to be high and not just because of the quality of the art.

Itll be interesting to see whether the Lehman provenance increases the value of the collection, he said. There will be some who will see these not just as works of art, but a chance to buy a memento mori of the credit crunch.

News Year Eve no-show costs singer Ne-Yo $156,000 AP

BALTIMORE A Maryland judge has ordered R&B singer Ne-Yo and his booking agent to pay more than $156,000 in damages because the performer failed to appear at a 2008 New Years Eve concert in Washington state.

Anne Arundel County Circuit Judge Philip Caroom ordered the payment Tuesday after a four-day trial in late July and early August.

Promoter Kenyohn Clark sued Ne-Yo, whose real name is Shaffer Smith, and promoter Mike Esterman, who is based in Maryland. The judge ruled in favor of Clark, who claimed that Esterman misled him and failed to return a $95,000 deposit.

Court documents show Ne-Yo testified at trial that he knew in his heart of hearts that the deposit should have been returned.

Jason Brino, Clarks attorney, says his client was basically public enemy No. 1 after the botched concert and abandoned the promotion business to take a job as a military contractor. Attorneys for Ne-Yo and Esterman did not respond to messages seeking comment.

Paisley, Dickens help install circle in Opry stage AP

NASHVILLE, Tenn. As it turns out, the circle is unbroken.

Brad Paisley and Little Jimmy Dickens helped a handful of construction workers install the circle in the center of the Grand Ole Opry House stage Wednesday after flood waters nearly destroyed the precious piece of country music history. The two then performed the Opry standard, Will The Circle Be Unbroken?

That is a classic song thats been sung here for generations and its taking on new meaning with all of this, Paisley said.

Officials announced the Opry House will reopen to the public with a star-studded performance Sept. 28 and the Oprys 85th anniversary celebration will go on as scheduled in October.

Were having a party, Opry president Steve Buchanan said.

The circle, made in 1974 from a part of the old stage from the Oprys former home at Ryman Auditorium, was submerged in 46 inches of water during the May flood that damaged the Opry house and the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Resort in Nashville.

Many musicians and fans consider the circle the heart of country music. The wood carries scuffs from the boots of the genres biggest stars and is a destination for aspiring singers from all corners of the world.

This is absolutely the one place that matters more than any other in country music, Paisley said.

Buchanan said the 6-foot circle of oak buckled but proved to be sturdier than the modern Opry stage. It was refurbished by Nashvilles CC Cabinet Inc., and is now surrounded by a dark brown teak that helps the lacquered circle stand out under stage lights.

Paisley said hes amazed at how far the reclamation project has come since the days following the flood, which caused more than $2 billion damage in Nashville alone.

When I first walked in here everything you see including the rafters and the very top pews were covered in a sort of brown film from the dried mud that had become dust and it was horrendous looking, he said. I didnt know how they were ever going to get it clean and rebuilt and all of these things that needed done.

Seven cameras will be positioned in different backstage areas to capture star reactions, candid moments, and celebrities about to take the stage, NBC said.

There will also be a thank-you camera to allow winners to continue to express themselves after they walk off the stage.

Dark musical comedy Glee goes into the Emmy Awards with a leading 19 nominations, and will vie with Modern Family and three time champion 30 Rock for the coveted best comedy series trophy.

Two-time winner Mad Men is out in front in the drama category with 17 nominations, but faces a challenge from cult sci-fi favorite Lost, and serial killer drama Dexter.

Fallon, who has his own late night TV comedy and talk show, is hosting the event for the first time. But he gave few specifics about the show except to say he will embrace all the fun, interesting things that happened in television this year.

As to which stars might be participating in funny bits with the comedian, Fallon hinted at a few names, calling former Golden Girls actress Betty White a classy lady and a good sport. White, 88, picked up her 5th career Emmy last week for hosting an episode of Saturday Night Live.

Id like for people to be surprised, said Fallon. Nobody wants to know the ending of Lost after the first episode. You want to be surprised.

Major Garrett leaving Fox for National Journal AP

NEW YORK Fox News Channel chief White House correspondent Major Garrett said Wednesday hes leaving the network after eight years to join the National Journal as a congressional correspondent.

Garrett, who worked at the Washington Times, U.S. News & World Report and CNN before joining Fox in 2002, said it was a return to his roots in print journalism.

Ive been seen, Ive been heard, he said. I appreciate that. I just want to be read now.

Fox named no replacement, saying his duties will be taken up its other White House reporters, Wendell Goler and Mike Emanuel. Garrett will leave Fox at the end of next week.

Hes leaving only a month after getting new real estate. Fox was granted a coveted front-row seat in the White House briefing room after the resignation of Helen Thomas from Hearst News Service.

Garrett said Fox promoted me every step of the way and his visibility at the top-rated news network helped him land the new job. He called himself a conscientious objector last fall when his network and the Obama administration were essentially at war following the administrations accusation that Fox was a wing of the Republican Party.

Garrett, who landed an interview with Obama in November that signaled a thaw in the relationship, said the political controversy that often swirled around his network had nothing to do with his leaving.

If you cant swing it in this business youll be found out rapidly and you wont survive, he said. All I ever tried to do, whether I was at CNN or U.S. News or Fox, was to do the best reporting I can and let that speak for itself.

LONDON British singing sensation Susan Boyle said Wednesday she feels humbled and honored by the opportunity to sing for Pope Benedict XVI during his tour of Britain.

The unlikely pop star who shot to global fame after she sang on the TV show Britains Got Talent will perform hymns and sing with an 800-strong choir at an open-air papal Mass in Glasgows Bellahouston Park on Sept. 16, the Roman Catholic Church said.

Boyle, 49, will also sing I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables. Her rendition of the song on the talent show has been viewed millions of times on the Internet.

She told Scotlands The Daily Record newspaper on Wednesday that the invitation to sing for the pope is my greatest dream come true.

Ive always wanted to sing for His Holiness and I cant really put into words my happiness that this wish has come true at last, she told Scotlands Daily Record newspaper. I am humbled and honoured by this invitation and I hope I can do my best.

Benedicts four-day trip will be the first papal visit to Britain since Pope John Paul II in 1982.

His itinerary also includes an address in Parliament and the beatification of 19th-century Catholic convert Cardinal John Henry Newman.

Boyle will sing for the pope the hymn How Great Thou Art, as well as a farewell song when the pontiff leaves Glasgow for London.

What a Wonderful World songwriter Weiss dies AP

OLDWICK, N.J. George David Weiss, who helped write chart-topping pop hits including Cant Help Falling in Love and What a Wonderful World, has died. He was 89.

He died Monday of natural causes at his home in Oldwick, N.J., his wife, Claire, said.

Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley and many other big-name artists recorded compositions written or co-written by Weiss, whose career choice greatly disappointed his mother. She wanted him to become a lawyer.

A Juilliard School of Music graduate who played the violin, piano, saxophone and clarinet, Weiss was a military bandleader in World War II. He soon gained wide recognition as a songsmith with success over the next few decades.

Among the notable compositions he wrote or co-wrote were Cant Help Falling in Love, recorded by Elvis Presley; The Lion Sleeps Tonight, recorded by the Tokens; What a Wonderful World, recorded by Louis Armstrong; Surrender, recorded by Perry Como, and Oh What It Seemed to Be by Frank Sinatra.

He also collaborated on several Broadway musicals, including Mr. Wonderful, which starred Sammy Davis Jr., and Maggie Flynn, featuring Shirley Jones and Jack Cassidy.

He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1984. He also was president of the Songwriters Guild of America from 1982 to 2000 and often testified before government agencies, mostly on copyright issues.

By Eric Anderson

PARAMUS, N.J. -- Several hours after Elin broke her silence to People magazine Wednesday morning about her relationship with Tiger Woods, the golfer also spoke candidly about his scandal, addressing his life on and off the course with reporters following his practice round at The Barclays tournament in Paramus, New Jersey.

Its a sad time in our lives. And, you know, were looking forward in our lives [to] how we can help our kids as best we possibly can. Thats the most important thing, Tiger told reporters.

The Barclays marks Tigers first tournament since his divorce with Elin was finalized on Monday.

Tiger, who has struggled on the course since returning to the game in April, admitted it hasnt been easy to focus on his profession given his personal problems.

At times, it was difficult. You try to block it out as best you possibly can and focus on a shot, but at times it certainly was, Tiger added. Its one of those things where, its a sad time and were going through it right now and as far as my game and practicing, thats been secondary. Were trying to get our kids situated to our new living conditions and how thats going to be and thats where our focus is at right now.

When asked if he had any regrets in the wake of his admitted infidelity scandal, the worlds number one golfer said he never intended to bring this type of drama to his family.

You dont ever go into a marriage looking to get divorced. Thats why it is sad, he noted. My actions certainly led us to this decision. Ive certainly made a lot of errors in my life and thats something Im going to have to live with.

However, Tiger claimed he has found some good in the events of the past nine months, which began with his publicized Thanksgiving night car crash.

You have to find the positives, he told the press. Even though there are a lot of negatives, I think thats actually a good thing because I learned a lot about myself and how I can become a better person.

As for Elin, who told People magazine she has been through hell and admitted she never suspected her ex-husband was cheating, one reporter asked if Tiger still loved the former Swedish model.

I wish her the best in everything, Tiger said of Elin.

Henson donates original Kermit to Smithsonian AP

WASHINGTON The original Kermit the Frog, his body created with an old dull-green coat and his eyes made of pingpong balls, has returned home to the nations capital, where the puppet got his start.

The first Kermit creation from Jim Hensons Muppets collection appeared in 1955 on the early TV show Sam and Friends, produced at Washingtons WRC-TV. Hensons widow Jane Henson on Wednesday donated 10 characters from the show to the Smithsonians National Museum of American History.

She said the original characters provided five minutes of fun each night after the local news.

I think people realized that if you put Kermits face up there, it was just as powerful, Jane Henson, 76, said. We were mostly just doing it to entertain ourselves.

The Hensons attended the University of Maryland and got into the TV business with Willard Scott and other pioneers while in college. Their connection to the area makes the Smithsonian a perfect home for Hensons original puppets, friends said.

Its not just the puppets coming home, but in a way its Jane and Jim coming home, said Arthur Novell, executive director of the nonprofit Jim Henson Legacy in New York City. They started their careers, their lives in Washington.

Even though they were in Washington, Kermit deliberately did not do politics or dabble in religion, Jane Henson said.

The Smithsonian already has a familiar Kermit the Frog puppet made famous on Sesame Street and The Muppet Show. But the original Kermit was more lizard-like, and a duller green. His body was made from an old coat thrown out by Hensons mother.

Some of the other early Muppets donated to the museum include the puppets that inspired Cookie Monster and Oscar the Grouch, as well as Sam from Sam and Friends. The puppets mostly mimed and would lip-sync to popular music.

Their first hit was Ive Grown Accustomed to Your Face, by Rosemary Clooney. Donning a wig, Kermit took the lead as Kermina, Jane Henson said. In 1969, Kermit made it big and joined Sesame Street.

Curator Dwight Blocker Bowers said the Muppets will be a boon for the museums collection.

It certainly shows the Muppets at the beginning of the career of a large family of entertainers, he said. More than anything, I think it shows the genius of Jim Henson.

Bowers said the museum plans to have the original Muppets on display by November in the pop culture gallery.

Visitors will recognize the original Kermit, though he didnt have his trademark collar and webbed feet. But they probably wont recognize the other characters, so the museum will help introduce them, Bowers said. Future plans call for adding clips of their early shows.

A traveling Smithsonian exhibit of Muppets opens Sept. 24 at Chicagos Museum of Science and Industry.

Novell, who was Hensons publicist for more than 20 years, said the puppeteer was a history buff and fond of the Smithsonian.

Other puppets from Hensons collection will eventually be given to the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta to create a Henson gallery there, perhaps as soon as 2014, Novell said.

Still, the Hensons plan to give the Smithsonian about a dozen more puppets in the years to come, possibly including a Miss Piggy to join her boyfriend, Kermit. Part of that will depend on plans by the Walt Disney Co., which has owned rights to the Muppets since 2002.

We would like very much to get them out while theyre still in relatively good condition, Jane Henson said. I think when you grow up in Washington, you get the feeling that everything important in the country goes to the Smithsonian.

Wheres Emmy? Past winners reveal hardwares home AP

LOS ANGELES Jon Stewart once joked that he would use his Emmy statuette to prop up the sinking foundation of his house.

Most Emmy winners, though, tend to keep their trophies in a special place indoors.

As nominees gear up for Sundays 62nd annual ceremony, a look at where past winners keep their coveted hardware:

Four-time winner Helen Mirren Prime Suspect in 1995 and 2006; The Passion of Ayn Rand in 1999 and Elizabeth I in 2005: Ive got one in England and Ive got one here in the United States, and I guess ... I dont know where it is.

The one that I have here is, actually, in my office in New York. But the one in England I think its in my living room. I cant remember.

Jennifer Aniston, who won in 2002 for Friends: She had kept that Emmy and another award on a shelf in her office. I thought, How do I make good use of them? So, theyre bookends.

Bette Midler, whose Emmys include a 1992 trophy for outstanding individual performance on the penultimate airing of The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson: My three Emmys are in the city, in New York, in my home. I dont display them. I just have them in a cupboard somewhere. Im very proud of them. But the thing that Im most proud of is my Johnny Carson. I have a photograph of me and Johnny Carson, the last night. And thats the only thing I display.

Wayne Brady, who won an Emmy in 2003 for Whose Line Is It Anyway?: I keep it downstairs in my library. And I keep it there because I visit my books all the time, because Im an avid reader. ... I know that some people will give you the modest, I use it as a doorstop. No, I earned that

Holland Taylor, who won in 1999 as outstanding supporting actress on The Practice: Well, at one time, I, with great arrogance, actually did use it as a doorstop. And somebody said, Holland, thats disgusting. And I suddenly saw that it was. ... So, it now is on a little shelf with family pictures in my bedroom.

Shohreh Aghdashloo, who won for supporting actress in a miniseries or movie for House of Saddam in 2008: My Emmy keeps moving. At first it was in my studio, where I work. Then people told me, You should bring it to the living room, where people can come and see it and touch it and hug it. Dont be so selfish. So I took it there. Then a friend of mine came and said, No. No. No. Keep it in your bedroom, so when you wake up, youll see it and realize how much you have achieved. So, the Emmy keeps moving all the time, and I let people touch it, hug it and feel it.

Matthew Weiner, who has won four Emmys as executive producer and writer of Mad Men in 2008 and 2009 and two for The Sopranos: I keep them on top of the piano in the living room, and then, if we have a party, I hide them. Why? I dont know. Its kind of ostentatious at a certain point. But he adds, I dont hide them out of shame.

Janie Bryant, who won an outstanding costume design Emmy in 2009 for Mad Men: Well, its very high on a shelf in my living room. And it has a few cobwebs, Im sure. I guess I need to dust it off once in a while.

HIV star should not be jailed

An HIV-positive German popstar accused of infecting a former partner should not be jailed, prosecutors have said.

In closing arguments, prosecutors suggested Nadja Benaissa, 28, should be given a two-year suspended sentence.

Ms Benaissa, from girl band No Angels, admits having unprotected sex, but denies deliberately infecting anyone.

The court, in the central German city of Darmstadt, is expected to give its verdict on Thursday. If found guilty, she could be jailed for 10 years.

Cowardly act

At the start of her trial last week, she said she was sorry from the bottom of my heart for not warning her ex-boyfriend she was HIV-positive.

He says he was infected by her, and she is accused of causing bodily harm.

Ms Benaissa is also accused of attempted bodily harm for having sex with two other men, who were not subsequently infected.

She said she had not told anybody about her disease because she was afraid of the consequences for her career - which she conceded was a cowardly act.

She claimed she had been told by doctors that the risk of passing on the virus had been practically zero.

Ms Benaissa was arrested in Frankfurt last year, shortly before she was due to perform a solo concert, and spent 10 days in custody.

No Angels were formed in 2000 on the international TV show Popstars, before recording a series of hits and emerging as Germanys most successful girl band.

They re-formed in 2007 and competed in the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest, finishing 23rd.

Ex-wife of Tiger Woods breaks silence

NEW YORK | Wed Aug 25, 2010 1:13pm EDT

NEW YORK Reuters - The now ex-wife of Tiger Woods has broken the silence she maintained through the ordeal of dealing with the torrid sex scandal that engulfed their marriage, saying she has been through hell.

Elin Nordegren spoke to People magazine in an interview published on Wednesday, two days after she and Woods issued a statement confirming their divorce, which had been widely anticipated for months after his public confession of infidelity.

Ive been through hell, the Swedish-born former nanny told the publication. Its hard to think you have this life, and then all of a sudden -- was it a lie? Youre struggling because it wasnt real. But I survived, it was hard, but it didnt kill me.

Nordegren, 30, who met Woods at the age of 21 while minding children for a Swedish golfer but is now studying psychology, said she never suspected the affairs that Woods, reputed to be the worlds wealthiest sports star, admitted to and publicly apologized for in February.

Im so embarrassed that I never suspected -- not a one. For the last three and a half years, when all this was going on, I was home a lot more with pregnancies, then the children and my school, she said.

Woods, who has won 14 major championships, returned to the game in April after losing up to $35 million in sponsorship revenue as his private life unraveled over allegations that surfaced in late November and December about affairs between him and several women.

The revelations surfaced after a middle-of-the-night car accident at the couples luxury Florida home where Woods crashed into a tree and a fire hydrant. Nordegren told police she smashed the cars back window with a golf club to get him out.

Nordegren told People that she did not hit Woods on the night of the car crash.

There was never any violence inside or outside our home, she said. The speculation that I would have used a golf club to hit him is just truly ridiculous.

Since then Nordegren said she has experienced various emotions. Woods and Nordegren share custody of a 3-year-old daughter and a 1-year-old son.

The word betrayal isnt strong enough. I felt like my whole world had fallen apart, she said, before later adding, I have been through the stages of disbelief and shock, to anger and ultimately grief over the loss of the family I so badly wanted for my children.

Of the settlement she received, which neither she nor Woods have disclosed but People estimated to be worth $100 million, she said it wasnt worth splitting up her family.

Money cant buy me happiness, she said. Or put my family back together.

Praised for maintaining her privacy through the ordeal, Nordegren, who disclosed she suffered weight and hair loss from stress before the divorce, said she wanted to protect her children.

For my kids, I felt that maintaining privacy was the only normalcy I could give them, since they have a very famous dad, she said.

Nordegren said she has not watched one minute of golf since the revelations. She conducted the interview over four visits lasting a total of 19 hours at the rented Windermere, Fla., home where she now lives with their two children.

The magazine said Nordegren had approached the publication to tell her side of the story and a spokeswoman said no one had been paid for the article.

I felt like setting some things straight, Nordegren said in the article.

She and Woods tried for months and months to reconcile, she added, but without trust and love it wasnt possible. She will relocate to southern Florida so that her children can be close to their father.

Forgiveness takes time, she said.

Taxman bars Crocodile Dundee from leaving Australia

SYDNEY | Wed Aug 25, 2010 9:16am EDT

SYDNEY Reuters - Actor Paul Hogan, best known for playing an outback hunter in the Crocodile Dundee movies, has been stopped from leaving Australia until he pays a multi-million dollar tax bill, according to his lawyer.

The Australian Taxation Office ATO served U.S.-based Hogan with a departure prohibition order when he returned to Sydney last Friday for the funeral of his 101-year-old mother Florence, his lawyer Andrew Robinson said in a statement.

This prevents the 70-year-old actor from leaving Australia until any alleged tax debts are paid or arrangements made for the tax liability to be discharged.

He is stunned and very disappointed that the government could treat him as a flight risk, said Robinson.

He denies the liability asserted by the ATO and has filed objections which have not been the subject of any response from the ATO. He will continue to defend his position through all available legal and other channels.

Hogan is under investigation as part of a nationwide tax fraud probe over allegations that he put tens of millions of dollars in film royalties in offshore tax havens, a claim that he has denied, saying he had paid plenty of tax in Australia.

The tax office was reported to have served Hogan with an amended tax bill last month for tax on $37.6 million of undeclared income after a five-year long fight.

A spokesman from the ATO declined to comment.

As he is an individual taxpayer, we can make no comment, the spokesman told Reuters.

Hogan, who was once a painter on the Sydney Harbour Bridge, has repeatedly denied that he has not paid all his taxes.

A popular Australian TV comedian, he hit international fame as Mick Crocodile Dundee in the 1986 film Crocodile Dundee which went on to become Australias most successful film ever and won Hogan a Golden Globe for best actor.

Two sequels followed and Hogan married his Dundee co-star Linda Kozlowski which was his second marriage.

The process of detaining Paul in Australia away from his wife and child in Los Angeles has devastated Paul and he hopes that discussions between us and the ATO will lead to a prompt resolution allowing him to return to his family, and thereafter to travel to and from Australia as his personal and business needs require, his lawyer added.

Interview: Woods ex-wife went through hell omg

WINDERMERE, Fla. - Tiger Woods ex-wife Elin Nordegren said she has been through hell since her husbands infidelity surfaced but she never hit him, according to an interview released Wednesday.

Nordegren told People magazine she and Woods tried for months to reconcile the relationship. In the end, a marriage without trust and love wasnt good for anyone, she said.

On Thanksgiving night outside their Florida home, Woods drove his SUV over a fire hydrant and into a tree, setting off shocking revelations that sports biggest star had been cheating on his wife through multiple affairs. The couple officially divorced Monday.

Nordegren told People that she never hit Woods on the night of the car crash.

There was never any violence inside or outside our home, she said. The speculation that I would have used a golf club to hit him is just truly ridiculous.

Nordegren said Woods left the house that night and when he didnt return after a while, she got worried and went to look for him. She said thats when she found him in the car.

I did everything I could to get him out of the locked car, she said. To think anything else is absolutely wrong.

The magazine said the interview was conducted over four visits lasting a total of 19 hours at the rented Windermere, Fla., home where she now lives with their two children.

Ive been through hell, she said. Its hard to think you have this life, and then all of a sudden was it a lie? Youre struggling because it wasnt real. But I survived. It was hard, but it didnt kill me.

In an interview on NBCs Today show on Wednesday morning, People magazine reporter Sandra Sobieraj Westfall said Nordegren and her team approached the magazine.

Westfall said Nordegren wanted people to know three things: shes not violent and never hit Woods; she had no idea this was going on; and it was a real marriage for her.

Nordegren and Woods were married Oct. 5, 2004, in Barbados and have a 3-year-old daughter, Sam, and an 18-month-old son, Charlie.

In the interview, Nordegren would not disclose the amount of the divorce settlement but did say money cant buy happiness or put my family back together.

Im so embarrassed that I never suspected not a one. For the past 3 1/2 years, when all this was going on, I was home a lot more with pregnancies, then the children and my school.

Woods, who is playing in golf tournament in New Jersey this week, has not yet commented on the couples divorce.

Nordegren said she would eventually come to forgive Woods but that she is still working on it.

Forgiveness takes time, she said. It is the last step of the grieving process.

In the meantime, the Swedish-born Nordegren said she is excited to start the next chapter of her life and intends to stay in the U.S. with her children.

She also said shes not watched one minute of golf.

Faith Hill in concert in La. for Katrinas victims AP

NEW ORLEANS Country music star Faith Hill says giving back just comes naturally for the Mississippi native, and she has a message for those still recovering from Hurricane Katrina.

We are here for you still and you are not forgotten, Hill said before headlining a free concert Tuesday evening in New Orleans to support those still rebuilding five years later.

She said the evening at the Mahalia Jackson Theater was intended to celebrate how far the Gulf Coast has come since the 2005 storm flooded New Orleans and surrounding areas of Louisiana and Mississippi.

I feel like its my responsibility to give back, Hill said. When youve been given so much, its only right that I do what I can to help, if I can.

The Dirty Dozen Brass Band opened Tuesdays event and about 2,200 tickets were distributed in New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Lafayette and the Mississippi cities of Biloxi and Jackson.

Mona Rowe, of Perkinston, Miss., said she was glad to have the opportunity to see Hill perform.

She is just outstanding, Rowe said. She knows and understands what we went through and what were trying to do.

Hill took the stage after the Dirty Dozens set, opening with her hits Free and Wild One before bringing the New Orleans-based brass band back on stage to play backup on her song, There Will Come A Day.

The Dirty Dozen Brass Band must come back on stage, Hill told the audience, to rousing applause. You guys were simply amazing.

After singing This Kiss, one of her No. 1 hits, and Let Me Let Go, Hill told the crowd that she didnt know where the music might take her.

This city inspires great music and sometimes when I get together with my band I never know what will happen. We want you to just sit back and forget about it all and just have a great time. Can you do that? she asked, getting yells and applause in response.

Lola Russell, a paramedic from New Orleans, said she was one of the lucky first-responders to receive a free ticket to the event.

She said Hills performance helps to keep the recovery in the spotlight.

She brought all these people here, Russell said. Theyll probably get a room tonight, go out after the concert and pour even more money into our economy. That cant do anything but help the citys recovery.

Hills husband, country singer Tim McGraw, is a Louisiana native and both are veterans of employing celebrity clout to help raise money or awareness for causes.

The couple helped organize a flood-relief benefit concert for Nashville after the Tennessee city was deluged by historic rains that left 22 dead in early May.

Sometimes, with celebrity, you can make things happen pretty easily, said Hill, a five-time Grammy Award winner now working on a new release.

She urged people to support New Orleans and other coastal communities whose livelihoods are now threatened by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

My message is Come to New Orleans and experience this great city. Yes, there are places that are still rebuilding and are not quite back yet, but when they do come back, theyll come back better.

Entertainment biz fangful for vampires

Wed Aug 25, 2010 6:34am EDT

LOS ANGELES Hollywood Reporter - Hollywood has repeatedly peddled the apocalyptic threat from aliens, machines, comets, viruses and zombies, but who was watching the vampires?

Never exactly absent from the entertainment scene, those eternal bloodsuckers lately have infiltrated everything from big screens and little screens to bookstore shelves, clothing racks, download services, video games and video, record and jewelry stores.

The low-budget Fox/New Regency Twilight parody Vampires Suck has grossed $20 million in its first six days, and 5 million regular viewers are rabidly following HBOs newest hit, True Blood, as it swoops toward its season 3 finale September 12. Meanwhile, Justin Cronins The Passage, Stephenie Meyers Breaking Dawn and Charlaine Harris Dead and Gone hover on best-seller lists.

These charming, deadly immortals are everywhere. And as a result, theyre spilling as much green as red -- about $7 billion since the Twilight film franchise bowed less than two years ago, according to Hollywood Reporter estimates.

What started with some ancient, hysterical myths and a pair of spooky 19th century tales -- John Polidoris The Vampyre 1819 and Bram Stokers Dracula 1897 -- has bloomed into an entire inexhaustible industry.

By starting with one simple mythological creature thats been part of our literary universe for centuries, you can create a story that has it all: romance, horror, action, special effects, sex, epic love, wish fulfillment, romantic leading men, delicious bad-boy villains, female badasses, damsels in distress, death, monsters and, ultimately, the perfectly flawed hero who would give it all up if it meant they wouldnt have to spend eternity alone, says Julie Plec, writer and exec producer of the CW series The Vampire Diaries. It doesnt get more universal than that.

That gets to the bloody heart of it. Because theyre not specific to genre, vampires have the freedom to roam not just across mediums but from romance to horror to political commentary to humor. Their versatility is endless, swinging from chaste innocence to sexy violence, so the potential audience is everyone.

No other subject has sunk its teeth into pop culture quite so pervasively.

Lets start with the current king. Globally, the three Twilight films, released in 2008, 2009 and 2010, have a $1.76 billion haul at the global box office. The first two each grossed $160 million or so in home video sales the third hits Blu-ray/DVD in September. Thats more than $2 billion right there.

If the coming two installments of Breaking Dawn -- which Summit will release in November 2011 and November 2012 -- do similar business in theaters and the home-entertainment market, that would add another $1.7 billion to the coffers.

And thats just from the movie versions of Meyers colossally successful book series.

With Twilight riding herd, vampire movies have accounted for an average of 3% of total box office the past three years. So, for example, with New Moon, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans and Cirque du Freak: The Vampires Assistant totaling $356.7 million domestic in 2009, that amounted to 3.4% of the industrys $10.6 billion U.S. haul that year.

The other major flank of the current undead siege consists of Vampire Diaries and True Blood, HBOs most successful property since The Sopranos. Pinpointing the value of a monster television property is harder than driving a stake through the heart of a nasty beastie, but the longer a show is on the air at least up to seven seasons, the more money it is going to throw off in ancillaries.

Few TV shows make money upfront; almost all are in deficit until the aftermarket kicks in. Both shows have lots of life left in them and huge fan bases, so sources see buckets of cash eventually pouring into the coffers of the Diaries producers, Warner Bros. and CBS, which also happen to co-own the CW.

True Blood is harder to quantify because some of its value is in brand-building and bringing more subscribers to the premium cable service. Even so, estimates from two outside sources suggest that if the shows last five years on their respective outlets, domestic and foreign licensing arrangements could generate $100 million-$125 million from Vampire Diaries and $50 million-$75 million from Blood.

As for DVDs, nearly 1.3 million units of True Blood: The Complete First Season have been sold, and Season 2, which was released in May, has nearly reached a million. The first season of Vampire Diaries should do similar numbers after it hits stores next week. At an average of $40, that puts the estimated total for both series, plus catalog titles in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer vein, at $200 million for the home video market.

Vampires have super hearing, and their tastes might run to the baroque, but the music tie-ins bring in serious vampbucks, too. Sales of the first Twilight soundtrack total 2.6 million, with all scores and soundtracks related to the Meyer films nearing 5 million. Assuming $10 per unit, that adds another $50 million or so to the tab.

The book world, swarmed as it has been with vampires since Stoker popularized the myth, has gone bonkers with bloodsuckers since Meyer published Twilight in 2005. Her four Twilight novels, plus the Eclipse offshoot The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, have sold in the neighborhood of 100 million copies.

This puts her in a league with Ian Fleming and Roald Dahl. Its difficult to quantify precisely, but at this point, Meyer likely has passed sales of previous bloodsucker queen Anne Rice, whose 12 vampire titles began with Interview With the Vampire in 1976.

Credit where credit is due: Book industry estimates indicate that before Rice created her first tale of Lestat, about 1,000 vampire titles had been published. Since 1976, some 41,000 have hit the shelves. Call her Author Zero of this particular pop culture movement.

Harris, who writes the Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampire series of novels on which True Blood is based, has sold something like 8 million copies since she launched the series in 2001. Book 10 was published in May, and all of them have spent time on the best-seller list since the HBO series became its most popular young show.

Among the millions-selling vampire-themed series flying out of bookstores today are L.J. Smiths The Vampire Diaries she also has the Night World series; the House of Night series from P.C. and Kristin Cast; The Immortals series from Alyson Noel; and the Vampire Academy series from Richelle Mead. Hollywood heavyweight Guillermo del Toro and author Chuck Hogan are part way through publishing their book trilogy The Strain from HarperCollins.

This is just the tip of the fang; there are scores of vampire titles on the shelves at the moment, and more are coming.

Vampire books are just growing, said one agent who sold a vampire book this year. There is no one area in which its stagnating. It goes from fiction to young adult fiction to genre fiction -- they are king.

Selling, say, 120 million copies at an average of $13 a copy -- splitting the difference between paperback and hardcover -- puts the vampire-book total in the $1.6 billion range.

The merchandising spun off from the most popular of these properties is equally pervasive -- and lucrative. The retail juggernaut tied to vampires easily clears a half-billion dollars.

Steven Ekstract at License Global magazine estimates that Twilight alone has generated nearly $500 million in merchandise. HBO has its run of True Blood merch rolling out as well, with the Tru Blood drink in particular selling well. Naturally, Halloween also benefits from the vampire craze just as sales of round-rimmed glasses skyrocketed off Harry Potter, with some estimates for the sale of vampire drag and paraphernalia ranging as high as $100 million.

No, the porn industry has not let this little phenomenon go by without its stamp. True Blood is parodied by New Sensations Tru: A XXX Parody; Devils Film has its series of This Isnt Twilight: The XXX Parody for all three films; and Sex Line Sinema has its take on the CW show, The Vampire Sex Diaries -- They dont crave blood. They crave you. Precise numbers are hard to come by.

Vampire-related video games such as Castlevania and Legacy of Kain have sold millions of units. There are dozens on the market, and at $40 a pop, thats another $200 million or so.

The vampire deluge shows no sign of slowing -- at this point, the phenomenon seems as deathless as its main characters. Matt Reeves Let Me In and Screen Gems 3D graphic-novel adaptation Priest will hit theaters in the coming year to join the first of the two-part Breaking Dawn finale.

Among the high-profile film projects in development are the adaptation of Elizabeth Kostovas The Historian at Sony, the adaptation of Cronins The Passage at Fox 2000, Dracula Year Zero at Universal and the adaptation of Castlevania at Rogue Pictures. Amy Heckerling is putting together Vamps; the Underworld franchise plans a fourth installment in 3D; and a horror film called The Last Voyage of Demeter, inspired by Stokers original telling, is in the works.

And everyones looking for the next Twilight. For example, U.K.-based Dan Films Severence has put out an ad seeking completed feature-length vampire scripts for teen/young adult audiences. In other words, a film for the Twilight age group.

Apparently, the only thing more ravenous than a hungry vampire is his audience.

Newseum in DC retells Katrina story 5 years later AP

WASHINGTON Jarring headlines from the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina said it all: Catastrophic, Hitting Bottom, Help Us, Please.

Five years later, the Newseum on Friday will open a special, one-year exhibit, Covering Katrina, that explores and explains how journalists reported on the disaster and its aftermath.

The Newseum assembled the accounts and belongings of journalists, newspaper stories and artifacts from the Louisiana State Museum for what curators believe is the first major exhibit on news coverage of Katrina.

About 80 front pages from around the world show how the story unfolded as the storm bore down on Louisiana and Mississippi and what followed. At the time, newspapers and TV reporters were the only link between the people needing help and the government that could provide it.

It puts you right there in the middle of the storm, Newseum chief executive Charles Overby said of the exhibit. As you recall, the government was slow to respond, but the media wasnt.

The museum about news and the First Amendment also produced a film offering reflections from TV journalists as well as two newspapers that shared the 2006 Pulitzer Prize for public service for their Katrina coverage the New Orleans Times-Picayune and the Sun Herald of Biloxi and Gulfport, Miss.

The exhibit includes a Gulf Coast map from the Sun Herald newsroom with pins confirming the dead in Mississippi, an anti-looter sign from a New Orleans shop and a rusty ax used by a journalist to break into a colleagues home to rescue pets.

Theres even a kayak deployed by a photographer to navigate flooded New Orleans streets and two bicycles used by reporters to first discover the levees had been breached.

In that flash of a moment, they both realize that were doomed, Times-Picayune Editor Jim Amoss said in the Newseum film. The water has broken through the flood walls and that the oceans are rushing into this city.

Editor Stan Tiner at the Sun Herald explains on film that Katrina brought an urgent demand for information. He recalled people leaving a water line when the newspaper truck arrived to clamor for a paper.

One of the most righteous jobs we did was to deliver the paper, Tiner said.

Much of the exhibit focuses on how journalists at the two prize-winning papers overcame enormous challenges and risks to inform the public and hold government accountable.

Even when their families were in peril and their homes were being destroyed, they continued being journalists, said Susan Bennett, the Newseums exhibit chief.

The exhibit includes reflections from such familiar journalists as NBCs Brian Williams, Shepard Smith of FOX News and ABCs Robin Roberts, who went searching for her mother and family while reporting from Mississippis coast.

A longer, 30-minute film will play in the museums Documentary Theater with sounds from inside the Louisiana Superdome as the storm beat down and later, the crowds chanting, Help Help Help
